Okay this is going out to the CCP staff and, in specific, the CSRs of CCP for Eve. First off let me say that I worked at Blizzard for 2 years and that I delt mostly with World of Warcraft as a GM, Specialist, Account Investigator, and a couple other things. I've been through a lot and seen a lot of internal structure and gears. I'm not tooting my own horn here, just letting you know that I know how things normally work.
The amount of 'rioting' that's going on in-game is ... well, it's sad. WoW was no stranger to protests intended to crash the server and cause problems. We didn't just let them do it, though. We crushed them. We took several teams of GMs on the floor and located, identified, and suspended or closed the accounts of the player who were attempting to cause havock on our realms. This, I think, is what you should be doing now.
Now trust me I'm aware of how short staffed you all probably are. I was working manditory 60 hour weeks minimum and we were STILL behind in tickets, but this can't be helping you any. In WoW we had several ways of dealing with people or exploits. One was was to drop a Blizzard Guardian down in an area that was programed to Death Touch anything that comes in site of it. We could freeze, silence, and disable characters at will. We could do lots of things with our client, the console, and a few limited commands. I'm sure you can do the same.
So please, PLEASE get this under control. It just looks like a bunch of children took over the preschool and are now throwing crap all over the place. Go into local, give a few warnings, and then open fire on them. Offer no reimbursements and if they continue at it then give them a few days time off. This is absolutely rediculous. If you guys were headquartered near Orange County I'd offer to drive there and help you but that's not going to happen. Please just do your best.
And to all the players out there, PLEASE stop your whinning, moaning, and *****ing over conjecture, rumor, inuendo and imaginary villains. Nothing has happened or been implimented that affects your game play in any way, shape or form. If CCP comments on possible additions then, by all means, plaster them with feedback or cancel your accounts in protest, but don't ruin the game for those of us who have no problem with what they're doing. You're all acting childish and immature. You're lucky they haven't brought down the hammer on your heads, too. You truely deserve it and their patience is very large indeed to put up with all of your crap.
So that's it. Good luck.

Well, did you roll up to your pc in a black suburban too?
They have all but destroyed the most amazing game community in existance.
It isn't until you "get eve", that you realize just how much the supposed "sociopaths" put into making guides to help their fellow players.
CCP just took a dump all over that.
Thats the problem, and quite frankly they should be ashamed of what they have accomplished.

There are a lot of points the OP makes that deserve a standing ovation. I'd love for CCP to boot a bunch, but if the threats of unsubscribing are real then I guess my concerns are taken care of. It's nice to see things work themselves out.

***** all you want, CCP has done nothing to you that affects you AT ALL. You're all up in arms over something that hasn't even begun to be implimented yet, if EVER. For all you know it's an internal idea, of which there are hundreds each week that get shot down over the course of months.
The idea that clothes for an avatar that doesn't even see the light of day would cause this much of an issue is just pathetic. And the reaction is equally so. This isn't feedback anything helpful to the community or the game.
And when the email that was sent out said something to the tone of, 'This reaction was expected.' they are completely right. You can't change the color of one grass texture in a game without some group of players crying about it and how they're now going to cancel their subscribtion because of a few pixels changing color.
The truth is that most of these 'rioters' only needed a trigger to act like immature brats. The trigger didn't have to be real or important, it just had to seem like it enough for them to go into full idiot-mode. My guess is that the same people who 'riot' in Eve would 'riot' over any other stupid little thing in real life if it wasn't for the fact that they would have their asthmatic asses crushed with a law enforcement boot on their heads.

Originally by: Ne Oublie We didn't just let them do it, though. We crushed them. We took several teams of GMs on the floor and located, identified, and suspended or closed the accounts of the player who were attempting to cause havock on our realms. This, I think, is what you should be doing now.
And this is why that won't work:
1. EVE is not WoW. (That bears repeating.)
2. EVE runs on a single shard; WoW runs on a hundred. What you do in one shard doesn't necessarily affect the other shards; likewise, the communities are more splintered. Even if one catches fire, the odds of that fire spreading are lessened.
3. It's already *caught* fire. This is no longer a case (if it ever was) of a handful of rabble rousers. In order to douse these flames in the kind of quick, decisive way you would be handing out literally thousands of bans.
4. The ice right now is extremely thin; even temp bans today could fairly easily turn into rage-cancels tomorrow. I'm sure that the GMs understand this (otherwise they would have done as you suggested by now).
5. Unlike WoW, the average EVE player has something like 1.7 accounts; a lot of those rage-cancels are going to bring multiple cancellations.
6. It will burn itself out (although CCP's actions do keep throwing fuel into the fire). The servers are already reinforced; they're not going down, and the gates can and have been closed whenever they might have gotten close. Even if they do manage to take down a node, it doesn't take it down for everyone, only the 1-2 thousand or so in that system. (because, as I said, I guarantee you that the systems where this is happening have already been reinforced.) Remember, EVE is not WoW.
7. This has been building up for a long time; it's like a forest fire. When you keep trying to stamp out all the little fires, eventually you're going to get a big one, because stuff builds up. Trying to stop it now will not only not work, it'll just make for even more fuel next time.
8. Because of its single shard nature, the community is much more closely knit; rage-cancels are more likely to spider out than in WoW.
Oop, almost forgot..
9. EVE doesn't have WoW's 8 digit subscription number; cancels are going to be a bigger deal to them.
(All that having been said, if they hadn't nerfed the AoE DD, it'd be funny as hell to see a Titan show up in Jita and DD the place.)

The community of EVE is much more used to having CCP listen to them instead of not only blatantly ignoring them but shoving them off like they don't matter which is what has been shown after the release of all these documents. It will blow itself out and much faster especially if CCP looked like they cared.
