Yes yes another of these thread I know. Please bear with the returning noobie here.
Main is a caldari cross trained into Amarr and Gallente. Currently for lvl 4 missions I fly either an Abaddon or a Domi depending on need. I have t2 tank skills for armor and shield and decent drone skills. Topping off some support skills and working on more gank. I definitely enjoy the Abaddon more is most missions, starting to learn to fit a bit better with ranges and lowering the tank when I know I can control aggro.
I fly ALOT of missions. My question is, for somone who does more missions then pvp what's a good ship to go for? Nightmare seems amazing but am I asking to just get ganked in it? (This is eve people gank crap ships for giggles at times I know nothing is safe...ever). It's the faction BS or Marauder debate that is making me insane at the moment.
Thanks in advance. |

Honestly if you've got no caldari skills as of right now I'd stick to the paladin. Training time will probably be roughly the same but paladin is frankly a tad more versatile pve-wise.
Paladin does both shield and armortanking decently(Nightmare will only do shield) and it gets a few advantages in terms of looting and cargo(whoo, boosters!). It also gets a very handy web bonus for everything non-missions(or anomalies obviously). Parrots, commence!

I did a bit too much random experimenting, have Caldari BS aswell as the Amarr and Gall. Missile skills are only good through the drake. Turrets are more fun least for now.

Well, might aswell get a nightmare for training wheels of sorts. It's good, I just prefer the paladin. You'll want both BS's at 5 or marauders 5 respectively however.
You won't ever get ganked for flying a faction BS alone. If you get ganked you've done something else to motivate it, be it fitted it expensively or ****ed someone off. Yes, there is of course the offhand chance of running into someone that just happens to want to kill you. The likelyhood of that happening is however negligible. Parrots, commence!

You shouldn't aim for just one ship. It's fun to be able to fly something different once in a while. Here's what I've used so far.
CNR - Gets the job done really fast but it's a damn ugly ship. Rokh - Sexy looking thing with a hellish tank but lacks in dps. Tengu - Great tank, great dps but not as good as CNR. Legion - Does everything the Tengu does just with a bit less dps & tank. Sleipnir - My personal favourite with over 1000 dps tank, 800+ dps while still going over 500 m/s. Drake - With maxed out skills & good fit it will tank almost anything but it lacks in dps and mobility. SNI - Great tank but lacks a little bit in DPS. Looks damn fine though. Rather fly the SNI than the CNR.
You should ask yourself if you really like looting/salvaging in most missions. If that's the case then just go for a Golem or Paladin.

Edited by: Morloch Mortarion on 30/06/2011 21:56:34 Thanks for the info so far you two :)
Loot and salvage is meh. sometimes I want to but in reality if I could make more isk by blasting through it then that's typically more fun. I'd be willing to come back in a salvager on the off times that multi-tasking wrecks seems fun. Used to loot and salvage everything then the loot nerf happened, glad I read about it.
I have considered eventually getting a couple different ships for variety and to run the missions they are respectively better in. Gotta star somewhere to make the isk for that though.

I can fly Nightmare, Golem, Kronos, Paladin etc and I must say I prefer the Paladin the most -particularly if you want to loot/salvage (which on some missions you should).
If you intend to mission a lot Marauder 5 is a great investment and I'd definitely go that route again if I had the choice.

Currently flying paladin/nightmare for missions, but wouldn't reccomend either unless you happen to like never leaving amarrian space.
Honestly, I love the dominix. If I still had my gal pilot it's nearly all I would ever fly. Flexible enough to mission just about anywhere, laughs at the most annoying ewar (jamming), and can be fit for either very hands-on piloting (booster, minimal tank, max sentry) or afk mode (heavy drones, dual rep, cap stable). No other ship even comes close to that flexibility.

You shouldnt be so scared getting ganked in a faction BS, since its mainly the fit that decides whether your ship is worth ganking or not. So just stick to only 1 expensive mod (x-type shield booster for shield tanker or x-type armor repairer for armor tanker) and the rest faction/t2.
Paladin and nightmare are both great ships with their own advantages. If i were you i'd go for the paladin since its more versatile and awesome for running incursions (wich you'll definitely start like doing when you get tired of missions).

I would suggest you nightmare or paladin. Ask yourself if you like salvaging/looting or not and choose one of them. Also paladin is much easier to fit for permatank if you need it for any reason /crappy internet, kids, pets, wife.../.

Awesome info, thanks all. Ultimately will go for the paladin as the distractions do happen some days so that option is nice to have. Quite some time after will use money made from the paladin to get one to squash Angels faster.

Would you mind sharing with me your sleipnir fit? I'll be in one when I get home from vacation, so I'm trying to decide how to fit it.

Dunno why anybody wants to have a 1000+ tank. My paladin has an 600 omni tank and has no issues with either Enemies abound 5 or AE bonus. Maybe smarter to focus on dps, since that decides how fast you can do missions ;)

I've been slowly down grading the tank in my abaddon as I get comfortable and focusing on dropping incoming dps by killing faster instead. I really do prefer to be as active when flying as possible. Every now and then though it is useful to have a flying brick to make a few isk while working or whatever.

With a Low-Grade Crystal set you tank just over 700 dps, do close to 900 dps with drones and are cap stable. With a more decadent shield booster you can tank over 1000 dps but you'll have to give up some firepower to be remain cap stable.
