I have a question about PI skills that i would like to ask here since it affects industry/profitability :
Training command center upgrades and interplanetary consolidation to lvl 5 is probably a good idea. I am not so sure about training advanced/advanced planetology beyond lvl 4 given that i do not scan from remote systems. Is there a use for these skills beyond initial surveying? Do they affect the placement of the extractors in any way?
Thanks for any advice

Remote Sensing is only useful if don't want to actually travel to the system you want to scan. If you can reach what you want then leave it alone.
(Advanced) Planetology does effect ECU placement in a manner of speaking. That being: If you can't find the hotspot, then you won't know to put your ECU there.
I'm not sure how much Planetolgy affects extraction yields. I'd have to level up an alt to test that.
I personally plan to train them to 5, but they're last on the list. CCU and IPC are both first in terms of level 5.

I am training advanced planetology to lvl 5. I believe this skill is the most important when it comes to locating extraction sites where you can get the maximum yield. I would rather have fewer planets early on but get the maximum amount I possibly can with your Adv. Planetology skills maxed out.

Well i can see these points, however:
Do the skills affect losses due to placing extraction points to close together? Are the readings acquired when moving an extractor back and forth affected by this accuracy? Is the amount of materials extracted affected by the skill? Is the rate at which the hot-spot is depleted affected?
I know these questions are difficult to answer without a large time investment but maybe somebody knows...

From what I gathered: No. Not sure what you mean, but it affects the readings you see. No, not directly. No.
And no one can say for sure, sadly, because PI is highly random and thus hard to "reproduce" some tests in
