Gonna install a new graphics card and another gig of ram (for 1.99 gigs total) to my desktop until I can afford a shiny new laptop.
For the GC I was thinking a EVGA 512-P3-1311-KR GeForce 210 512MB 32-bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready Video Card
And for the RAM I am looking at a Kingston 1GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Desktop Memory Model KVR1333D3/1GR
I just wanted to check with the more technically savvy members of the community that I will be able to play with that. I don't expect to run CQ, but right now I can't even log cause my graphic card doesn't support SM3. -- "Far be it from me to stand in judgment. I prefer to sit." -Stephen Colbert |

What exactly are the specs of your current computer? What operating system do you use?
If you only have 1GB RAM and no dx9 vid card i storngly suspect you have an older system which doesnt support DDR3 in the first place. The GT210 is a video card which is quite a bit slower than mid to high end cards from 5 years ago too by the way, so avoid it like the plague.
If you want a cheap pcie card to get you through to your next full system, i'd strongly suggest finding a cheap second hand 8800GT or 9800GT if in any way possible. Given your current system (what i can guess about it anyway), those $50 cards (at most) will do just fine untill you get a new PC.

Something like this: 8800GTS http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=320-P2-N811-RX-CO-R&cat=VCD

Currently I have a nearly 5 year old 32 bit Vista from emachines. (I was 13 when I bought it, didnt know crap about computers... Still don't know much about hardware)
Oddly enough, the proccessor is fine. Current graphics card is Intel(R) 82945G Express Chipset Family. -- "Far be it from me to stand in judgment. I prefer to sit." -Stephen Colbert |

intel 945G chipset: http://www.intel.com/products/desktop/chipsets/945g/945g-overview.htm Your video hardare: http://www.intel.com/products/chipsets/gma950/index.htm
You got Pixel Shader 2 and Vertex Shader 3.
If you can play the game, then don't waste your money on new card. Save some more money and buy brand new computer.
One more thing. Your chipset does not support DDR3 so you can forget about it.

So basically I'm screwed until I get a new laptop? :( I can't even get to the login screen. Ugh, oh well. -- "Far be it from me to stand in judgment. I prefer to sit." -Stephen Colbert |

You have a decent computer and I got sort of sidetracked. You need a better video card, like you said earlier. You can get a kick ass older card like GeForce 8800/9800 anywhere from 60 to 100 dollars, but I will bet you have something like 350-400 watt power supply so you will also need 500-550 watt power supply to run the video card.
My advice is to get a cheap video card from 8xxx/9xxx series. Here is review of 210, it got beat by everybody: http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Inno3D/GeForce_210/30.html

Edited by: Kyo Haku on 25/06/2011 16:48:33 Ok, so which of these would work best with this motherboard/CPU?
Assume 2-3 gigs of RAM.
I think either of the last two would work, I have a 32 bit OS, not sure if that's relevant but they both say memory interface: 32 bit... -- "Far be it from me to stand in judgment. I prefer to sit." -Stephen Colbert |

Forget about that mobo+cpu. The cpu is an Atom, the whole thing is some kind of multimedia pc to watch movies and browse internet on the TV. That is not what you want. Furthermore, it says it has some kind of mini PCI Express slot, I am not sure what will fit in there.
Like I said earlier, you computer is fine. I have Core 2 Quad Q6600, 2 GB of RAM, GeForce 8400 with 128 MB of RAM for video, Windows Xp.
From the list of video cards, the first one, the one from Gigabyte is bad choice because it only has 128 MB of RAM. I have a card like that, 8400 chip, 128 MB of RAM, I got off eBay for 15 dollars so no point paying 30 dollars for card and another 6 dollars for shipping.
Like I said before, forget about 210. Since 9400 card beat it, I bet 8400 card will beat it too.
To suggest a video card for you, at this point we need to know the power rating of your power supply. Because you have eMachine and use onboard gpu, I will guess you have something in 300-400 watt power supply. That is not enough to run a gamer card like 8800/9800, GTS 250 and up. However, it should be enough to run 8400/9400, 9500, 9600.
Here is refurbished Asus card similar to the ones from Zotac and EVGA on your list, 8400 chip, 512 MB of RAM, but it is only 27 dollars instead of 33+ dollars that you were looking at: http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=EN8400GS-PCIE-512-CO-R&cat=VCD
For a little more you can get this 9400GT, but it says it needs a computer with 350 watt power supply so you need to look what kind of power supply have you got: http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=512-P3-N947-RX-CO-R&cat=VCD
