In going for the 'hobbyist gamer' (casual gamers, even though eve isn't that casual gamer friendly), you seem to have forgotten a large part of your player base. The part that has shaped Eve over the years: the hardcore gamers. We don't come here as a hobby to experience an ultimate sci-fi simulator. We pay a subscription for an all-access pass to this crazy dystopian universe, where what you do, what you become and what you achieve comes down only to your skills, dedication and your effort. And because of that, our actions are meaningful. By extending the virtual goods sales beyond vanity items you directly attack one of the things that seperates Eve from all the other MMOs out there: that actions are meaningful. If I can just buy faction standing, what meaning is there in doing missions for faction standings? What meaning is there in finally achieving 6.0 standing (for POSs) or 9.0 standing (for COSMOS missions)? And from what I read, that's not even the end of it! Some people might enjoy spending more money 'on their hobby' like it was golf (an analogy that is inherently flawed, which I'll explain below), but due to the dystopian, merciless nature of Eve you've bred a community that exists for a large part out of hardcore players. People who see Eve as a serious business proving ground - not as a lighthearted diversion. These are the people who have allowed you to get to where you are today. These are the people who stuck by you over the past 8 years - even if they do call themselves "bittervets". To turn your back on those people is at best poor form, and at worst commercial suicide. Because Star Wars Galaxies has shown you can't just trade in one group of customers for another. Why golf is not the same as eve Specifically, buying golfclubs isn't the same as buying items in Eve. The equivalent would be if you could pay $100 to get one swing/strike/whatever it's called removed from your record. Instead of making a hole in 5, you could pay $400 and get it listed as a hole in one! Suddenly, your golf stats won't depend on how good you are, but simply on how much money you're willing to spend. Try to suggest that to golfers and see how they like it. In Eve, just flying a spaceship isn't all there is to the gameplay. The effort to GET that spaceship is part of the game. The fact that it isn't easy to obtain certain things, achieve certain things or do certain things is exactly what makes these things meaningful. Meaningful to me AND to others, who can see what I have achieved. And now some game designer would like to take that away? Bad move CCP. Truly a fantastic post. That one touches my soul. It quite shows the feelings i have about the viewed situation.

Going in that direction destroys Eve and makes CCP the proud owner of a glorified version of Farmville. Be happy with your 14.95/month +GTC for play time and stop trying to get bigger than you need to be. Great side publicity like Eve TV and Fanfest can be done in a smaller scale, and I'm sure you can get by without that shiny new flat screen in the break room. Microtransactions are not something you're going to be able to expand on with the PC player base. Stick it to the kids playing Dust that want a nice paint job on thier rifle. Any transaction that gets one player ahead of another decimates the fun we have as we earn our own or our corporation's place. Vanity is the line. I always aspired for a job at CCP, but after reading that is seems CCP got sick somewhere in the growth-phase, maybe an uncurable sickness unless some very drastic changes are made within CCP's management, be it policy, procedures or human resources... Good morale isn't worth much if everything else is bad, it seems that communication is a very big (ignored) problem within CCP on many levels and tiers. This bad internal communication then results in bad communication with the playerbase. I've seen many examples where devs seem to know very little about some problem/issue/topic when trying to answer the playerbase when it starts creating threadnaughts. Pull your pants up CCP and start improving internally and reaching a more professional level. In those reviews a "relaxed corp" is often mentioned, but there is a point where "relaxed" just doesn't cut it. I'm sorry, you are no longer 3 people in an attic any more. You have what, 600 employees now? Heck I can even point to some paralells in EVE. Corps that promote a "relaxed" atmosphere and grow too large start to wither quickly down again, because all it becomes is a collection of smaller cliqs. Which is just what those ex-employees are describing. Is CCP a company that says/promises/announces one thing they know the playerbase will like to hear and then go ahead and pretty much fail by doing completely the opposite? I bet its surprising to you higher ups at CCP how quickly and how many people have written detailed posts with opinions and strong feelings. As a company that makes MMOs, the most stupid thing you could ever do is to neglect the playerbase. History provides a clue. Star Wars Galaxies NGE. Is the advent of EVE's "NGE"? If your budgets are spread thin because of a simultaneous development of two extra titles on top of EVE, delay those titles if you need and focus on your current moneymaker; EVE. Do your absolute best to polish it until people (almost) stop complaining on the forums.
