Let me tell you a short story.
First, I played trial years ago and then had to quit because of real life. I came back several months ago then had to stop again. Now I say I'm back for a real go.
I have some isk from last time and set up 5 pvp merlins. I hear Syndicate is a good region to go because of smaller gangs.
On friday I go to Syndicate. I expect to lose my ship, I expect to learn with my first real attempt of PvP. Early in my flight I use the directional scan to find 2x stealth bombers in a belt PVEing. I almost warp on one and catch it but for funky control-click targeting he cloaks before I can catch him. The other one tries to shoot me does very little damage and warps before I get to him. That is ok. I learned I have to be quicker with reaction and better with targeting.
Next I go to near systems looking for more. I see almost nothing, sometimes I see a tech 2 jaguar assault ship with the name "1v1" on direction scan then at a gate. I know I have no chance vs jaguar, but I am not super nervous because I think he is out solo for PvP match like me. I'll look for a more even fight this time.
NOW TO THE POINT.
A few systems later I am in a system with 3 people in it. Me in tech 1 merlin, a merlin on scans (who I am looking for to fight maybe) and "1v1" the jaguar on scan. I make a mistake in my travel and the jaguar warps on me near a gate out of gate activation range. That's ok, I learned to be more careful with my warping. I will go down fighting, though! We both activate warp scramblers on each other and I start shooting him. I take almost no damage for a while and I wonder what is going on?
Next I see five more people enter system. A warp scram sphere activates and five more people are on my overview now.
Sabre, Cynabal, Harbinger, Drake, Rook ships and the "1v1" Jaguar, all from alliance "HF". I am now sensor jammed by the rook and all the others have scramed me. I die quick now. I am in my pod now in the warp sphere and seconds go by and then I am jammed by the Rook (jammed pod lol) and scramed by the rest before the dps kills me.
I would not have cared if the Jaguar killed me. I would not have cared if I go through a gate and these 6 people are on the other side and they kill me before I try to escape. But why does this "1v1" Jaguar have to set a trap for his friends to kill a tech 1 merlin and pod? What does this gain other than a bad combat log kill for them that they sacrifice a willing pvper maybe never coming back to that space?
I will be clear. I am not quiting EVE. I am not quitting PvP, I will use my other merlins. I am not asking for revenge or some kind of video game honour. But I just don't understand this!

It's called killboard "whoring" and basically one guy nabs and pins you and all this pals get in on the kill - raising the whole corp/alliance kill stats. It's sharing basically.
Good for you for going out to find fights - and welcome back to EVE.

That Jaguar was very nice to let his friends join in on the f1;f8 killmail.

The whole "1v1" thing is a rouse. EVE is a dystopia and ALL PVPers are RPers when it comes to being dishonest and cunning.

Pretty much...people killmail w.hore. I think alot of people forget about challenging themselves and get sucked into the world of KB whoring. Keep doing what you're doing and you'll eventually succeed. It takes guts to solo.

Its also entirely possible that they thought you were the bait scout for a larger gang and having engaged you kept you alive long enough that you could call your friends in.
It being obvious your (non existant) friends weren't coming/didn't exist the hostiles got bored enough to end your misery, but not before as many KM *****s could gather got on the kill.
Most likley every bastard for 6 jumps was probbaly screaming into comms 'I'm on my way...don't you dare freakin kill him you *&^%$^% untill I get there'.

Was actually killing a CS lately, and the dude has two carriers jump in and rep his sorry (insert expletive). Gave him the GF, built another ship, and returned to the space lanes!

Boomer, Welcome back to eve. You want small scale/frigate PVP there are only two places that I know of: 1) Faction Warfare. Not half as broken as people make it out to be and it is possible to get 1v1 and small scale combat consistently. I have dones both Caldari vs Gallente and Amarr vs Minmatar.
2) RVB. Red Vs Blue. Two corps in constant wardec with each other. I have never been in RVB, but from what I hear they make painstaking efforts to make sure the corps stay balanced with each other and the FC's from both sides work together to make sure one fleet is not overkill against the other. Never heard a negative thing about RVB and I know that 1v1 are common and honored.
Aside from that, 1v1 are commonly honored in low sec (not so much in 0.0, for good reason). Just ask in local and see if you have any takers. If you are flying a T1 frigate and they can't lock your pod (no reason they should be able to in low sec), then you really don't have anything to lose if they show no e-honor.

Welcome to EVE, that's how most PVP engagements work these days. Never assume it will be 1v1 even if you make a deal to 1v1, always assume there will be more.

Sad to say but solo PvP is rare these days. Odds are they thought you were bait and wanted to see what backup you had, wouldn't be the first time someone running about solo had a cyno and a lot of friends in blackops waiting to jump in.
Props for giving it a go though. -------------------------------------------------- "There is no such thing as an effective segment of totality." - Bruce Lee |
