Yep, expect a lot more topics like this.
Some of us are on laptops, so upgrades are a new laptop or box.
In my case due to a desktop going boom. thus stuck with the laptop
It's not hard to do the monthly fee, but the new box. With the prices of gas, groceries, utilities and even rent going up. Not happening anytime soon. so I'll take my money elsewhere and enjoy what leisure time and funds I have there.
We are all the same we do not read the instructions when we get something new and complain when things go wrong. But running a household and such is alien to most who get Mom and Dad to pay.

Originally by: Daimon Kria I actually started playing this month, so had no idea. Just got my retriever yesterday, and I guess I will not be able to enjoy it. BRB, cancelling subscription and uninstalling eve.
I re-subscribed about a week ago, and I was aware of the new system requirements.
I mean... It isn't like I was just going to shell out some money for a game that was getting a major update in a matter of days without making sure I'd still be able to run it.
Not that I was genuinely concerned, mind you. I just built all-new machines for my wife and I about a month back. Spent roughly $500 on each of them - 4 GB RAM, nice new video card, bigger HDD, quad-core CPU... So I was fairly sure I'd still be able to play EVE after the patch.
But I just don't have enough money to go throwing it at things without doing a little research first.
Interesting, What video card(s) did you get? I'm interested because I usually spend half of that on the video cards, $250.

Eh? This is actually effecting people? My brother, who uses a laptop with an integrated graphics chip (IE: Not even a real 3D card) was still able to run CQ on SiSi... yet people with cards, outdated as they may be, can not?

I'm disabled, super-poor, and draw Social Security (USA)and pay for EVE with PLEX.
Even I could afford a new gForce card in February to get ready for this.

Not really, that's the beauty of desktops. If 1 part goes boom - replace it. Very few parts cost much alone. If you don't know how to find out which part died, have a look online, there are tons of resources that can help diagnose what happened.
Power supply shorted out, arced across the mb. Both 500g HDs dead, Vid cards toast, all of it toast.
So yes one part can be catastropic to a desktop.

Lol, you assume that people who can afford to upgrade their PCs every 3 years or so would be kids living at home?
Or perhaps we are people with real jobs and who are able to budget and afford the things we'd like to have and not be broke living paycheck to paycheck.
If playing PC games is not high enough on your list of priorities to budget for, then you shouldn't be so upset when you no longer can play them.
Just a thought

Originally by: Tshien Tze if CCP could have, ya know, let me know in advance. I would have blown up all my stuff this week. It really ****es me off. Patch notes within the last few hours, no mention of my impending doom with my ability to log on.
So your problem is that CCP didn't give you enough warning of what the patch brings? And you didn't have enough time to blow up all your crap before you were forced to stop playing?
Why does it matter? You can't play..

It's very easy to say we all need to upgrade etc, but ccp could at least make an effort to optimize. I play pretty much all modern games with a steady 40fps at least, 60fps if i drop AA (crysis2, COD, Duke Nukem etcetc).
Eve runs at a steady 60fps (vsync) with all maxed at 1080, yet CQ runs at barely 15-20... Surely that points to the code rather than the hardware...
I realize that performance isn't the issue with the OP, just wanted to point out the fact that ccps coding is amateur to all the "lol my mom bought me an i7" guys in here demanding that everyone should bug their moms for i7s.

Cannot argue with that but the original thread was for the lack of information on the update that is all and we will lose people due to lack of funds.

Meh, I was ****ed on the first post. Now it's degraded into a "why can't you afford a new PC?" thing. I can afford a new PC. I *MAY* upgrade my tower in a few weeks so I can play. BUT the point I'm attempting to make now to some of the people is it's a matter of priority. I've grown up a bit and do not need to have the coolest gear on the block. My laptop runs everything I need for work, personel stuff, video, most games I play and until today ran EVE with very few problems. Sure, the graphics weren't stellar, but I was able to do my thing. The same people would scream murder if CCP was to increase sub rates by $2.00 are telling me to just go and spend an extra $500...so I can play EVE? I don't think so.

Edited by: Anonymous Lemming on 21/06/2011 23:15:27 People remember theres different groups on each side of the debate. On one side you have Kids or children who don't know the value on a dollar and haven't been on a budget, and the people who do know that value, but are techies, PC builders, Hardcore PC gamers who understand that their hobby is an expensive one and made the choice to budget accordingly.
On the other side are, the people who are resistant to change; And there are the people on a budget where there isnt enough to go to their tech its allocated else where, maybe surviving, maybe sailing.
(Please forgive my run-on sentences, my 3rd grade teacher would cry.)
Point is, dont assume one side is a certain group, its mean.

Originally by: Tshien Tze Look it's not that I can't shell out the extra x amount of $ to get a new PC and play play, it's that I ain't gunna. For everything else I do on my laptop, it works perfectly. I understand that some of you convinced your parents that you needed a liquid cooled core to do your math homework for college so they spent the $1900 so you can have a monster PC with 4 graphics card wired up. But out here in there really-real world, I've got bills and it doesn't make sense to upgrade my gear at this point just to continue with internet space ships. I enjoy it, but I don't want to take my $15.00 a month thing and turn it into a $750 this year thing.
If you spend $1900 on a new PC and it doesn't last at least 5 years without needing upgrades you either bought a mac (for which I'll laugh at you) or you got ripped off. As people have said you can build a system that will EASILY run CQ and EVE at max settings for around $500. If you don't know what to get ASK someone you know who does. Everyone has someone who is the local computer guru, tell them you want a system to game with and tell them your budget. Bribe them with a few beers and they will probably even build it for you.
As for not knowing this was coming...Bull****. They announced they were dropping sm2 support years ago but held off to give people time to upgrade, then again they said it around the time the character creator came out, then in march they officially dropped support but said that some sm2 cards may still work. They mentioned then that later that would cease to be the case. If you failed to notice the dev blogs then you should have noticed the launcher message that was up for weeks, barring that exactly wtf do you expect them to do to get your attention, call you on the phone and say "hey dude we're totally dropping sm2 support, just wanted to let you know kthxbai"

Actually that was entire point of removing Shader Model 2.0. If you read the original devblog post, they stated that by supporting the older graphics cards, it was hard for the graphics team to keep up. The more systems you support (read as older systems) the harder it is to support all the old code.
Why do you think programmers like writing code for game consoles. They only have one system to support (if exclusive, like Halo is for X-box).
