Microtransaction (MT) in EVE Online.
With the introduction of Aurum (AUR), EVE entered the world of micro transactions (MT). The concept of micro transactions is actually pretty good. The concept has proven itself. Look for example at the XBOX360 market. You can buy Microsoft Points and with those points you can buy content for your games, avatars or even games. The same is for the game League of Legends. These are examples of market strategies that have proven themselves. You can choose to invest some extra money in the game and have premium items such as skins or avatars.
I'm totally fine with how that system works unless it is becoming Pay to Win (P2W). P2W is a system where you can buy currency with real life money such as AUR. With that currency you can buy items which actually have a use in game, such as ammo etc. Most of the stuff will be better then the standard items bought with in game money. This is because you will need a reason to buy those items, no one is going to invest money in items that are worse then standard, free, items. This is obviously a market strategy. My experience with this is that it will change the game play and probably even kill the game. A beautiful example is World of Tanks (WoT). WoT is free to play and uses MT. MT is used there to buy premium tanks, ammo and even experience. This totally ruined the game for me. Because even how good your tank was leveled. If you had a premium player against you, you was likely to die. Just because of the ammo, it did almost double damage. So if you wanted to win, you had to buy premium stuff. Which is the reason I stopped playing.
This is an issue many EVE players have at the moment. And I totally agree with them. Many players spent years learning skills and gathering ISK. And they now fear that EVE is becoming P2W. Why? Well, there are some good reasons to believe EVE is becoming P2W. In the blog of 27 of June from CCP Zulu it is stated pretty clear. I quote: ôWe will start out with a rather limited number of items initially, carefully measuring the demand and how it impacts the economy. As time progresses, we'll gradually introduce new items and revise our strategy. We've also discussed this issue in depth with the Council of Stellar Management and will both consult with them and keep them up to date every step of the way.ö So it is clear they will add more items. But they don't insure us it will stick to vanity items only. And haven't answered the questions regarding it yet. This worries me.
Then I have another point many miss. What about the market strategy and PLEX? Here are some pictures which will help explain the models (Not including subscriptions) Old situation:
New situation:
Future situation?
Well the old situation is how we know it. You can choose to subscribe by paying CCP an amount of money each month or by buying PLEX on the market. You can also choose to buy PLEX with money and sell that plex on the market for ISK. Pretty straight forward. The new system is a bit more complicated. You buy PLEX either by isk or money. Which you can convert to AUR which lets you buy items which you can sell on the market for ISK. And use that ISK for buying new PLEX. That got me wondering. Why in earth do you need to convert PLEX to AUR? That seems a very useless step. Unless... Yes, another change in the market system. That's why I also included a future situation. That's the way how I think it is going to be. Which is the removal of PLEX. So no more ôfreeö subscriptions. From now on you have to buy AUR with real life money, use AUR to buy items and sell those items for ISK. No more free subscriptions.
I'm still waiting for CCP to come up with answers. I want to know what my future regarding this game is. Well this was my view of how I thi

Well this was my view of how I think this will end. Anyone here with other suggestions? And please stop ranting about the high prices for the current items. You are not forced to buy them.

Did you ever spend real money for some virtual item that was later nerfed or removed or deemed unworthy in the long run? |

Yes.. World of Tanks for example, I did buy a premium tank, 2 weeks later the whole structure of the tech tree was changed, and made the tank pretty useless. And that's another reason why I am against P2W.
How about you?

Since the first day I played EVE (May 2004) I was challenged by players who bought isks with real money. First via the Real Money Traders, then by the intermediates of Plex. There was also a lot of competition from the botters who made a lot of isks.
I could complain all the time of this unfair competition, but I preferred to play than to waste time moaning. And today I do not fear the competition because I know that in the long term, the experience of the game and thinking that will make the difference. Aurums won't change anything imo
Of course I never bought an isk for real cash. Only played the game. And I had a life also

Agreed... everyone thinks they NEED the monocle. But you don't, and if you want, go grind ISK to get one. No need for real $$$ |

Ofcourse I grind ISK. I never bought a single ISK. But my fear is that certain items will only go for AUR and will not be avalible for ISK. Now you still can get all those items for iskies, but in the future... My guess it will become AUR only. Whqt about that?
