So very true.
My contract with CCP was very simple. Had nothing to do with a non-binding EULA.
I pay them. They keep game running forever.
It really was that simple. They broke their end of the contract when they decided to massively expand beyond their capabilities and beyond the service I pay for the maintaining of.

Edited by: Sahvi Morvaalis on 24/06/2011 08:36:37 Another thing I forgot, which was the purpose of my TL;DR post...
I don't think I need to tell you that your game literally depends on the players in order to exist. I understand that game development is a business (firsthand, in fact), but it is part of the entertainment industry also.
I hope, for your sake, that the Dev Blog tomorrow appeases the masses and genuinely addresses the one major concern everyone here shares, and that is the purchase of in-game non-vanity items for AUR... and when they do broach the subject to answer the question, I certainly do hope the answer is "No. And we are sorry.".
Look at it this way... it will be the shortest Dev Blog you've ever had to film... cause that's all it needs to say. :)

For me, personally, there have been two deal-breakers in the last couple weeks, one of which has been building in intensity for at least a year, the leak just confirmed stuff. In a nutshell this is directly impacting my trust in CCP, and the direction that it's taking Eve. The lack of honest communication on these key business issues has left many feeling insulted.
1. The Developer Licencing. This is a slippery slope: not only a slap in the face to folks that have supported you, but show's a sinister side to the plotting going on over in CCP. ref: http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1534389&page=1#27 btw, as Antihrist mentioned later, in-game ISK is legally CCP property anyway, good luck trying to see that as player-income. It not only treads on questionable ground, but makes me think that a tiered pay-to-access API for users will be coming soon. Why is stuff like this kept "hidden" from us users? If this stuff was discussed earlier, then much drama could be avoided.
2. Mega-Transactions. The price of items was odd to say the least, but that is not my real concern on MT. Because of other lies, shenanigans, cover-ups and misdirection in some dev posts, my ability to trust CCP not to start implementing game-advantage MT was already dwindling prior to the leaked document ever appearing. So, don't blame the document or leaker too much: questions were already being asked and "hedging of bets" answers from CCP (like "evolve" wording in the denial/placations were not exactly confidence-inspiring). A definitive, unequivocal statement of direction is needed from CCP on this. I wish to make an informed decision as to whether I stay or not. I do not appreciate being half-truthed, conned, or brazenly lied to in order to keep my sub a little while longer. Honesty. NOW. Or my wallet walks anyway.
Unless those concerns get addressed honestly and quickly then my own trust in CCP as a company will be gone completely and forever, it's already wearing VERY thin. If I don't like the direction that is revealed, fine I can make an informed choice as to whether to keep investing time and money into my alter-egos in Eve, or whether the future game landscape won't be to my taste. If CCP succeeds in destroying my trust completely, then the direction in which the game is heading becomes irrelevant.
Additional gripes about my own pet peeves include the non-optional CQ: what's wrong with docking, loading old hangar (or new replacement hangar view, whatever), then choosing to decant from pod on my own terms to the CQ? (Optional CQ is not a deal-breaker for me, but it is for others due to performance reasons). Feel free to view my full post history btw., there's a few more pet peeves to consider if u wanna review them.

There's about 70 pages of decent posts and good old fashioned rage about the future of eve at this point, and I don't really feel i can add to that. I do support the demand that you guys at CCP need to answer whether microtransactions are going to be vanity only or not. If they are, as you've said for a long time, you guys need to develop a plan internally to stick to that and make sure that all actions regarding future offerings in the noble exchange stick to that. Every time you cross this line again, you lose more of your playerbase permanently from mistrust, and you lose thousands of potential subscribers from bad word-of-mouth.
If, on the other hand, game-altering microtransactions are coming, it's been very nice playing your spaceship game and i wish you all the best, but i won't be bothering to play it any longer.
as an aside, there is an important note I have to point out here regarding PLEX - I understand it's the opinion of many within CCP that PLEX are very definitely not a vanity-only item themselves, and that there should be no real reason why players of EVE are opposed to gamealtering microtransactions. IMHO, the real difference with PLEX is that value is created for everyone; the seller gets isk for rl cash, the buyer gets gametime for isk, CCP get more subs and combats RMT. Nowhere are items spawned out of nothing, and everyone is fairly happy. Meanwhile, for game-altering MTs like ships and ammo and standings, it cheapens the weight of gameplay and makes everyone feel like they have to pay double to compete; CCP are really the only ones who benefit.
So, now that i've gotten all the stuff everyone else is concerned with out of the way, I did want to address some points here though:
Originally by: CCP Pann As I see it, the chief complaint is regarding the high cost of goods in the Noble Market. Second, many people are unhappy about the CaptainFs Quarters. Third, there are some performance issues with Incarna.
a) regarding the costs of items in the plex store, IMHO the best solution is to cut the prices drastically (maybe 50-100 AUR?) and make the items destructable when you're podded. Reimburse the players who have already bought monocles with some AUR.
Having the items be indestructable sets a bad precedent for future iterations of the store ('why is my monocle indestructable but my ship's paint job isn't?'), and even from your perspective having the prices high and the items indestructable limits the market to the super rich (when it should really cater to everyone, if you're actually looking to make money) and hurts the long-term profitability (why sell half a dozen $70 monocles when you could sell thousands of $.20 monocles multiple times?)
b) CQ. Make the loadin optional. I'm fine with even it being the default setting to load into CQ. The screenshot posted in this thread is perfect; i like the idea of having a feed from a camera drone in your hangar piped directly into your quarters viewscreen as an option, too. That way, everyone can spin ships, loadin/loadout easily, and still get that awesome sense of scale about the size of their ships when they want to.
c)performance. I don't really have a lot to say, apart from moar optimizations are needed and that i'm glad you guys rolled this out incrementally. CQ makes my CPU very unhappy.
Looking forward to the devblog later today, i can safely say this is the longest wall of text I've posted ever. _____________________ Look down. Back up. Where are you? You're on a forum, with the alt your alt could post like. |

Removing the store will remove temptation, and will prove to players that you're serious about preserving the integrity of gameplay, because we don't believe your promises of "only vanity" items.
Remove CQ. You're just not up to the technical challenge. Look at how terrible the avatars look compared to the char creator. And even with low polygon counts, no animations, 1/4 of the closets finished, and no interaction, you're melting people's graphics cards. This is a terrible failure.
Next expansion: EVE online: return of the spaceships. Rebalance every ship type, make POSes not suck, fix the industry UI, rebalance sov and moongoo, etc. This should be an all hands on deck expansion, like Apocrypha was. Dust and WOD aren't making you a cent; nobody should be working on them for six months. Got too many artists in Shanghai? Reskin the most popular ships -- you've done exactly two in as many years (maller, scorp).
July is free for everyone. Reparations. You're not doing this all because you're desperate for cash? That's one way to prove it.
This is the dumbest ******* **** I have ever seen in my life. Might have said since low sec and Null Sec space have so many Issues why not just delete them. This is my "I'm quitting" -message.
I'm sorry, but you seem to be very out of touch with what your playerbase wants. Especially those of us who have been here since 2004/2005 and have many accounts.
What drew me to EVE was the player-created interaction and tales. I watched videos of pirates ganking haulers in lowsec in 2004 and felt that this was a great game. A place where a ruthless attitude and smarts would win the day. I loved the spaceships, I was afraid of losing, loved winning, worked with others in some things that actually unified some players to work across corps and alliances to do stuff.
Those were player-created events, they made me emotionally attached to your game. Not the avatars, not the clothes, not the custom paintjobs for AUR, but the human interaction. That means spaceships, smooth UI to operate those spaceships and balanced environment where multitude of strategies can flourish. And you're not capitalizing on the human interaction part, which more or less means to me that you don't understand your game. In short, you aren't catering to my needs as a customer, which just means I no longer want your services.
Previously, I always felt that in EVE, if an another pilot had something, I could make him lose it - if I only was smart and ruthless enough. I could steal it, shoot him, deceive him, whatever - but with these new clothes and vanity items, the same thing no longer holds. They just hang around in your station or are indestructible when worn, and the player can still interact (in the future) with others - and I can't take his stuff from him. Previosly the only way to be safe was not to undock (i.e. play). But you are changing that, and I don't really want to have any part in the future of EVE where the ruthless basis of EVE is diluted.
Sorry.

I have a big beef with this. They said that we have a limited amount of time and money and that this is like a hobby to us?
Let me decide how much money I want to spend on the game in my own way. Continue to make the game something I want to play, and I will continue to pay for alts.
I'm certain that the alts I run makes them more isk than the MT they are trying to stuff into the game via their "ambulation" scam. However, right now people are unsubscribing alts, which is losing you a heck of a lot more money than whatever you gained from the people that bought the MT stuff.
We love your game, we have alts. That is how you make extra money. Give us more to DO, not more to BUY.

Edited by: Irulan Corinno on 24/06/2011 08:43:49 Incarna and clothes Personally I love the idea of Incarna. Where would Sci Fi series be without walking, talking, interacting characters like Captain Picard, Obi Wan Kenobi, Starbuck, Spock, Teal'c, Commander Adama, Yoda? The majority of people wouldn't be interested in just a series about spaceships so yes, I think Incarna definitely is a good path to take, especially if you want to attract a wider audience.
My main point is: the outrage concerning the clothes and accessoires in the AUR shop not only or not even mainly comes from the pricing itself.
a) If there was an extensive line of "free" clothes to pick from already, a few new exclusive ones for whatever price wouldn't have bothered anyone. As it is now, the choice is extremely narrow. Three shirt types in a few colours and two pant types? It's quite silly that a "God Like" capsuleer with all her money and power can't even afford a simple skirt or long leather jacket, unless she is willing to pay more for it than a T3 cruiser. This is very immersion killing. Next to that, most AUR shop stuff doesn't even look exclusive.
b) The fact that we can't even show our clothes to our fellow capsuleers until the winter expansion and even the CQ is far from finished (very high system reqs, lighting borked in a lot of places) but you already have a vanity shop makes it rather premature and it makes you look greedy. Which doesn't exactly causes a lot of euphoria in your playerbase.
c) I'm sorry to say so but not consulting the CSM was very dumb. Perhaps the one lesson you could learn from this is that you lost contact with your playerbase while you were making your fantastic plans in your offices. Everyone could have predicted this would happen, you aparently didn't. Which is very, very suprising if you really had any feeling with your community.
As a sidenote: CCP's money problem? Well since you insist on the staying power of the Aurum shop I guess you desperately need more money for some reason, purpose or other? Let's say I find it ironically to say the least that you as CCP hardly do anything to retain your new players, nevertheless yearly spend tens if not hundreds thousands of dollars on advertisements (payed by our subscription). And after "power of two" now try to get even more from your excisting playerbase by some RM shop (payed by our subscription). Where will it end? You spend so much on ads and do so little to retain your new players, which isn't exactly cost effective.
In my opinion adding a CQ won't do the trick. I think the following thread in the EVE New Citizens Q&A may cover most of our concerns (even though not everyone may agree with it): Too many veterans. Not enough new players? I think it adresses most valid/major concerns.
If you apparently aren't that concerned about annoying your vets and making impopular decisions, might as well do something to make at least a few more new players stay?

@ CCP Pann.
Firstly, thank you for making a statement regarding this unfortunate situation. It is greatly appreciated.
Secondly, i thing post number 2 sums it up nicely and post 3/4 (i forget which but the one with the list of things it) it to the point (don't agree with the wording but hey, while we are calling spades "spades" let's go with it).
Finally. I've played this game on 2 accounts since May 2003. I LOVE EvE. This latest patch makes me sad. Forget NeX i don't care much for it but i'm not *against* it either. CQ and the sheer scale and number of issues related to useage and general game play are my problem.
The qaulity of this release was asstoundingly (sp?) low. The bit that makes me *angry* is that the community, us, the people TESTING your game for free in our own time told you this weeks ago. Yet it went out anyway. This has happened before with other releases and we thought CCP had learned from it.
Maybe it's time to learn this lesson again?

Sorry, but this is utter bull. CQ is a fantasic technical achievement. As someone who can actually run Incarna smoothly, I can tell you, with everything maxed out, it looks very slick! And the character creator? It far overshadows anything anyone else has. Ever played Mass Effect? Their characters can't hold a candle to the truly ingenious 3D characters of Incarna!
The 'animatronics' are amazing too. I was standing in my CQ the other day, and lingered a bit, and suddenly noticed my character was staring at her nails for boredom! Seriously, Incarna is the pinnacle of character design.
I know it's hard to keep issues separated when a general anti-CCP frenzy is ongoing. But Incarna really is a masterpiece -- technically, at least.

I also second this. I love PvP. Simply love it. It is the motivation for me to play MMORPGS.
I got disgusted with Ultima when they started changing pvp to let you keep stuff, and eventually quit when they expanded insurance to cover every item you can own.
SWG eventually ruined their game by making everything free and easy.
Now you guys are giving people fancy items that are unassailable by the enemy player. Ridiculous, and unacceptable.
If I cannot blow it up, I don't want it in the game, and it has no purpose here.

Okay CCP, here I will lay out the way to success for EVE ( and thus avoid NGE'ing EVE slowly but steadily ) :
- Get rid of microtransactions, period, EVE is a single sharded sandbox based on a premium monthly subscription fee. It is a dinosaur in the industry yes, one that can count on 360000 active paying subscriptions with a premium price of 15G per month, there are very few MMORPG's in the world that can boast this. The way EVE growth works is you improve and expand the game, more people join = more profit. Up until now, EVE has always been growing, slowly, but steadily. However, once you start shaking the foundations, **** can hit the fan real fast. I have been there and done that, several times ( SWG-Pre-CU-NGE , DAoC-ToA-NF , ... )
- Make Incarna optional : put back the old hangar, make a nice little button "Disembark ship" where you leave your ship and enter CQ, this has several benefits : Better immersion There will be no impact on the spaceship game when something breaks incarna If Incarna gets a seperate interface, breaking the spaceship interface won't impact incarna Better performance for multiple client systems, while not having to stare at a wallpaper. Letting people feel they have a choice. - Go SWG Pre-CU-NGE style on Incarna ( SWG had over 300k subs Pre-CU-NGE, thats a nice base to start on no? ) Players make everything : clothing, furniture, drugs ( boosters ), etc. Players do everything : dancers, barbershop, tattooshop, etc. Players run everything : shops, production, etc. Players heavily socialize, make friendships and never want to leave EVE again. - Add all of this at NO ADDITIONAL COST for the customer. - Keep improving the Spaceship game at the same time.
Once all of this is implemented : see the playerbase grow from 360k to over 600k subs in a few months.
Profit.

my questions to you ccp
why when you said CQ woudl be optional did you make mandatory?
why are you wanting MT to give people items that give them an in game advantage when you said it woudl be just vanity items?
how many peopel have to cancell there accounts before you make CQ optional and go back to only selling vanity items?
would love to cancell my 8 accounts and CQ has reduced me to only playing with 3 at a time max, cant unfornatly as there all pay with plex. unless you make CQ optional like you said they will not be renewed.
used to have respect for you ccp,i used to defend you when things were bad, even when the server was crashing and expansions messed up pc's. i belived in what you were doing and where you were going with eve. now all that comes to my mind is '**** you you money grabing bunch of ****s' id liek eve and ccp back to how it used to be, not this, not this

Warning: Non english speaker, expect grammar/spelling mistakes.
The last 24 hours or so i have been debating back and forth weather or not i should post about this at all. Before i say anything i will make it clear that i speak for my self, and my own personal feelings regarding what is going on.
I have been playing eve since late 04. Yes i do realize that this character is not that old. This character, which is now my main, was started when they introdused the first power of two offer and the new bloodlines came. I also realize that even if im an older player few will know me,and even less will care about what i have to say,so this post is more for peace of mind then anything else really.
During my time in eve i have seen things go up and down. I have dealt with the drama,i have whined about nerfs like everyone else (just not in public ;) ) ,but more importantly i have seen people come and go. Its just how online games are, people get burned out, have to focus on real life and so on, but i have never seen anyone leave because of something you have done, and i have always been proud to know that if they came back, they would still find me right where i belong. In eve,in my corp making bad jokes and occasionally threatning to rip peoples heads off for loosing ships in stupid ways ;)
This however is different. And before you think otherwise, this is not about the whole buy ingame items for real life currency,or incarna or CQ or the missing engine trails or any of that. I actually looked forward to incarna,i have been since it was still called ambulation
But you lied to me,to us as a whole... Its not that long ago that i defended you with theet and claws (sorry again Akita), and around the same time i made my first angry rant here where i attacked the majorety of the eve communety because of some whining about the new forums. I know im naive, but i never thought that you would purposly try and go back on your promises, and that hurts..a lot.
You used to be the one company out there that actually wanted to evolve with the players, you wanted to keep the vets around, you wanted to ensure that your players where happy, people you your self used to play with. But reading this, seeing how it was handled, even im starting to understand that this is not the CCP i used to love. I guess you might have your reasons tho, either greed,or simply that your bored with EVE and want it to end or some other unknown reason. No matter which one it was,you should have been honest with us about it...
And i also realize that you can just say "This was just sent around to our employees to get an discussion going,it was never set in stone" but it wont make a differense. You said this would NOT happen, over and over again. If you actually meant that you wouldent have a need to discuss it,internally or public. I dont know what you can say to make this look like an honest mistake, and im sorry about that because i truly wish you could.
Do i want to quit because this? Well not that it would matter if i did,but unless you change your mind about this i will for the first time be faced with a a choise i hoped i would never have to make. Will other people? I cant speak for them, but no matter what i think many are pushed one step closer to the edge. But i hope with all my heart that you will be able to say something that makes me look like a fool for distrusting you.
Im sorry for the wall of text, but sometimes its better to get things out and knowing that even if it was never noticed you tried to let them know what you feel.

If thats removed, or seriously re-worked, to the point that clothing only costs say 100 aurum, then that would be reasonable as one plex will generate enough aurum to outfit a character, and possible provide a little extra for items that belong in the cq. Notice: NONE of these items will be game enhancers, just vanity. Thats the position im taking.
I like the prospect of walking in stations, and i can see that you guys have put a lot of thought into the idea...it shows with CQ. The people who are having hardware issues, well, they should have taken better care of their gear. However, an option to either exit the ship or remain in hanger view should absolutely be added to the game, so it gives both sides what they want and doesnt catre to people who actually have high-end systems or knows how to properly maintain their older systems. Lets face it, the majority of these 'exploding' motherboards and fried gpus are because of lack of preventive maintenance and operation in environments that are extremely damaging to the system. That is the users fault, not CCPs. That being said...the station spin option that a lot of people want back will help them, and reduce some of the pressure on CCP.
I like the turrets, and their graphics, and i believe this is a non-issue. They look great and work great.
The most important issue is something you have been avoiding the last 70 pages to the best of your ability, or some of your hot headed CCP persons have come in with some quick, seemingly witty remarks that only make them look worse to the eyes of the public. For your games sake, ccp higher ups, i suggest you give your PR reps the go ahead to make an official comment soon...because as you can tell, people are already leaving in droves and it will only continue because of the simple fact that no one trusts you anymore. No one trusts the words of trusted individuals that you threw to the wolves to try to calm them down, so what makes you honestly believe that we should believe anything else you say?
Until you confirm, in writing, in an agreement of some sort, that there will either be a) no more NEX or b) the nex will only distribute vanity items that do NOT enhance the game...then your game is on a downhill slope and will eventually fizzle out and die, and will be remembered as the greedy CCP bastards that killed it. Thats all i want to see personally, that you are going to do away with even the thoughts of adding game enhancers to the game that can be purchased with real money. At this point, you dont have any other choice if you want to save whats left of your reputations, and your community.
Just do it, at least try to earn the communitys trust back through a selfless act...you might be able to save your game and the reputations you had before you introduced this ridiculous idea.

The shareholders are going to eat management alive when subscriptions plumet.
Except that might have in fact been forecast ahead of time. If so shareholders will wait for the annual report to see if year to year numbers are down. This gives CCP time to implement more revenue generation and Subscription drives. Should sub numbers go down but revenue per sub go up it'll be a net gain in the eyes of the shareholders as it will indicate a shift towards a more profitable model. ***By coffee alone I set my mind in motion, by the beans of Java thoughts acquire speed, the hands acquire shaking, the shaking becomes a warning, by coffee alone I set my mind in motion.*** |

Remove CQ. You're just not up to the technical challenge. Look at how terrible the avatars look compared to the char creator. And even with low polygon counts, no animations, 1/4 of the closets finished, and no interaction, you're melting people's graphics cards. This is a terrible failure.
A technical masterpeices, REALL!? My computer, no power house by any means, but very capable, can play most modern games on very high graphics settings at a playable frame rate, even if they are very large worlds/levels. The CQ, which is just a one room apartment, plays horribly on the exact same system. I'd say thats far from a technical masterpeice.

Maybe because they're out of money, DUST and WoD are over budget, while their investors are broke and screaming.

Is there anything else you've lied to the playerbase about (MT for vanity ONLY) that we might like to know about?
Soundwave will NOT be fired nor should he. I personally would not like to see one of the driving forces behind the Alliance Tournament and the spiritual leader of Team BFF take a fall for agreeing to present one opposing side of the microtransaction debate in an internal newsletter.
I have seen people given written warnings, reprimands and indeed escorted from the building by security for a lot less than airing their opinion in a company news letter when it was the company who asked for it (their opinion) in the first place.
I too do not wish to see anyone fired. It's not like he was spawning T2 BPO's for his friends or anything. But that, right there, is a written warning in any large business. I'm sorry but it is.

Originally by: Tyrranous Essentially, this is my first post after almost 3 years of playing Eve. I don't know if thats relevant or not, but it does seem that the events of this week have made lots of people like me speak up.
I commend CCP Pann for appearing to step up, but I must admit I question your motives for doing so. Repeating "I'm really sorry" a few times does go some ways towards calming people down. Failing to mention the leaked document and trying to convince people that the number 1 complaint is pricing on pixelated clothes suggests you have either (a) missed a fairly obvious issue and are therefore not the person to be engaging in this conversation or (b) are just trying a bit of sleight of hand (e.g., "these aren't the droids you are looking for"). I must admit the behavior of CCP thus far in regard to this issue leads me to believe the explanation is more the latter than the former.
Honestly, do you think the primary issue here boils down to pricing on the Noble Exchange?
For whatever its worth, a few things that I think are the issue:
1. Obviously, what's up with the leaked document? (Again, I'd have thought that one obvious, but it may be that another hint is needed).
2. Lots of dev time appears to have gone into making avatars and clothes. What about dev time to promote "excellence"? - do you remember the work of the previous CSM? Team BFF is a step in the right direction, but it doesnt seem quite enough, especially in light of the (in my opinion, well deserved) :ccp: rage.
3. What is the longterm vision for Eve? Is it more Incarna, more clothes, more MT and same plodding pace on fixing/iterating/widening out the game?
I think you guys are probably smart enough to realize that your answers to these issues are fairly important - if the vision is to bleed the golden goose, then you must know people will move on - 8 years of MMO experience must have taught you that at least.
re: Trust again, I am noticing that Sleight of hand you mention too Tyrranous. It starts to feel like they treat us as dumb animals more lately too, insulting and trust-destroying. Since when did a political degree become necessary for game companies?

Originally by: glepp Ok CCP, since you said you're reading everything in this thread, here goes.
I've cancelled 2/3 accounts, and will be cancelling the last one as well. All run out in sep-nov, so that is the time window for me to get interested in the game again.
Why am i unsubscribing?
1. I don't like being lied to. You said to the CSM and us a few months back that Microtransactions would only ever be for vanity items. You lied. You are not only discussing it internally, you're implementing it, as confirmed by Scott Holden in your internal newsletter.
2. Microtransactions for non-vanity items will ruin the sandbox. The PLEX system is good, because it deals with RMT, however game-imbalancing it may be. I can accept that. What i cannot accept is that in a player-driven sandbox, you introduce non-player made items that give an advantage, available for RL money. That goes against the very basis of the Sandbox idea, and will ruin the game for me.
3. Forcing unwanted game elements on your customers because you want them to be Awesome. Captains Quarters suck. They make it harder for me to use your actual content, internet spaceships. I don't want to watch my characters bum in station, i want to be out flying. You're making that harder. If Incarna and CQ at some point becomes awesome and adds content to the game, then people will use it. Don't force us to watch your stupid space-barbie showcase when it adds no content to the game.
How can you fix this? 1. HTFU and admit that you lied, and apologize so I can believe you. 2. Confirm once and for all that EVE will have no microtransactions for non-vanity items. 3. Make CQ and Incarna optional.
Don't do this and lose your cash cow. If you don't see the writing on the wall, then you deserve to failcascade and die along with the other failed MMOs.
