Get a few levels in contracting so you don't have to haul your own goods
Make sure your collateral is more than what the item is worth, but not too much that a person won't haul it.
Check faction items, they will usually have a healthy margin.
When placing buy orders for the first time, do 10% of the daily movement or less if your wallet doesn't permit it.
If you're considering investing, don't be afraid to ask any questions you want. As well don't invest what you aren't willing to lose.

You don't post an answer like that in a troll thread like this.

I guess I shouldn't also tell him that it's profitable to haul "Sisters Core Scanner Probe" from jita to amarr for almost 100K profit per unit and then haul "Praetor EV-900" back to jita for another 100K profit per unit?

Be nice all ya evil capitalist pig-dogs! The guy is new to Eve, at least let him get comfortable before you stick the knife in, don't you know anything yet? Armatures!
Tyrell, start here, "http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Market_resources".
Asking "what" to trade will never give you a good answer here. Asking how, or methods, tactics, etc sometimes gets better results.

I don't mind helping out new traders with what advice I can give. I often give out items that are good to trade just for the hell of it.

There are good and bad items? I just throw darts at a wall and hope for the best

If you're station trading that usually might work cause there's almost always some kind of margin on it unless it's a very heavy moving item such as plex, and even this has a margin during the day that lets a person flip it for fun and come out profiting.
When you're doing hauling from one station to another in a different region. You need to verify the prices before you actually haul it. As with any trading, you need to make sure the average isn't 0-10% above what the buy order is cause that is a general sign the item is only selling to buy orders. A good example from what I've seen is basic planetary commodities.
