I get that. You're the new type of player that EVE caters to.
New, as in a year and a half ago?

Edited by: Yarrrrrhh on 05/07/2011 13:30:22 Let's try it another way:
If you had the option to actually look at your avatar naked, covered in goo in your pod - would that suck or or would it make the whole game more realistic?
Another question (a bit more tame for you prudes out there):
If this is supposedly our universe to shape - why don't I have the option to not wear boots? I'm supposed to be a good but shoes are mandatory?

I dunno, try standing up in your workplace and asking the same question? Or is work also not for adults because it features clothing?
It seems most societies have a convention about public decency. If you have a problem with that convention, a sci-fi internet game is probably not the most effective venue to start a revolultion in that regard.
Originally by: Yarrrrrhh YOU'RE IN YOUR POD NAKED. OK? GET IT? NAKED. EITHER SHOW IT THAT WAY OR BREAK IMMERSION.
Would it make you feel better if "underwear" is renamed to "Particularly thick pieces of pod goo strategically congealed around various bodyparts to conform to societal norms of decency?"
Originally by: Yarrrrrhh Wow. I was assuming because they censor <something> that they'd also censor <something else>. Bigotry at it's finest.
Because an inconsistent word filter on old and feature-poor forum is a deliberate expression of bigotry rather than a simple technical shortcoming...
Originally by: Yarrrrrhh If they want grown up money then they better offer content for grown ups as well.
Last time I checked there is a considerable amount of content for grown ups that is entirely legitimate and relevant without requiring the use of the naked human form.
Or do you also shout at the TV for not being immersive enough because the characters in your favourite drama are never shown going to the toilet?
Originally by: Yarrrrrhh That's all I'm asking. I'm not delusional enough to think I can change your views on what's pretty and what is not. But give me at least a way so I can keep playing the game in a similar fashion as I've come to like it.
Hence the "Focus on Ship" option I proposed...the entire intention of which was to allow you to sit in your personal mechanical utopia chuntering about people who still insist on wearing clothes without ever having to view the overly-clothed representation of yourself that clearly aggravates you so much. ------- There is no magic Wand of Fixing, and it is not powered by forum whines. |

Funny, I was thinking that finally there will be some immersion now that I can leave the pod.
I'm all for CCP making this game into a sci-fi simulator, I just don't want it overheating my system, taking more time to load, or costing me more real money than I'm already paying.

It started when they stole our faces with the character creator. I never identified with the ship as me, I've always been the person sitting at my computer who at times became the pod pilot I was controlling.

I keep thinking that if CCP were serious about selling us a game feature like Incarna's WiS mechanic then they would have just licensed Blizzard's WoW technology and done it three years ago.
What they really want to do is stroke themselves and reinvent the wheel.
We could have had that already and with less graphics requirements and lag.
It's easy, rent the WoW engine. Change the graphics to a space station. Change the elves and dwarfs to Caldari and Minmatars. Let the chatting begin!

It would add exactly zero value to the game for me. In the same way that I am not bothered about films cutting from a scene of someone waking up under bedclothes straight to one of them leaving the house fully clothed - because while we all know they must have got up, got dressed, and yes, been naked at some point, seeing that adds nothing of entertainment value.
However, the reduced in-game population resulting from the consequent age rating issues would have a significant detrimental effect on my enjoyment of the game. Hence, I am against it.

What does not wearing boots add to the gameplay of Eve? You may as well ask why you can't put on sandals and a toga and parade around on a planet pretending to be a Roman.
Should you in theory be able to do so within the lore of the Eve universe? Yes. Is it possible for Eve the game to simulate everything that would be possible within the Eve universe? No. Is not being able to take off your boots going to ruin the gameplay of eve? No. ------- There is no magic Wand of Fixing, and it is not powered by forum whines. |

Because I enjoy walking bare feet in real life and my godlike avatar in this awesome space ship game is unable to accomplish such a simple thing?
It's just insane to offer players every way to customize their facial features and then FORCE THEM TO ALWAY WEAR BOOTS.

So what you are saying is that because Incarna doesn't simulate everything that is physically possible in the real world, that it should not attempt to simulate any of it?
Should we abandon the flying-in-space element of Eve as not immersive enough because we can't barrel-roll our ships?
Should we have abadnoned computer gaming as a bad idea back when we realised we couldn't do a McEnroe and smash our pong raquets over our knees?
You'd like it if you could go barefoot in your quarters, fine, its a feature request. I just don't see why it is a reason not to enjoy the things that your avatar can do. ------- There is no magic Wand of Fixing, and it is not powered by forum whines. |

Would just like to point out that there is something really impersonal about being a mass produced ship. When you look at yourself in a fleet there is nothing to distinguish you from all the other ships other unless you're the only one flying a merlin or some other ship in the fleet, but even that is limited by the knowldge that there os thousands of others out there. In the end, your ship is nothing more than that. A ship.

So did I, and I too, enjoy flaying CCP for the crap work of Incarna and how they've shattered the immersion of the game. Personally, I'd fire the b**tards who OK'd this expansion in its present form and delay it until it actually enhances the game experience, instead of detracting from it.

I love reading the EVE chronicles but it's kinda bugged me that apart from what I do with players I don't feel like i see much of that universe that I just have to be lucky that I get dealt a good hand for my own butterfly effect to happen.
Incarna (and future iterations that allow multi player stuff) will give me more of that feel that I'm a apart of the living breathing universe without waiting for some event to give the feeling for me. The main screen in CQ has done a world of good for me in that regard. I can see new items from the IC guys or I can see that some alliance has gain some sov, or an incursions has started and I can feel more now that things are always going on around me. That the universe is alive.

Originally by: Yarrrrrhh Edited by: Yarrrrrhh on 05/07/2011 11:07:27 It just dawned on me what CCP actually did with Incarna. Walking in stations and Captains Quarters mean the end of identifying with the player's spaceship.
Before Incarna our capsuleer self was nothing more than a picture in the top left of the screen that most veteran players just turned off to save space.
The ship was you. No matter which ship you were flying, YOU were the ship. No matter if you switched ships now and then, whatever ship you were in - T1 Frig or Black Ops Battleship, you identified with the ship, it was your body, its sensors your eyes, its weapon systems your hands and its microwarpdrive your legs.
But now, whenever we dock up in a station we get reminded that the ship is nothing more than a ship. We are forced to dress in whatever kinds of clothes and we are forced to stare at our more or less human selves.
If you were an immortal being given the power to control millions of tons of steel flying faster than light, able to travel the whole galaxy and explore the universe while shooting beams and missiles that can devastate cities - would you still care about what color your pants are?
Shame on you CCP for forgetting what EVE was about.
This is my Internet Spaceship. There are many like it, but this one is mine.
My Internet Spaceship is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life.
My Internet Spaceship, without me, is useless. Without my Internet Spaceship, I am useless. I must fire my Internet Spaceship's guns true. I must shoot straighter than my enemy who is trying to kill me. I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will...
My Internet Spaceship and myself know that what counts in this war is not the rounds we fire, the noise of our burst, nor the smoke we make. We know that it is the hits that count. We will hit...
My Internet Spaceship is human, even as I, because it is my life. Thus, I will learn it as a brother. I will learn its weaknesses, its strength, its parts, its accessories, its sights and its barrel. I will ever guard it against the ravages of weather and damage as I will ever guard my legs, my arms, my eyes and my heart against damage. I will keep my Internet Spaceship clean and ready. We will become part of each other. We will...
Before New Eden, I swear this creed. My Internet Spaceship and myself are the defenders of my Sovereignty. We are the masters of our enemy. We are the saviors of my life.
So be it, until victory is ours and there is no enemy, but peace!

Originally by: Yarrrrrhh A spaceship commander, just coming from a mission where he lost control over a solar system while his fleet was annihilated, what do you think he would do after his ship docked in station?
Right. Make sure his shirt and pants are all neat and tidy so he can check what's on TV.
Makes utter sense.
I guess I would take a hot shower, put on a bathrobe and drink some stiff spirtis from the minibar...
As I'm an immortal warrior I would then ponder how to beat my opponents next time, and how to get that territory back. Perhaps toast my opponents with my drink...
Or of course I could just land like a flap on the floor of my pod room, howl to the walls, then crawl back into the pod to immerse myself into the next iron coffin - if that's what you prefer...

That's weird, because all of my friends would rant about not having an "actual" character, aside from other things about EVE that are simply unattractive to your average Joe.
I also find it quite strange that you would identify with a piece of steel.
I mean, to put it in a bit of a different perspective... I didn't watch 2001 Space Odyssey because I found it easy to identify with a cold, computer killing machine.
I didn't watch Event Horizon because I, being the large, scientific marvel of machinery that I am, felt a great amount of connection to the Event Horizon.
And I don't play EVE to "be" a ship. I play EVE because I am a human being that likes to pretend to be in Space.
