Perpetuum Online wants to run via something called CrossOver Games, which appears to run a Windows VM of some sort, using DirectX libraries. Perpetuum is rated "silver" per their site, meaning the app should be functional but yet will have bugs preventing flawless operation. EVE Online has the same rating.
Therefore, I wonder if anyone here has attempted to run the Windows version of EVE on the Mac via this CrossOver software. Thoughts?

Hmm. Well, given that it crashed twice (in different ways) within a span of 20 minutes, I'm concluding that it's not really playable on a Mac yet.

If you're going to play EVE on a mac it's best to get windows installed as well via Bootcamp, it runs better and you'll also be able to use EFT and other third-party applications.
I must admit still running the Mac client but I intend on changing that soon, it's simply too buggy and unstable at the moment.

The Mac client for me has been fine with the exception of the very annoying jukebox bug, and this is even if I run two clients. (2010 iMac 27" 5750)
I agree though, if/when I start getting serious about EVE again, I'll do the Bootcamp thing.

Edited by: Apollo Gabriel on 03/07/2011 18:44:16 I think Wine will work straight up, however I've not tried it yet. I did read others were able to do it. I'll post here if I get it working.
AG PS Don't use EFT it's ****ty via wine/darwine, PYFA all the way man (works on native mac)

Perpetuum online will run under crossover, but it will run much better under Parallels 6 and XP. I got twice the framerate with Parallel that the crossover/wine client gave.
Also FYI, WOT will run flawlessly in Parallels 6, but you better have a badass machine. My 3.6gz quad and AMD 6850 was barely able to get 25fps with everything on low.
I tried setting up both WOT and Perpetuum under cider, but i'm no expert and couldn't get either to run.

I have no idea what you guys are doing, but Eve runs totally fine except for that captains quarters crap. Turn that off and it will be OK.

The original software is wine, an open source implementation of the windows APIs.
CrossOver is the commercial arm of wine. You do not need it, but it makes managing wine bottles much much easier because it has a nice graphical user interface. Also it is binary instead of just sources that you must compile.
Cider by transgaming is a modified version of wine. The main differences are that cider is not sold/distributed to the end user but to the game developers as part of a partnership. Cider is specifically built and modified to run each of the games it supports. While the codebase is the same (and is mostly the same as wine) the cider version and, in particular, the configuration that is distributed with EvE is specifically tailored to run EvE.
There is no virtual machine. There is just an implementation (in userspace) of windows APIs.
EvE is pretty stable under cider. More than under the unmodified wine/CrossOver.
Perpetuum runs with several problems under CrossOver. Consider yourself lucky if it crashes less than once every 50 to 60 minutes. --- I don't know! I don't know why I did it, I don't know why I enjoyed it, and I don't know why I'll do it again! Bart Simpson. |

I tried it last year, when crossover 10 (?) was just out.
It was horrible. I played with it for a day or 2. But found the dodgy mac client work better overall. All be it slow.
However, in crossover the video performance was ace and i was very very pleased with that. But otherwise it was unstable as hell and full screen didn't work as intended. This seemed to be a known bug along more games and has been a bug for months (at my time of trying). So i gave up and went back to my low settings mac client which crashes like half the time. --

As others have said already, Wine is Crossover is Cider on which a Windows version of EVE runs.
Mac users do NOT have their own specific client! We run a virtually unmodified Windows version of EVE through the Cider (Crossover/Wine) wrapper. I would really appreciate if CCP would hire some real Mac developers to produce a proper Mac client. I'm pretty sure that we make up a sizable number of their customer base. EVE runs so much better under Windows than under OSX where I keep getting repeated crashes in CQ and a reproducable crash when I try to enter the character editor. I have a fairly beefy iMac which runs EVE including CQ very well under Windows. Shouldn't that be the same under OSX?

The reason for owning a Mac is not to use Windows.
I'd happily uninstall EVE rather than install Windows. |

/me wonders if CCP dont do a real native mac client because there isnt enough demand. But there isn't enough demand because many of us with Macs bootcamp to run it in windows?
Does the client report on connection that its a Mac or Windows client? Can CCP see the numbers?
If the client does log (Hello! I'm a Mac) what build it is on connection, maybe we should plan a 'show of hands' one weekend? All of us with Macs actually use the Mac client if only for the one planned weekend, so then CCP get a real figure?
Kind of depends on someone from CCP letting us know if they would actually see/measure the traffic though.

Yes, that is a main reason. And actually it is a good reason. And no, ccp will most likely be able to tell how many mac users use bootcamp and how many use the mac client and how often. I still like my mac client, its good for daily stuff, not for heavy fights, but that is ok, still CCP IMPROVE STABILITY of that mac client, this should be your top priority for the mac port. Kick those cider dev guys hard to improve on cider. Why a forum in the year 2011 still has no automatic double post merge which can be done even with javascript mostly is beyond my understanding. |

CCP don't even know how many of their users have "old" graphics cards. They use guesstimates based on figures from Steam. I doubt they can tell the difference between a copy of EVE running on Windows on a bootcamped Mac versus EVE running on Windows on a Wintel box.
One day they'll wise up and start instrumenting the client to feed back information about drivers installed.
