I'm not here to moan about it joining to the game or how it will work with the game. I'm sure CCP have thought that through.
Instead I urge CCP to look at itself and EvE and think why people are still playing it today.
-EvE has constantly and painstakingly been updated, keeping it fresh and up-to-date. -EvE is on the computer platform, which have always been the same (people dont just bring a new type of PC out)
For these simple points, dust, if it interacts too much with eve will kill eve.
-How's CCP going to keep dust fresh? MASSIVE patches?? for a console? even the best FPS's get old quickly. -What happens when the PS4 comes out? Everyone puts down the PS3, just like the PS2. And the PS3's been out for about 6-7 years now, for all purposes a new console will come along soon.
So now few people play dust, say 3 years down the line. What happens now CCP? |

Industry rumor is that the console is dying. Focus will be on the hand-held and streaming games. Nintendo's latest may be a last gasp. |

Considering that the DUST client will be free to download (sort of) and considering that CCP are pioneering developers, I imagine they'll keep Dust up to date with fresh, regular content and, when the time comes, develop a next gen client for the new age console - just like how they developed the new Eve client and ran it side by side with the Classic Client until the time came to phase it out.

Yeah i think with all this 3d development going on though, its only so long before a 3d console without glasses is produced and you have your PS4. but yeh i have heard that rumor :) |

CCP has actually stated that they have constructed DUST in such a way that nearly all patches and updates can be applied server-side. The console client will require very little maintenance.
Mind you, we are still far from release.

A very well worded post.
Consider this:
The PS platform acts as a conduit to Tranquility (which is what DUST runs on).
This fact makes it very easy for CCP to do frequent content updates for DUST.
It also makes it very easy to have a version for PS4 when it comes out, not to mention their hand held system.
This also vastly simplifies tweaking and controlling DUST's interaction with EVE. |

Since Dust will be hosted on playstation consoles and CCP will want it to continue along like Eve, if a new generation playstation such as a PS4 was released Dust would probably be ported over to it, similar to what Final Fantasy XI did with Xbox and Xbox360. |

I definitely understand that CCP would've thought that through and its a good point, but as current trends are going, the next console generation will be vastly different from the current one (they have announced that consoles are hard and expensive to develop) So, for definite the PS4 will be a big leap forward.
The point is, CCP, to port to the next console/keep up with 3d graphics will have to entirely re-write the game most likely. Potentially this could stop the game in its tracks, who knows? |

This. AFAIR CCP said they would provide support for both platforms when the PS4 is released. The dropping price for the PS3 on a PS4 release would be good for Dust, actually. |

Fair point, however one advantage console game developers have is they are notified well in advance what the specs on any new console will be. In this respect, developing for console is much, much easier. They know exactly what they have to work with in advance, as opposed to developing for PC where you have to consider a huge amount of variation in end user hardware in the development process.

One thing to also remember is it was stated that the reason for choosing PS3 was because is the the least amount of resistance per say - as in keeping control of their game. (they don't need to make a game where the host console company copying or per say stealing DUST per say, especially if DUST has a learning curve like EVE) I'm sure the cost factor and or the freedom they have in the agreement as far as what they can do was taken into consideration. The choice they made in PS3 seems good due to it give them control of their growth and be able to control their growth, which truly is one of the reasons why EVE has become what it is today.

Play station has always had backwards compatibility, they chose the PSN network because it'll allow them to change content and the game on the fly with MASSIVE patches as you said.
Nintendo's latest console will be interesting to see if Dust and / or eve will come to it. However, you should probably read about some of the stuff you're talking about before you start making eve is dying threads. :P

Dust may die but it has no chance of "killing" Eve.
I am thinking of buying it. Interesting concept, but if Dust fails, you've made no case for how it brings Eve down. Do you have any computer software or engineering background to make a case for this? Or business management? If so, lay out a case for how this happens.
(Not saying I know better, but I don't see your case well presented here)

As far as I can tell, you are only paying to play EVE, just as you always have.
Once you give CCP your money for your game time, they can use that money as they wish (just like every other game developer).
In short, you aren't paying for anyone else's game except your own.

When you pay your Eve sub, you pay CCP for access to Eve. It is then up to CCP what they spend your money on.
Why do people think that Dust is free, anyway? I figure you pay standard price for the game, and then the online MP is free with MT |

Disagree there are still plenty of people playing the same FPS's even with new ones out. Also the reason for faster turn over is due to the "churn out" mentality that COD does. Their business model is not constant updating. Rather
1. Release 2. First DLC 3. Second DLC 4. announce new COD 4. Third DLC 5. Hype next game 6. Release new game.
People might just stick around if the game is shepherded. And the gameplay is tailored to persistence rather than the instanced COD gameplay. So COD wants a high turn over mentality.
Mean while take other games that have been taken care of. TF2...constant (free) updates. Doesn't matter if it's on pc I own both so the argument of console == ADD PC == smart and stick around isnt true. If it were where do people that own multiple systems fall into? Some sort of gaming attention purgatory?
Really it's all speculation (Yes even me), and it doenst matter because the game is coming out regardless.

I'm not saying eve is dying, i'm just saying console-PC interactions havent worked well in the past (e.g ninja gaiden was it?) and in tradition eventually all consoles have gone 'out of date'
I would've thought for PC interaction, CCP would've used the microsoft 360 which already interacts with computers well, but i guess they're more restrictive.
Also, when this new generation of consoles comes out, there's every chance that the PS4 is a flop, like the gamecube, or the cell-shading techniques needed make it impossible to port it to the next console well.
They're my concerns, and i have looked into them. ofc there's counter arguments but based on the previous experiences i dont have much confidence.

DC Universe Online is already on ps3, and its patching the same way like on PC. I see no problems at all to patch this thing on ps3 as well. I'm playing EVE and I have a ps3 as well. I not a pc gamer, or console gamer, I'm just gamer. And I'm happy to know I'll be able to use my ps3 to join EVE universe.

Well, that's the fun and the fear of doing something that has never been done in quite this way before. Should be an interesting ride however it ends up.

Edited by: Vixxen Sparkledust on 19/06/2011 20:24:29 I'm pretty much a noob, and from what I've seen come out of E3 about Dust, I think the Dust-Eve relationship is a fabulous innovation. True it's a huge risk being across both pc/ps3 and two very different game styles, but its realtime integration concept is remarkable. I played plenty of playstation games in the past on the PS2 (Final Fantasy etc) before settling on PC gaming. After seeing the latest footage about Dust, I'm rather tempted to give it a go. :p Love that it's free to play - that may be the very aspect that brings a whole lot of platformers into the Eve universe. Only time will tell as to whether the Eve-Dust merge will be a success - personally, I hope it works out well.

Well..... If Dust fails it will drag Eve down along with it's failure. CCP has used the capital generated from Eve to help fund Dust and WOD. If/When Dust begins to failcascade CCP will funnel whatever resources they can into saving a lifeless corpse. Eve will become even more of a "back of the bus" product as CCP won't have the capital to continue developing it.
WOD complicates this even further. The capital generated from Eve is currently funding development of 2 products. That is why we aren't seeing fixes and updated content with any substance. Eve is the cash cow and will be tapped until the well is dry. No ifs. No ands. No buts.
