I dont know if you have had this on your list of features to implement or to ignore but a distress call function in every ship would probably ease up the feeling when you ship is shoot down.
Or make the pvp more interesting. If you are a none pvp mode and are being ganked at a gate by some not soo friendly foes. And you understand that this will be your death you could hit the distress call button.
Might even have an auto on when fire uppon feature in low and null sec. This might even help out on more interesting pvp battle fights that wouldnt occur otherwise and the I saved you I need to save him feeling will make people do it.
Please let me know what you think. I have been playing this game for some time now and feel that something must be added for these situations when you cant do anything just sit and wait to die. At least give the player thats being attacked and ganked by a gang of players a chance to warn others to minimize the "gang at gate feeling" and to give the dead in the water player at least some hope of rescue.

So, someone who's getting ganked should get an unneccessary advantage simply because they're being ganked? Also, if you go into low or null without expecting a fight, something's a miss. This wouldn't make pvp any more interesting. Besides, intel/corp channels and (when that fails) local already give you the ability to let others know about camps and for calling for backup.

some might see the distress signal as an invitation to shoot helpless "non pvp mode" ships. your plan could backfire

I've thought of the same idea also for while. It has bonuses for both the pirates and the carebears. like the carebear can be helped out OR the pirate has bragging rights and a neutral pirate that is roaming past can warp in help kill the carebear or kill the other pirate and THEN kill the carebear.
I would like a reward set in stone if you help the guy though. Or, at least make it a matter of honor if you help the carebear he is obligated to pay the guy who helped out.
