While mining some rats showed up at the scene and my drones took care of them with no interference from me.
Then the idea: What if I could hire an NPC wingman? It would pretty much act like an overgrown drone wouldn't it?
A couple of ways to do this but here's one:
1. A whole new category of characters would be created along the lines of agents. Each new wingman/agent would have his/hers own ship equipped in its own unique way from frigates to battleships.
You would be able to access them the same way you access an agent...based on standing and station. With the one exception that you have to pay a "fee" for their services.
That fee would depend on the Wingman level (same as agent level) and/or their ship type/makeup. As a base the fee should be the insurance premium for said ship in the even it gets destroyed.
Each ship would have random armament composition so as to make each wing-man unique.
Scenario1: I want to go out mining, so I hire a wingman with a cruiser type ship. He basically patrols the area as I mine. If any hostiles attack me, be it rats or another player...he goes into action much like a drone.
Scenario 2: I'm hauling into low-sec. Wingman accompanies my little industrial and sure enough, I'm trapped at a gate camp. This wingman has a covert class ship and has been cloaked...he de-cloaks and the fun begins.
Questions:
1.Can he be blown up? Answer: yes.
2.Can he be podded? Answer: No. The mechanics of the game wont allow you to pod a wingman as he limps off in his pod back to his home station to start over again.
3.How long does he stay with me? Answer: I'm not sure how to answer this but it could be time based or until you dock at another station, or both.
Why all this?
Because EVE is a sandbox and sometimes you just dont want to play with other payers or rely on unreliable people.
This one feature would need a lot of thought and work to implement...but it's do-able, and will cater to the solo pilots of New Eden.

Which would be a lot of thought and work completely wasted. Remind me, What does the second M in MMO stand for again?

And I must play with others just because it's an MMO?
Then do away with all NPC activity such as missions since they don't involve real players.
What's with you people? You think that because it's an MMO you have no choice but to deal with other "real" players? I play with others if I want to, not because I have to.
For me, the one plus about MMO's is that you are competing with other real thinking people, not hard coded artificial responses like rats in a belt.

We shouldn't have drones... or guns. Real men warp around in pods.
Rat wingman would be another form of weapon system, nothing more, nothing less.
I never liked t2 transports when they got implemented. Would've preferred brick buffed transports with players forming convoys, along with blob rat escort support and players mixed in, making for rolling slugfest. But instead we got bubbles, covops, and a game moving towards cat and mouse instead of fighting, with one side defenseless by design.

My thoughts exactly.

Correct again.
