Got bored with hauling stuff in badgers, so i was thinking about Orca or Providence/Charon. Orca takes me 54 days to train and goes for 450m, freighter takes around 19 days and costs double, but also double the capacity. Can both of them carry other ships without repackaging first? Since repack kills rigs, and i would try to avoid that. Any other suggestions are welcome.

Edited by: Loraine Gess on 03/07/2011 17:44:49 Orca has a limited ship maintenance bay, so it can carry rigged ships, but it has a special space for them (Apparently 400k m3). Freighters can *technically* carry rigged ships, but they need to be inside a courier package. ------------------------------- When I mitigate risks in business, they call me financially sound. When I mitigate risk in PVP, they call me a coward.
I'm still rich, and they're still dead. |

As above poster said. A Freighter can't technically transport non-repackaged ships but if you use and alt to contract it to you it¦s suddenly magically possible. |

Realise that you can't use the ship maint bay on an Orca for hauling goods, just ships (which can have charges on board like ammo, but no normal cargo). So a freighter has WAY more room than an Orca. Thing is that an Orca is faster, can moved rigged ships easier and you can haul stuff without people being able to scan it. You can also make your freighter cargo unscannable but it takes more effort.
Personally; if you really need to haul massive amounts then the freighter is king, obviously. Otherwise the versatility and usefulness of the Orca is much more interesting.

Ehhh, I think that is no longer possible. Your Orca's corporate hangar can be scanned since a few patches.
About making your freighter stuff un-scannable, you talking about double courier contracting it?

This; I'd look at an Orca first. Especially if you are (or plan to be) in a corp that does mining. Also note that you can pick up stuff from space with an Orca, something you can't do with a freighter (i.e. you need to dock to load).

Looks like the corporate hangars are only scannable by NPC's not players.
Quote: The only way to make something unscanable by players is to put the item into a container and then make a courior contract with the container in it.
Someone scanning the courior package will see that there is a container in it, but not what is inside the container.
Anyone tried that^?
I've verified that corp hangar is, again, non-scannable. That glitch was only around for a very short time . I have NOT tested the "put in can, then courier it" trick recently, it always was safe to use and haven't heard any outcries over it lately, so I'm assuming it still works.

Edited by: Rennet Zierlein on 08/07/2011 11:30:09 To give you an idea of relative sizes:
Charon with Caldari Freighter 3 skill holds about 902,000 m3. Obelisk with Gallente Freighter 4 holds about 900,000 m3.
Orca with Industrial Command Ship 4 holds approx 129,000 m3 between the cargo hold and the Corporate hangers. The cargo hold size changes with skill level, but the other three 'holds' don't.
I believe that a rigged Raven is about 460,000 m3 so neither a Charon nor an Obelisk can carry 2 with the skills listed above. Maybe not at all.
As far as I know, most industrials run more than 200,000 m3, so you wouldn't be able to fit two into an Orca Ship Maintenance bay.
I'm also pretty sure that you can only fit two mining barge/exhumer's in an Orca Ship Maintenance bay.
Edit: It's down time so I can't check. |

Maximum cargohold is a All V charon with 981250m3 of cargohold. That is also the maximum size of a courier contract possible, for obvious reasons. |
