One ray of hope to counter my previous cynical post...
I think I've heard they're developing this game in Singapore, and as we know for the Sony platform. Maybe they've actually done some research and think they have a handle on the asian market.
Competetive RTS games like Starcraft are crazy popular in Korea, the Sony platform sells very well in Japan, and they do love the microtransactions over there.
No idea, but maybe we're not the target market at all. Better re-map your keyboard for kanji if you want to call those planet strikes.

this bothers me every single time, when my toon is in station my PC is close to melting due to high load (lol).

That's quiet true. CCP makes bad moves after bad moves.
Introducing AUR economy instead of working on the game is a fail. Making of Eve a P2W type of game is a fail. Developping a Playstation-only FPS is a MASSIVE fail.
WoD will have to be one hell of a game to make it up to that. Oh wait ! GoW2 is coming. WoD stand no chances.

I had already thought it was something like this, by in the light the leaked doc, it seems CCP has gotten some sweet deal from Sony to release dust on ps3 only. While saying that "They are reaching for a different market" they must know a good portion of eve players would also like to participate what might be the largest ever expansion of eve online, forcing them to buy PS3s if they dont have one. Its a money grab and a slap on the face of the eve community.

Dust is going to be a stellar addition to New Eden...can't wait for it myself. And from what I've seen and know so far, I believe it will attract a rather large and rabid fanbase (even if it is "niche" compared to other FPS games). ~Gnosis~ |

We all know it will be mildly interesting to the bulk of PS3 users initially. Then they will get bored and go on to something new.
Within a year the only people playing Dust will be EVE subscribers with a PS3.

The first sentence I quoted really isn't true. People who play shooters (or RPGs, or RTS's) tend to have one or two favorites. They will continue to play these shooters for years, even though new games are introduced constantly. So what Dust needs to succeed is enough initial sales to reach a critical number of fans who will play long-term.
Your second sentence is more likely. And if the game flops on release, it will probably not reach "critical mass".

This game will fail to produce enough revenue to overcome the developing costs.

Yes it will fail, no doubt really. Though since CCP seems to spend 90% of their budget on putting ads all over the web they might get their money back. Cant see the game being popular for long.
As for peoples PC's getting hot, thats funny. No game can make your PC components run over 100% of their capabilities. If your pc cannot manage the heat its components create then you are doing something wrong.

Are the kids still going on about vampires?? I thought that was 2008. Oh well, you know fashion, by 2014(+?) when the game is released, maybe vampires will be cool again. And goth never goes out of style ... just not sure if they'll be willing to give up their cigarette money for a virtual eyebrow ring.

I was actually planning on getting it untill I found out it was MT based - though no info was released at all, it did sound to me that its more about buying weapons which is better - and that would absolutely ruin it, and im not exactly a fan of MT in any aspect at all.
Though vanity items is acceptable, I simply can't accept buying items that has impact on gameplay even if you can earn it through ingame mechanics.
And well, after what CCP also just pulled off here, that just further put me in a position where I most likely won't be buying it at all, even though I believe the idea behind the games concept is quite awesome - simply can't afford to pay to buy items to upgrade my character with real money, where as i'd most likely be at a disadvantage since other people would most likely have more money to get even more upgrades for their character and would certainly not prove to be a fun experience at all for me.
Such a shame really, was really looking forward to it >_<

I dont think it will fail, just fail to reach its potential.
It may turn out to be a fantastic shooter, however that isnt so much the point of it.
EVE is a niche game, with DUST being a console exclusive, im kinda finding it hard to believe the average player is going to care much about the outcome of battles just their K/D ratio. I know that sounds a little too general and i apologise, but only because its something i suffer from myself, often times i just care if i have fun in the match, winning is just a bonus. This will be at odds with what we the pilots want, if we're paying substantial amounts of money to DUST mercs, we're going to want a good job done properly, and im just struggling to imagine many players caring at all.
Though we'll just have to wait and see, personally i hope there is NO level based progression- this way DUST players will rely on the income gained from the capsuleers to upgrade their characters, hopefully this will spur more effort to win matches.

Another one who who is clueless. DUST will be the Anti COD, BF3, MOH Blah Blah. Those three game I just mentioned all have the same concept. I'm a newb in EVE want to know how I heard about EVE thru a game called MAG (Which has the same concept as Dust) MAG is the anit COD. Those are the players that Dust will attract. CCP already stated that Dust will be a thinking person shooter. LOL do you think people who play COD and the like think LOL LOL LOL LOL.
Look how EVE is set up do you think COD players want a shooter that has the complexity of EVE um hello did you see the COD commercial "BE THE ULTIMATE SOLDIER" AKA be a selfish bastard. If CCP can nail down the concept along a with a great game play Dust WILL BE THE FUTURE of FPS gaming.
Now IMO EVE having about 50,000 players online will help keep DUST going. If a trashy game like MAG with all its problems still have 5,000 people playing it on a daily basis. There is no doubt in my mind that DUST will be successful.

Yep, this is fairly obvious IMO. Solely PS3 was the worst choice CCP could have made... it's basically a gigantic "**** you" to their main demographic. Add in their intentions of hardcore MT in Dust, and there's little doubt it's going to be very unpopular.

Shanghai, China. Not Singapore.
The development work is still managed by CCP and judging a game's success by where the code monkeys live is, well, ignorant. It is the fools who are designing / managing the project and funding stuff that count.

I think this point sums it up for me, even if they get the hype and get the figures at launch I find it hard to imagine console players maintaining an interest in it long terms and changing that is the real challenge. Good luck to them though, it's a brave move.
You've obviously never played any modern FPS game. Battlefield, Left 4 Dead... Call of Duty 4... and how the **** can you overlook Halo, people still play the original...
Perhaps YOU dont play FPS on consoles, but a LOT of people do. For a PC gamer like me, and i guess you... it can be easy to overlook the console as a FPS platform. I indeed enjoy my mouse for superior marksmanship! but, there are millions of people who dont even have a home computer, or at least not one capable of running modern games. Consoles are many people's only source of videogaming.
I think this is the very reason CCP is targeting consoles. because they know its an entirely different audience, completely separate from EVE's player base. They want to bring in more customers. And before you go off about 'ccp greed' etc, realize that more ccp customers = more victims for you in eve, so relax.

CQ has shown just how much this Carbon technology will be worth in an FPS. They can't even get a decent framerate for one toon in a single room without turning modern PCs into ovens. What do you think will happen when they try the same codebase on consoles that were designed years ago? I'll give you a hint: Mummy and Daddy won't be happy when Junior sets the family room on fire trying to play Dust. Don't even bother arguing this is a first implementation and they'll improve the code. By now all the CQ coders are working on code to force you to buy $1k pants to power your internet spaceship. One pair of pants = one AU in warp. Fixing bugs is for suckers, not for people who wear $1k pants!
I pity the fool who licenses CCP code!
I'm not sure what you're talking about. Im running incarna with max settings on a 3 year old 400$ computer. Its running pretty goddamn smooth for me. Perhaps you need a new computer.
And, i'm not supposed to argue that videogames and computer programs in general dont get better as time passes? oh my... you clearly have no idea when it comes to programming, or computers for that matter.
If CCP went an entire year without any new expansions, just simply fixing the current bugs... eve's population would dwindle down to nothing.
Consider eve is a game, and thus form of entertainment. just like an amusement park, you can only ride the same rollercoasters so many times before it gets boring. This is why themeparks will add new rollercoasters, new games, new shows, etc. Do i enjoy watching puppet theatre at Wonderland? no. But someone does. And its causing them to bring their wallets. That is what a company is all about.
Im not sure why people think CCP is some kind of magical entity that never profits from its business. CCP is here for your money. plain and simple. If they stop making money, then they stop providing you with an eve server. Your dollars pays for their vacations, their BMW's and their high end alienware computers. This is the only reason they are making this game. They dont do it so you can have fun, they do it to make money.
Be proud that CCP is ripping off these idiots in the NeX store! All of this money is going into CCP's pockets, which is paying for your enjoyment. If you do not like this concept, you can simply quit playing videogames. CCP is actually one of the better game companies. Have you guys even seen the TF2 store? 40 dollars for hats! 60 dollars for guns you can get in the game for free anyway! sounds bad untill you realize, you dont have to pay a goddamn dime and the hats give you no tactical advantage.
