Just the very TONE of the rhetoric in that company 'newsletter' was enough to turn my stomach. Insulting, facetious, haughty.......and absolute contempt for customers drips out of almost every single article in that rag.
No legitimate company I have ever worked for would allow a publication of that deep level of unprofessionalism to be circulated through any kind of official route.
I cannot even re-read it because of anger, over just the very TENOR of the words.....my emotions around the content are of an entirely different order.
The level of self-centeredness AND contempt from the CEO's even, and snarky sarcasm masking as company policy discussions of future plans.......
Something is rotten in the Heart of CCP.
And judging by the videos and threads and all from Fanfests and such, I would not be surprised at all if there is just way toooooooooooooooooo much partying going on there on the Mid-Atlantic Shaky-Rock.....
Endgame Alcoholism is what I'm talking about here.
It perfectly explains that level of self-centeredness and blatant contempt for customers, the unprofessionalism of that newsletter, the seemingly random decision making and always, always "grabbing for the shiny............."
It's hard to make sensible business decisons during hangovers.
Maybe something beyond alcohol even.
I've seen alcohol and constant partying bring down PLENTY of Tech companies of all sorts way back during the DotBoom here in San Fran. IT HAPPENS.
Like Steven Spielberg says when asked WHY his film 1941 was such a chaotic fiasco with a couple of great moments: "C*c**ne gives you the best ideas and the WORST ideas.....all at the same time".

I agree.
The "culture" developed at any company/corp will eventually affect it. And if this culture is rooted in DEBAUCHERY in any way shape or form, then professionalism will lack and it will die...taking the rest of us with it.
But yes, that leaked memo reeks, not just for its content but for the contempt for the player-base, read in-between the lines.
Good post...thanks

I don't care what ccp does with other games it has, but this is not the right direction for EVE. Surely there's room for one serious niche mmo?

It does make you wonder when a company that constantly make jokes about its massive alcohol abuse does something as dumb and immature as this.

Sounds like you have a handle on things. I wish you the best in life.

Your observation has a very uncomfortable ring of truth to it. I've been finding it hard to bring myself to even log into Eve. Not because of the CQ or any of that stuff...but this news letter and what it implicates.
It feels a little like meeting a rock band you really like and finding out they are jerks.
The more I think about this, the more bummed I get.

I've been pondering it since I saw footage from Fanfest 2010. This did not start for me this week. ************

I didn't see that. What I saw was pretty clinical. "Here's how MTs work." "Here are the potential landmines and issues to consider." "Here's a bit of player/customer psychology into why MTs work." Etc.
What I didn't like was that it presented Eve MTs for in-game advantages as a certainty.

Great post ... you get to the heart of a subtle point about the newsletter.
The phrase "freeloading spectators" (in re Dust) gave the exact sentiment you describe. This company no longer deserves my business.

What we saw was just internal propoganda, nothing more nothing less. I'm convinced a LOT of people within CCP disagree with MT and current strategy.

I'm convinced of that too. Unfortunately I'm convinced that those people have next to no power or influence over the future direction of Eve.

I agree 100% The core of CCP has turned foul. They have been caught, shown their true colors, and are doing their best to appear innocent. Oh well, even the most forgiving bumbling fool will have these events in the back of their head for a long time. Sooner or later, even the dimmest of the dim will see the light.

Absolutely agree - not involving the Director of PR & Comms in something as sensitive and controversial as the newsletter is beyond stupidty. CCP does not have an ethical corporate culture and if I worked there my resination would already be in my managers inbox. I'm sure Monoclegate has had a serious impact on jobsatisfaction and since employees are more important than customers, they need to work hard on employee retention and morale. ----------------------------------------------- "The No A$$HOLE Rule" by Robert Sutton, PhD |

Whether or not it is "taken out of context", you can't help but find the newsletter highly unprofessional (starting with the choice of formatting and font, before you even get to the text). These days, does anyone really believe a document like that won't end up on the internet at some point?
Fearless? Maybe. Stupid? Yeah.

Edited by: Tosser Galore on 26/06/2011 20:34:23 Edited by: Tosser Galore on 26/06/2011 20:33:47 Virtual goods sales can be viewed by some as a nuclear issue. In many cases it may be that the conversation itself could be better managed. It is easy to make decisions without debate, but CCP espouses transparency and unity û two values integral to the recent Economic and Microtransaction Summit held in Reykjavik, which focused on the viability of the virtual goods sales model in all our games.
They obviously got carried away with the prospect of selling pixels.
