Edited by: Jada Maroo on 22/06/2011 22:59:35 PC Gamer - Eve Online now selling $70 monocles
Quote: If youÆve followed that, youÆll have realised that in real money terms the clothes cost around $17.50 each and the implant costs more than $70.00 (or four months subscription). An astonishing amount for an item with no in game functionality. For comparison, BethesdaÆs often mocked Horse Armour DLC cost $2.50 on release, some 28 times less.
Kotaku - Eve Online is selling horse armour in space
Quote: While none of this stuff is compulsory in any way, and is targeted at EVE tragics who have more money than sense, youÆd think CCP would have been a little more subtle about fleecing the devoted.

Whenever there has been talk about gaming and MMOs, I've often mentioned I play EVE to friends and such - maybe get them involved. I will keep this to myself for a while now.
"Oh lol, you play the 70$ monocle game?! Hah!"

pretty sure it was the same way when tf2 released the mannconomy, and they're hardly hurting for players.
everyone just loves to jump on the 'we hate microtransactions' bandwagon whenever it shows up, a day later they're buying hats for their dude.

I discourage them from even trying the game now. People don't take kindly to the possibility of some amateurishly designed piece of software taxing your hardware to death. _ _________ _ "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view - until you climb into his skin and walk around in it." |

i personally have no problem with microtransactions. i bought the horse armor in oblivion and i was happy to do it
what i have a problem with is "micro"transactions that cost more than the game that i'm playing does. $20 for a pretend t shirt is ******ed. $70 for a pretend monocle is just insane
or even if you're getting it with isk, who would rather have a monocle than a carrier or bhaalgorn? this crap is 10x as much as any sane person would pay for it

It would appear that a single monocle has done more damage in less time to CCP than a DDoS by a group of hackers.

Microtransactions and in-game advertising are the unfortunate future for mmo's. I don't think in-game advertising would be accepted at all in Eve. I think microtransactions would have been more well received if CCP dealt with the existing game problems first and didn't start out with silly high prices. They messed it up this time. Players have overlooked a lot of problems out of love of the game and what it represents. I think a lot of that goodwill has been squandered with the blatant cash grab. This is unfortunate.

Maybe that's the monocle's true power. What other power might it secretly have!

I'm not sure the $2.50 Oblivion horse armour is a fair comparison. A better one would be the $25 dollar mounts Blizzad sold to their playerbase. And people have bought codes for Trading Card Game reward mounts on EBay for hundreds of dollars.
Personally I'm a bit bemused by the whole fuss here. Any of the in-game cosmetic items can be purchased using in-game currency. And the rarer items wouldn't have any prestige attached to them if any level 4 mission grinder could buy them. Even in-game advantages aren't a new thing. Power of Two promotion anyone? Scouting alts, hauler alts, repping alts, probing alts, supercap alts. All ways to turn $ into in-game benefits that can't be earned through normal gameplay.
The only point I'd agree with is that by spending all this time on designing vanity items available to a small wealthy subsection of Eve, the regular subscriber is being ignored. The guys designing the Ishukone Scorpion could have been updating the uglier standard models instead. The guys who built the NEX UI could have been fixing the corp or LP store UI instead. And so on.

SO ... these are the "micro" purchases?
Hopefully there will be a re-think on the prices very soon - like on server reset.

All the joking aside, there are things I would like to purchase in the store, since I do enjoy a little vanity every so often... but, I'm not sure if the ISK spent would be easily justifiable. I would love to have a monocle though, hmm. And if you're reading this, you've fallen into a signature trap. You owe me 1m ISK. |

Did you skip maths in school?
Things in TF2 don't cost 68...
It's called 'Micro-transactions' not 'Macro-transactions'. Also no place for this BS in Pay to Play games. And if CCP thinks this is the case, and actually makes it happen, can you IMAGINE what this will do to monthly fee games? It's going to RUIN games. ------------------------------------------------ This http://www.xtranormal.com/watch/12238558/a-fictionalized-account-of-the-events-that-led-to-june-21st |

The "in-game advertising" angle is, I suspect, what the whole deal is with forcing people into the CQ (they've said the option to turn it off is temporary). That big TV screen in there that is constantly showing info on the game will probably get about 3months run time before we see the first 5second spot for NVidia or, worse yet, World of Darkness.

These guys are all bought and paid for with Adverts. It just tells me CCP haven't advertised with them.
Back when Evony first came on the scene, they had cash stores that would make you puke but they also had an Advertisement campaign that ran deep and nobody said **** about thier over priced very disposeable items store.
When EVE C-Store sells 15 minute SP speed ups for $5.00 they will be on Evony level. When CCO throw the Advert money around Evony did, we won't hear about it. |

Hehe! look at the LulzSec's banner image!
BBC Technology: - LulzSec opens hack request line
It is a man with a monocle! One of the Devs is a LulzSec inside man, tasked with bring down EVE from within! I wonder if he will empty CCP's corporate Bank account before he leaves, for the final true revenge

Actually, that's more on the dot than anything. Oblivion is a single-player game. Incarna will be a single-player experience for a fairly long time to come. To be fair, we have portraits, but a large selection on that market can't be shown on there anyway.
It's lame money-grabbing, ignoring any useful concepts on microtransactions along the way. Customers need to be eased (some say suckered) into the whole idea. Now it's just going to end up to be made for douchebags, by douchebags.
