There is a thread floating around concerning a Mining Carrier. This IMHO is kinda silly -- a carrier is a carrier. But the idea I'm proposing is similar, at least on the surface.
T3 Mining Ship!
The basic premise is that this ship, utilizing maybe three subsystem slots, would provide configurations that combine aspects of the Orca, Rorqual, Hulk and Mackinaw in an extremely expensive, flashy package, similar to how Strategic Cruisers combine aspects of Cruisers, HACs and Recons depending on configuration. There wouldn't be 4 racially-different types -- this is an ORE ship through-and-through, utilizing the latest in T3 technology.
Subsystems would include:
-- Mining Laser Efficiency Maximizer Doohicky -- Provides a big boost to Mining Laser yields but with reduced cargo capacity. Alternatively, it will allow it to use more Strip Miners instead of just increasing the yield. -- Mining Foreman Subprocessors -- Gives it big bonus to Mining Foreman links, like the Orca/Rorq. -- Cargo Capacity Augmentation -- Greatly expanded cargohold (Itty 5 levels). -- Covert Reconfiguration -- Allows it to use Covert Ops cloaking devices (and the ability to warp while cloaked) while reducing its mining efficiency and cargo capacity. -- Interdiction Nullifier -- Similar to the above it duplicates the Strategic Cruiser subsystem's ability to nullify interdiction spheres, again at the cost of reduced mining efficiency and cargo capacity. -- Enhanced Shield Power Core -- Increased shield strength. -- Drone Control Augmentation -- Gives it a greatly expanded drone bay, along the lines of the Ishtar perhaps, giving it much needed ability to defend itself from dangerous nullsec rats, but again at the cost of reduced mining/cargo. -- Ore Refining Facilities -- Gives it the ability to refine minerals inside its own cargo bay. This one I am iffy about. -- Mineral Compression Bays -- The ability to compress and store minerals. -- Scan Probe Control Systems -- Extra slot and bonuses for scan probe strength. -- Ice Mining Configuration -- Converts it into an ice mining specialist.
Again the point is to offer a configurable mining ship that can be tailored to meet individual players' wants and needs. Nullsec players will probably prefer fitting Interdiction Sphere nullifiers, covert recongfig and expanded drone bays (to defend against rat spawns); highsec miners will probably prefer mining yield efficiency if they have haulers handy, or cargo capacity buffs if they're mining solo. Many would enjoy having scan probe bonuses to make it easier to scan down hidden belts without having to hop back and forth between probe ships, and those who specialize in mining ice would enjoy that option.
There are some possible, however quite unlikely negatives to this ship type. The most obvious is making Hulks and Mackinaws redundant but I don't believe this to be the case -- no more than T3 Cruisers have made other cruiser hulls devoid of usefulness, whether in PVP or PVE. Another issue many might complain about is a bubble-immune, cloaky Hulk flying around practically immune to ganks -- but to this I'd point out the necessity of balancing it so that a player who does fly one of these ships so configured would be mining with much less efficiency than a player who configures his for maximum mining yield, so he is paying in the long run for his protection.
Size-wise I imagine these would be akin to battleship at least -- smaller, but certainly more advanced, than an Orca. And it would be able to travel through stargates. And probably cost well over a billion ISK. A big investment, but with big returns.
So, any thoughts or suggestions?
