Edited by: Moon Shadowfall on 27/06/2011 00:30:55 Edited by: Moon Shadowfall on 27/06/2011 00:13:05 The following post is only speculation...so no overreaction. I'm honestly curious about the communities thoughts on this potential scenerio.
After pouring through the boards over the past three days when I'm not busy learning this game some things came together that I think people might be interested about. This is what I "think" is happening. I'd like to hear the community's thought on this.
TL:DR--Eve's future is good...how they might be changing the game...It won't effect Tranquility other than vanity items BUT will bring added (needed?) income to this older game.
-Eve's future from some of the "facts" available to us.
--Incarna Released and a new currency made available--
I initially thought that the protestors were wrong, and still laregely are. They are being driven by their love of the game into irrational fear BUT I think they are PARTIALLY correct in seeing microtransactions come to EVE. Don't over react...it's not what you think it is.
--Closed lips and evasion on the questions and why CCP isn't or can't talk---
They have a huge announcement coming at the EVE Meet in Vegas on July 16. They are also summoning the CSM to Iceland on June 30 and July 1st for an emergency meeting.
Could this announcement be a transaction shop? I think so...BUT, I think it will only be implemented for a new "Universe" ,a seperate node which may be a FTP with MT options, which would NOT interact with the 7 year (8 year?) Tranquility server and may even be designed to work with their new Playstation offering in the works.
This shift toward a second, or more, "node(s)" would provide the company with needed funding and make their investors happy. It would definitely bring new players to EVE who are interested based ont the game's past success. IT would also support the original core (subbed) population with said funds while protecting the community that has helped make the game successful and enduring. It could even encourage the FTP players to try the original, Tranquility, node and bring it more population in the end.
Again, this is speculation but...
This could be why CCP is so incredibly silent on this 5 day old issue. They cannot release this prematurely...perhaps due to contractual obligations with their investors, or not to give their competitors advance notice. It would also explain why CCP Fallout can honestly make the claim he is not in the "project" at this time OR why CCP Pann can apologize that the company has not been more forthcoming with information.
Could this be the case? If so what are your thoughts?
I would be all for this myself. It would extend the life of the game whiel NOT effecting the core community...

Think of the CSM as a baby passifier to keep the customers entertained with the illusion of them being important, as their purpose is to fund CCP's WoW, called WoD.
That's how CCP sees them, that is how I see them. It is called REALITY.
Eve is that child in the family that will always get 2nd attention to their prize baby, WoD. Eve is reaching its lifespan and they are going to jump to WoD and then stick Eve on life support, but one can argue Eve is on life support already. It is obvious, non commitment to features, just enough to get the funding in place (Incarna is a Trojan Horse for that) then once that is in, that it is purpose. Don't expect much more features outside of that track for Eve in future.
Think of Incarna as a TROLLEY DASH around the mall in a competition to get the highest revenue. It's called a BOOST. You go for the BIG ONE, thieves use it in stores, called a BOOSTER BAG, and hit the store HARD, not one or 2 items in the pockets, a HUGE BLOODY METAL TINFOIL BAG and BOOST IT, one massive HIT.
Eve is not CCP's premium product, World of Darkness will be their premium product in their portfolio. Eve is simply a financial tool to get there. Incarna the vehicle for a revenue BOOST. Eve is eight years old, taht is ancient, competitors are comming out, newer. Eve will get more expensive to play, by stealth. Eve is a test bed for Carbon and MT for their premium products in the pipeline.
The reason for all this rage now, is because customers (players) are only NOW starting to REALISE THIS. Some have been saying this for years, they where bashed. Well they were right.
CCP has done all this "research" with "outside professionals" to get metrics on the Microtransactions in Eve succeeding.
They are "staying the course" and we are "very predictable".
So, they shouldn't have to bother with us at all and just deploy the system and items full speed ahead.
I think we hit that "metric" that puts WoD at risk.

You are over thinking things. Think more along the lines of George Bush I and "no new taxes" promise and what happened after he raised taxes.

silly speculation unless ccp is weetarded..... never mind. part of the appeal of this game is that it is ONE universe and there is a sense of community that i can interact with anyone who plays eve. and to set up a second universe would be stupid considering wod and dust the other two projects that eve is propping up and will probably fall flat on there face. ps3 yay i want my credit card to pay for a hackers leet new comp.....

I agree that it's one community. But the community has dwindled a bit. EVE is "old" for an MMO. This scenerio would inject new players to the experience without effecting its core community... don't you think? I would hardly call it ******ed thinking in today's shift away from subs and towards the FTP system.

why would new players come play on eves reviled new node? all the bad press has peaked interest? Also how far into your ass did you actually have to reach to pull out "maybe there'll be another node"?

You forget a few little important things here...
Eve has peaked on customer count (and sometimes dipping a little). So much so that CCP even have to get existing customers to pay twice or 8 times more than your typical MMO (multiple accounts), that also shows that Eve is not a big market. Eve is a tiny niche market, hardly mass appeal. see ↑ Eve is entered Life support, REVENUE "BOOST" mode CCP feel the pinch when a small number (tens of thousands) customers leave because in reality, that translates into 2 to 8 times the actual number of players, because of the MULTIPLE ACCOUNT issue.
World of Darkness is MASS MARKET. It is CCP's WoW. World of Darkness is such a mass market, they can absorb churn easier due to the VOLUME of customers (unlike eve).
Sure eve looks a big revenue maker, it is, but compared to WoD projected revenue, YOU ARE TINY, those numbers mabye big to you, but certinally not to CCP (also referr to employees always saying Eve never makes enough revenue)

I realize that all the "community" has done is rage for days over this. Is it that difficult to apply some thought without flaming in just ONE post?
Thanks for your..ahem...input.

No I don't agree. This is what happens when business projections are based on wishful thinking and not sound data. CCP wants EVE to fund Dust and WoD and when those two projects are eating up funds faster than EVE is growing, then you get pie in the sky fixes such as turning EVE into Barbie Online rather than actually making EVE more fun to play.
Call it hubris, arrogance, or Sony Envy, but the guy making the decisions has zero business sense.

And I bet it's no coincidence that it's the day after subscription renewals all go in.
Stop living in a dream world, CCP's not gonna build a separate server network to keep the dwindling elder population happy.

Of course they want to fund their future.
I DON'T disagree that WoD in particular may be where their focus is...BUT they have to get to that point.
TO your second sentence...the ENTIRE PROTEST has been based on speculation. Why fault me for my own?

A year ago they said no MT in EVE, and yet today there is MT in EVE, that is hardly speculation to question CCP based on real evidence. There is zero evidence that another shard will be opened.

Okay on that point I agree with you. Business models change...they often MUST change. Yeah they screwed the pooch on this and deserve the backlash.
Zero evidence exists that the vanity MT will become pay to play as well though. The latest devblog, "while still unclear", suggests no Pay2win. I suppose we ALL have to wait a week to find out...which admittedly sucks. My scenerio could be part of that reason.
Hell I could be totally wrong. I'm just looking for honest discussion about this as a possibility.
