Im interested in what everyones favorite sci fi film is and why.
Myself, Aliens is my favorite by far. I can recite it almost exactly ive seen it so much, ive owned the quadrilogy on 3 separate occasions, and read a good bit about its origins and history.
Now, saying that after having seen Prometheus, I was entertained, but was left with a feeling that Ridley Scott was hesitant to let some things be explained. My hope is that he will revisit the Alien series again with some new surprises. Well, that is my hope.
Aliens however, was directed by James Cameron and the difference in directors really shows. It had what people knew Alien for, the thriller/horror aspect, but also bought good action and imo the best practical special effects ever. I still remember being afraid as a kid of the Queen peeking her head in my bedroom door. And a tidbit for those who arent aware, Bill Paxton aka Pvt. Hudson has been killed by an Alien, the Predator and the Terminator.
All in all, Aliens is my fav and the series is great, and Id watch pretty much anything from Ridley Scott and James Cameron.
So what are you favs and why? Maybe if I havent watched it can get me interested in doing so. Your still a child in the eyes of the universe |

This is a hard call.
Serenity or Star Wars (Original Trilogy Theatrical Release).
Star wars was the first sci fi I really got into; but serenity (and firefly) are just so enjoyable to me.

I was blown away by Serenity when I first saw it. Then I heard it was from Firefly, and that the series actually led right into the movie. Im on the fence because as great as it is. now I know how it "ends" and my ocd prevents me from searching out the series from start.
But I know I need to because the movie was great. Your still a child in the eyes of the universe |

As for myself, I'm going to have go go with either Independence Day in all it's cheesy glory, or the first Matrix film. |

Event Horizon was really good and somewhat original. As for Prometheus, I speak from a standpoint of a totally biased Aliens fan, so I went in expecting a bit more in the way of explanation to the Alien origin. (not to spoil anything for those who havent seen it) Ill just say that it felt as if some things were hastily explained, and that gave me the feeling that while making or concepting the movie, Ridley felt that he missed his baby and wanted to come back to it at some point, so he was hesitant to get into further detail.
this is speculation and a bit of hope on my part. Still a good movie and I cant wait for the blue ray. Your still a child in the eyes of the universe |

True story: 1st time going to see ID4, sold out. 2nd time, full theater, crappy seat. 3rd time, had to **** at the intro, so wasnt comfy at all for the entire movie. 4th time...finally, a seat right in the middle with an empty bladder!
And im hard pressed to find a better first encounter than Will Smith giving an alien a right cross.

Since I rarely agree with reviewers on anything(example I liked Skyline), I didn't read anything about Prometheus. I didn't know it was a prequel or whatever until I saw it. The surprise probably upped the enjoyment level. In before lock. |

I agree, reviews arent really a good indicator as to how good a movie is. Best to see for yourself if the trailer even had you the slightest bit interested. Your still a child in the eyes of the universe |

Gearbox is making Aliens: Colonial Marines... they claim it's the sequel to Aliens
Here's the latest thing where they show it and talk about it *Squeals* "A genius throws a Molotov cocktail and soon realizes that he's going to die choking in a maze of smoke and flame. I cant state enough my hopes for this game. Im hearing comparisons to L4D which i think fits the Aliens universe perfectly. And there hasnt been a good Aliens game since AVP2 on the PC. I did like the Aliens rail gun game in the arcade and playstation tho

Here's my pick and why I think you should watch them!
Alien - amazing set design, terrifying, Sigourney Weaver is hot. Aliens was good too but it lacked the truly isolated feeling of the first film and was too much bravado/action in place of suspense and character development.
2001: A Space Odyssey - captivating art direction and photography, revolutionary for its time and still the darkest, most chilling portrayal of AI gone wrong I've seen yet. This is an absolute must-see.
Ghost in the Shell - Dystopic, convincing imagination of a world that has become completely inter-connected via a universal network. Bio mechanical cop heroine contemplates the 'ghost' (her soul) in the 'shell' (her artificial body). Strong theme of existentialism and some of the most gorgeous cityscapes of any science fiction premise - the opening sequence is particularly breathtaking.

This is a set of movies where you have the dilemma of which is better? The first because it was truly great and the start of the series, or the 2nd which IMO better in the sense that it did true justice to continuing a great movie.
And the fact that a director found a way to get a great performance from Arnold by playing to how he acts naturally is something not many realize. Your still a child in the eyes of the universe |

All great movies, im biased so Im totally not with your assessment of Aliens (lol). Ghost in the shell was great, the series even more so. It was kinda like watching an anime mix of CSI/X-Files if you get the meaning. Id put Akira higher simply because it was such an impressional movie on me and my art career

I quite liked David Lynch's Dune.
Yes it was nowhere near as good as the books, yes the whole "wierding module" **** didn't really work but it had a decent stab at representing the wheels-within-wheels factiony politicking that pervades the Dune novels.
It is also quite the worst piece of unashamedly gingerist propoganda I've ever seen. Every single last one of the Harkonnens is disturbingly ginger... this has to have been deliberate. If he'd shot the film using just black actors to represent the Harkonnens there would have been an uproar, but as it was ginger folk everyone was OK with that as it's not like we actually have souls.
Still, if you overlook (temporarily demoted to ginger) Sting's uberbad overacting, there were some reasonably believable performances in there and it was as epic in scale as I'd have expected having read the book. One original thought is worth a thousand mindless quotings - Diogenes. |
