So, I've done a little research and found out that the GMA X3100 is capable of shader model 3, but the drivers on a macbook are not. I heard on another Mac forum that that partitioning the Hard Drive and bootcamping in Windows 7 will make the computer shader model 3 capable. Has anyone attempted this? I'd love it if it could be confirmed.

Anyone got conformation? I know there's talk about it working with the X1600.

If you use bootcamp and install windows, you then are on windows. Insofar as the GMA X3100 supports SM3 under windows, you'll be fine.
The drivers you'll get with bootcamp may or may not support SM3, but if they do not you can just download the ATI drivers for windows from ATI support site. --- I don't know! I don't know why I did it, I don't know why I enjoyed it, and I don't know why I'll do it again! Bart Simpson. |

I'm not sure if they've changed the graphics card. I got this machine back in the late end of '08, so i wouldn't know what the more recent capabilities/chipsets are.

Any Idea where I could get a copy of SP2 by the way?

Looks like I may have to get XP with SP3, that should work just as well as SP2 right?

Bootcamped Windows XP SP2. Using old iMac 2006 2GHz Intel Core Duo 2GB RAM with Radeon X1600. Runs very nicely although Captains Quarters framerate isn't good. I just turn off the station environment in the graphics setup. Also tried it through VMWare Fusion - EVE will work but overall framerate does suffer so best using Bootcamp.
I've just imaged the Bootcamp drive with Winclone and will try upgrading to SP3 to see how that goes. If it fails then I'll re-install the last image.
Hope the above info can help some one out.

Works on my old white macbook, X3100. I can run CQ in a playable fashion.
What I had to do:
Defrag the disk (yes I had to defrag a Mac to get bootcamp to work :D) Partition using Bootcamp Install Windows XP SP3 Install drivers from OSX disk
No other driver required.

So you used the mac drivers or you downloaded the newer ones from intel onto the OSX disk and then moved them?

I used the Drivers that are on the Snow Leopard OSX Disk, those are for Bootcamp integration with the OSX one, as well as allowing Windows to access the camera, bluetooth etc...
I actually Installed the graphics card drivers from Intel after that last post since I got BSoD. I have played about 3 hours after that without a hiccup.

Funny how much people love eve that they even want to endure bootcamp and windows to play it... :)
Another option, www.codeweavers.com. I've tried it somewhere last year and fullscreen was a bit dodgy, but video performance was ace.
Perhaps it has been improved. --

So, i'm getting ahold of a copy of windows xp from a friend tomorrow. (Is there a difference between the 32 and 64 bit versions that I should care about btw?) Anyways, just making sure I fully understand what needs to be done. Get bootcamp partitioned at a little over 20, install Windows XP with service pack 2, get the updated drivers, and then download/play eve.
So, a couple questions. (Some of these are for me, some are because i'm sure other people are reading this.)
1. Is it possable to download the new X3100 drivers from the intel site while on the mac part of the partition, or do you have to instal the XP part of the partition, then instal Internet Explorer, then download?
2. Anybody know if there's going to be a difference between Service Pack 2 and Service Pack 3? (I know it says 2 on the system requirements. Just wondering if there's a difference between the two. I believe Vista says it needs an extra half gig of ram.)
3. Anybody done this successfully with the X3100 card? Anything being missed?
4. (joke) anybody know if we're getting reimbursed for training Ship Spinning V?
Whoever answers these, thanks in advance for your patience.

If you can get the 64bit version, go for it. It will take advantage of your system's hardware and you'll get better performance.
It's a shame Mac doesn't update their drivers more often or the the chipset people like Intel, AMD/ NVidia don't do updates for us like they do for Windoze. :(

@ JohannThor thePeon What did you use to defrag your HD?

Before you get the 64 bit version you might want to check compatibility for your Mac at this site. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1846 I have the late 2006 Imac 2.16 GHz with ATI Radeon X1600 256MB card and have to use the 32 bit XP or Vista.

MSDN, retail stores or you update your own install media with a sp2 slipstream installation, though if you are doing this than I suggest you slipstream your install media to the most recent sp and not sp2. Why a forum in the year 2011 still has no automatic double post merge which can be done even with javascript mostly is beyond my understanding. |

First I cleared some space on my mac with help from this => http://www.derlien.com/ Then i defragged using this => http://www.coriolis-systems.com/iDefrag.php Then i partitioned using Boot Camp Assistant Then i Installed Windows XP professional SP3 Then i Installed the Bootcamp drivers into Windows from my OSX install disk Then i went here => http://downloadcenter.intel.com/ and found my driver by selecting: Graphics > Laptop graphics controllers > Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset Family > Windows XP Professional > Drivers > pick latest *.zip or *.exe
