I know this is trite compared to all the other issues Incarna brought to us, but I flew out just to test the new turret and gfx for the strip miner beams and was greeted with a tiny blue stream, and the regular miner turret 3 second sound file...followed by 177 seconds of silence.
When a strip miner started mining, casual miners in the vicinity *knew* it, the huge beam, the big "damage" cone pummeling the asteroid and the constant energy hum of the stream....all gone.
I remember when I was in my frigate, using 1 T1 miner...and saw the impressive barges, cutting a ISK making path through the belts...I had beam envy. How are we supposed to impress younger miners with these tiny, silent things?

I'm going to have to disagree with you there. For one thing, they look terriffic. Moreover, the constant drone of those beams used to do my head in. Now I can be doing something else while I mine and just open the EVE window when the beams cycle. Huge improvement.

Your opinion is fine, but everything you like can be obtained by simply turning your sound down. I enjoy the sfx of EvE, what little there is...I don't want *less* of it.

I actually agree to an extent. The beam is pretty cool visually in my own opinion, but the sound is completely ******ed. It's like somebody took all this time to make this powerful beam of destruction, and it ended up sounding like a damn bb gun. I guess we didn't have the extra 30 seconds to generate a new sound. I'm tired of this type of stuff being typical for CCP. They try and create things that immerse people in the universe, but then cut corners with duct tape and it's all ruined. Oh, and where is my #%&@ing loot log exporting feature???

I also noticed the crumbling asteroid sounds are gone when you zoom in on it while mining....

+1, I used to nod off to sleep to the sound of strip miners and wake up in the morning to find myself in structure as the last of my drones died defending me..
Now I have to put up with silence newish pvp pilot looking for a corp! (9m SP) |

I think the CONCEPT behind the new beams is absolutely fantastic - mining beams cutting the ore while a tractor beam reels it in. The only way to make that more awesome is if you could actually see chunks of ore flying through space towards your turret.
However I absolutely agree that it is in no way IMPRESSIVE. A normal mining laser now has the exact same effect as a strip miner, the strip miner beam is just a little larger. I don't get a "strip mining" feel from it at all. The last effect definitely gave me that feeling; that I was mercilessly CRUSHING that asteroid's surface beneath my mighty throbbing beam of phallic power - you could see the massive effect from 10 galaxies away while the lil mining laser beams (literally) faded into insignificance beneath the majesty of my ISK farming presence. Now I feel like I am coyishly tickling my asteroids with a space-feather. Possibly chipping away like a paranoid architecht with one of those comically undersized hammers. Ping, ping, ping ...

I miss the power of the Strip sound. Oh, anyone comment on the totaly LAME Icons for the active laser on the target and the LAME icon for your Strip Miner? Blurry chunks of something that could be poop for all we know. At least the old icons I could see and note they were active without having to move my screen view around to make them out from the background. Miners have been slighted in this patch. I will post some place else where half the guns are missing on half my ships too... :(

I have to agree with Deise, the new beams are so whimpy. There was a certain satisfaction in hearing and seeing asteriods being devoured by large yellow beams. Now I feel as if I am poking them with a blue straw. I do like the colour but thats about it. I also miss the sounds, of both the beam and the asteriod crumbling. Also you Designers of the new turrets must be the butt of all the office jokes at the moment. Months of detailed pain staking work on the turrets that looked amazing full scale but looks like a dog turd when sized to miniture.

idk what the **** the problem is - CCP are nerfing emselfes - why the **** would they kill the foundation of mining? yearh isks are great but.. it was the tranquillity of it that made the difference.. with this silent blue humming ****tē mining beam we got now theres nothing for the average miner to do but mine for the isks.. but seriously, why would a person do that in a universe that keeps on sucking moar and moar as patches are deployed?
Give us back out mining lasers

Mining these days is newbies or bots job. others run exploration/missions/wormholes. CCP should get rid of bots and make mining more profitable. OR mining could use one more mining barge that's better than hulk both in cargo hold and mining capabilities. Right now mining in empire space I could earn around 10 kk per hour. While doing missions I get 70-100 kk per hour. I do like the idea of mining, and I like mining itself as activity. The only thing that keeps me away from it is low income.

The beginning of a cycle will not be heard if the sound is down. He is saying the sound works like an alarm rather than a sleep inducer.
Personally, I have only seen the color as I haven't played with sound on (much) in the last umteen years. I like the sounds, but they interfere with voice comms.
