Right. Make sure his shirt and pants are all neat and tidy so he can check what's on TV.
Makes utter sense.
Glance at the door from within his capsule, quickly move into the next ship and undock? ---

Edited by: Atsuko Ratu on 05/07/2011 12:01:08 I could see your point if you were the type of person that spends a majority of his time in a station. I could see how the loss of your ability to ship-spin would cause such an immense loss of identity for a Jita trader. For the rest of us, the portion of the game in which you actually use your ship is still there, so your complaint wouldn't really apply.
Loss (noun): detriment, disadvantage, or deprivation from failure to keep, have, or get: to bear the loss of a robbery.

I get that. You're the new type of player that EVE caters to.
Funny, because I feel exactly the same way as Dante, and I've been playing EVE since the middle of 2005. I think you just have issues connecting with people and prefer instead to look at a machine.
The real issue here though isn't that you seem to have some form of emotional disconnect with other human beings, but that you are just another Incarna whiner using "immersion" as an excuse to complain.

CCP were, *ahem* "special" enough to try to tie 2 types of in game commodity to the only real world economy we have.
So a pair of ingame boots will cost the same as a fully fitted ingame battleship.

Indeed I have heard of escapism. I also do not fly massive starships or frequent gigantic orbiting space stations thousands of years in to the future. Escapism in place? Check. Now stop using immersion as a poor and thinly veiled disguise for your whining.

My take on this is that immersion is good, but game mechanics that work is the priority - "immersion" quickly wears thin if it involves repetetive or annoyingly redundant steps that serve no genuine game mechanic function.
Some kind of semi-docked environment between in-space and Incarna is in game-mechanic terms annoying for anyone wishing to transition between the two. It would simply act as a barrier between the two types of content, where none is required.
That's not to say there aren't things that can be done to improve the immersiveness of the current experience, just that things can be done that do not introduce annoying game mechanics. Some examples:
It is difficult and nasty to get out of your pod - how come I appear clean and immaculately groomed immediately?
This assumes no technological development has occured in the Eve universe. Which for a sci-fi setting seems like a rather odd assumption to me. Yes, when pod pilots were rare and mostly military, systems for avoiding annoying goo transitions would have not been a big priority. But over the history of Eve the capsuleer population has boomed and increased in weath and importance significantly. So it is only natural to expect that development will have been done on improving facilities for this rich and powerful group.
We have armor repairer modules that can assemble/reassemble entire ships worth of armor plating quickly, we have nanite paste that can repair modules in-situ. Why would it be so hard for someone to have recently invented a nanite shower for pod pilots that can be built into the hatch-frame of your pod. When you step through it a curtain of nanites washes over you, cleansing the goo and assembling your clothes perfectly around your body. Similarly, when you step into your pod they disassemble your clothes for storage.
Would it have been nice if CCP had added such a backstory themselves? Yes. Is it game-breaking to have to fill in a bit of immersive detail yourself? Not in my opinion.
*I identify myself as a component in a machine. I don't want to have to walk around and remind myself that I'm really still a squishy human *Why would I get out of my pod for 5 seconds when I only docked up to fetch some ammo?
I can see the point here, and I think there are possible short and long-term solutions within the current Incarna framework that would be a much easier sell to CCP than the whole "remove Incarna" rant.
Appreciating that this may have to be implemented in stages, my ideal outcome for smooth transitioning with maximum immersion would be:
1) Add a new game option "Default In-Station Focus" "My Pod" starts you off with a camera looking into your open&drained capsule, with you inside in your underwear covered in goo (tastefully!). For those players who like their human side, but don't like it appearing magically fully-clothed.
"My Ship" starts you off with a camera-drone view of your ship similar to the old hangar view, but able to smoothly transition to a full Incarna view. For those players who want to be a machine. "Do not load station environment" can then become a sub-option of this - with it enabled the ship and hangar are the only things that get loaded, for better performance. With it disabled, the rest of the CQ environment gets background loaded for faster transition to Incarna should you decide to use it.
"My Quarters" starts you off focused on your character, but stood in the quarters themselves rather than the hangar balcony. For those players who find the walk from the balcony annoying rather than immersive.
2) Tapping an Incarna movement key would automaticaly transition you from the Ship to Pod focus.
3) Moving out of the pod automatically passes you through the nanite shower and gives some cool effect of your clothes transitioning onto you. ------- There is no magic Wand of Fixing, and it is not powered by forum whines. |

No it doesn't.
Also, immersion issues aside - they cannot show you coming out of your pod in anything less than your underwear or they would force the various content bureaus to change the age rating of the game, meaning that certain stores - Walmart, for example - would no longer sell the physical copy of the game on their shelves. It might also cause legal issues in certain countries. Consider that in Australia, they simply don't sell 18+ rated games at all. ----- Andreus Ixiris CEO, Mixed Metaphor

Exactly. SO THEY CAN'T DO THAT. AT ALL. WHICH MEANS INCARNA IS A STEP IN THE WRONG DIRECTION.
If they want grown up money then they better offer content for grown ups as well. I'm talking about non-idiotic features and ****ING NAKED BODIES.
Maybe you heard about it but there's a lot of money to be made with pictures of moving naked people on the internet. It's funny that in a ruthless universe as eve there's obviously nothing as deadly as an unclad groin.

I'm sorry, I must've misread your op post, but didn't you pretty much take the sole right to decide what's awful and what's great there? Because obviously your bitter rant is more valid than people who've played on and off since beta and have always wanted an actual avatar besides the ship?
Granted, you should be given a way out of this "crap", because no one wants to interact with a bitter whiner in person, except the other dozen bitter whiners who happen to agree on that particular point. (And on a serious note, yes, there should be an option)

That's all I'm asking. I'm not delusional enough to think I can change your views on what's pretty and what is not. But give me at least a way so I can keep playing the game in a similar fashion as I've come to like it.
