Today's patch has left me not sure how I feel about Eve any more.
For reference, I've played since early 2005. I've been with Eve mostly continuously through that time. One or two breaks from the game, but never for more than a month.
Over the last year, we got several patches that were just outright broken. We've had bugs before. We've had giant-massive-boot.ini-bugs. But even a single patch that was just entirely non-functional has been a rarity since 07 or so. This year, there were quite a few all in a row. I started feeling a little uneasy.
A lil while back we found out WiS was not going to be optional. I was annoyed at the broken promise, but meh - that's the way it swings. I can F10 and stare at the map instead of the ship, and I'm okay with that.
A lil while after that, the scorpion-for-cash debacle hit. They reversed the decision, but the fact that it made it that far made me very uncomfortable.
A lil while later, we discovered that the third party sites that support the game, that give it the community it has, were going to be charged $99 a year to do what they already did. Even the ones not making RL money off their work. Again, the community outcry flamed the later half of that back out of existence, but that the idea even crossed a dev's mind - much less made it to a point that it's publicly announced as an intention - made me even more uncomfortable.
And now the vanity item prices. Given the rising ire on the forums, on the news sites, and in game, I'm reasonably sure this will get flamed back into something less offensive. And, as noted above, I have no intention of participating in WiS above the amount I'm forced to anyway. But that these prices were considered "good" by the company who controls the game I'm playing is, for the first time, causing me to consider leaving eve. Not taking a break, just taking off.
I've been through several game changes. Often I've agreed. Often I've disagreed. But I always felt like I "knew" the company behind these decisions.
I just can't understand what's changed so drastically to cause this rampant, unmitigated cash-grabbing and lower quality.
Feature abandonment I'm used to.
Bugs I've lived with.
But an outright, unmitigated, unveiled attempt to just milk cash as hard and fast out of me as possible, without regard for longevity or thought about consequence?
While I realize these threads are currently overwhelming the forums, I half wonder if there's something financial going on we don't know about. Some bad debt or poor investment choice that is biting CCP in the ass right now, that they have to monetize quickly to keep the lights on. That is the only reason I can think of that the company I've been with for so many years would change so drastically in such a short time frame.
Because if it's not something like that - I feel like CCP got taken over by a different company.
A company I don't like doing business with any more. Role Reform

Apparently someone ran a simulation and found they would earn more by grubbing every cent they could at the expense of player base as opposed to making a good game that would attract new players.

Edited by: Wrayeth on 22/06/2011 04:17:33 You know, the "Was CCP Purchased?" question is actually a very good one. I agree that CCP seems to be acting out of character. Moreover, they just initiated a relationship with (gag) Sony. Given SOE's track record, this seems like the kind of stunt they'd pull, and it kind of makes you think: does the relationship with Sony go deeper than just providing login support for DUST through the PSN? I wouldn't think that CCP would actually allow themselves to be purchased, but stranger things have happened.
God, I hope that's just paranoia talking. (...but just because you're paranoid doesn't mean everybody isn't out to get you.) -Wrayeth --> Insert Useless Signature Here <-- |

If CCP was going broke I would much rather they be honest and say, "We need your money or there will be no more eve, so we are raising the subscription a couple dollars."
I doubt that's what is actually going on however.

We do know about them, both of them.
Dust 514, World of Darkness.
We are the cash cow being prodded to prop up the development of these two other games.
I would love to just sit here and think, nahh cant be Im just being cynical. Then I login and realise that we have just had the first Eve expansion that offered ZERO real content for Internet Spaceships. The only content added, was a cash shop. All this time and that is all that has been presented.
Eye candy without substantial content is the realm of console games, but alas, Dust is a console game, and it has cross infected Eve along with it.

As clarification - this isn't a rage thread. If I did decide to go, I'd go calmly, wishing CCP the best. I've enjoyed the time I got from Eve.
This is more a quiet request of explanation - is there a reason we, as players, aren't aware of for so many monetization attempts in so few months suddenly, or is this the new direction for Eve now? Role Reform

Sadly not. At this point, CCP being purchased and the buyer axing the management to get competent people in place is about the last hope on the other hand. -- This was the time, CCP was still CCP, it was good. |

Excellent and thoughtful post. For the first time in my eight years of playing Eve, today I lost my connection to the game. As a capsuleer, I was one with my ship, to which I can no longer inspect the fine details as I control the spin of it in my station prior to undocking. What about my immersion?
For the first time I have considered allowing most of my accounts to expire. Something about Eve no longer feels right. I watched the CCP marketing machine in full operation during the Alliance Tournament and I am very concerned about the direction Eve is taking. I will let my cold hard cash do the talking and reduce the money I am spending on the game, not increase it.
I will keep my money in my own pocket, not CCP's. What is interesting to me, is the game used to present the players with a steep learning curve in order to connect with the game. Now it seems that CCP now faces a steep learning curve to connect again with the players. It is truly shocking what they have done.
Congratulations on a new low CCP.
All along the way, CCP has ignored the player base. We have continually stated that the in-space features are what we are interested in. So what do we get?

Correct.

The timeline you noticed is reality. One of the points in time where everything progressed towards going to **** is when CCPGames no longer was CCPGames.
edit: They also tried to sell EveOnline but the product wasn't attractive without microtransactions and avatars.

The CCP accouting team is the only bad influence on CCP right now. Money Money Money Money Money.
This is not the CCP we all have known for the last five years. And its been five years since the merger, it wouldn't have taken this long for something to show. _____________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008

It's been showing all along. The plan has been clear for a long while now.
All this was predicted by the people who left in mass-exodus 3 odd years ago.

Third party sites only have to pay for a licence if they take money for what they do.
Which is legitimate. Other people making money off CCP's gives them every right to charge them for that.
If your stuff is free, your licence is free.

Yep I totally agree with you, in fact I have been posting this on the forum since late 2009 and everyone dismiss this. EVE Online for ccp indeed is their cash cow, where they get all of their stable money from, where they take this money to develop other projects, while just barely put back the very minimum funds into eveonline's development to keep us barely satisfied. What happened right now is nothing more than CCP's miscalculation.

Basically it's CCP getting money for something they shouldn't be getting money from. No matter how you look at it, just another way in what's becoming a long list of items CCP is doing purely to make money. No other reason. If it was a 'legit legal reason' they'd have done it long ago. ------------------------------------------------ This http://www.xtranormal.com/watch/12238558/a-fictionalized-account-of-the-events-that-led-to-june-21st |

They lost faith in EveOnline. It became apparent that the core foundation of Eve was not designed in a way which would support the next generation of gaming. Came to a point where they discovered "if we want to be in business in 10 years then we need something with a future"
Since they don't believe Eve has a real future and will eventually be hamstrung by it's ageing game design foundation this future must be sought from other products.
