If you are hunting ratters in low sec, would you rather use a curse or a pilgrim?
Pilgrims got the cloak, which means you can be sneaky, but your tank is less and no nuet range bonus. Curse on the other hand has a stronger tank, has a bous to nuet range so you can engage at range

TBH... "ganking" implies that you are looking to kill someone quickly and without much fuss. The problem with both ships is that they have bonuses geared towards grinding down the target.
As far as which to use... I'd probably go with the Pilgrim. Your target won't see you coming and, as you stated, you can sneak up to the target (which is a big deal because most [smart] low-sec mission runners are eying D-scan looking for probes and other threats) and lock them down before they have a chance to get away (which makes the lack of a neut range bonus kinda moot).
The problem with the Pilgrim is that once you have engaged, you are in it for the long haul. Your only means of doing damage comes from drones and the neuts and tracking disruptors only debilitate the target's ability to fight back. If said mission runner has back-up close by then you will be in for a world of hurt as you might not be able to kill your target before they arrive and lock YOU down.
The Curse is more of a "gang-oriented" boat... employing range to stay safe and GTFO when necessary. Many of the Curse fits I've come across utilize their mid-slots almost entirely to shield tanking, allowing them to move faster and "kite" targets. However, as with the Pilgrim, it relies on drones to do the majority of its damage... leaving you a bit vulnerable to ships with large amounts of HP. Coupled with the fact that it isn't cloaky, you may run into a few issues finding targets that are willing to stick around unless they think they can take you.
Both ships have somewhat narrow engagement profiles... being quite good against turret ships and/or ships that need capacitor to run their guns and/or tank. Against missile ships, ships using projectile weapons, and ships with passive/buffer tanks... not so much. _______________________

Pilgrim Pilgrim Pilgrim Pilgrim!
No one is going to fight the curse, at least not with only 1 or two people. With the cloak you can and will sneak up on people. Yes, your engagement profile is limited and you will have to start using your head (hard to catch frigs with the decloak wait timer unless you know what you are doing).
Nonetheless, lots of targets to find, the pilgrim has a sick tank (even against missile boats, this ship is though as nuts). In addition, find a way to scan mission runners and you will cream yourself. Pilgrim all the way baby! -------------------------------------------------

Well if it is between just those two I would say pilgrim as a curse on scan = dock up and hide.

As Shahfluffers say it,, depends on wether ur in a gang or solo. If in a gang,, i'd say Curse, handsdown,, if solo,, Pilgrim,, for the hit'n'run value in the ship,,

My reply is you want the Pilgrim but you need the Curse.
The Pilgrim is an Angler fish whose speed is but the heavy plummets' pace...
You setup shop a few belts ahead of your target or in the next anom and wait for it. Look for your pray to gather aggro from rats then uncloak and nail him.
So, get the Pilgrim as it also enjoy the luxury of revealing yourself when you damn well please. The Curse will get spotted a lightyear away and all you can kill will scram off while everything else will nail you.
Such as been my experience with these boats.

I'd use the Punisher, the ratters you will find in lowsec are going to be noobs that just got their first armor-shield-hulltanking cruiser with swiss army knife armament.

Curse with a cloak. Here's why:
1) No one wants to fight a curse even 3v1, hence the cloak. You still have BC level scan res so it's not a huge deal, the 15s sensor recalibration timer will vanish as you warp to your target, you won't be starting on grid.
2) If you're really going after belt ratters, they are week old toons in rainbow fit frigs/dessies/cruisers as already said. You could kill them with a t2 fit punisher. If you're using a recon, you're going for the bait ratters as well. You want the curse's kiting ability for that type of game as it will turn into 5-40 vs 1 within a minute or two. The curse can bail, the pilgrim can't typically. The curse can also kite that blob and pluck off the faster ships. Few things in game are more satisfying than fighting hopelessly outnumbered, killing a couple of them and warping off without a scratch. Hold the field in that scenario and you've won eve for the day.
3) I don't know how you arrived at the conclusion that a curse has more tank than a pilgrim. I've never seen a viable curse/pilgrim fit where the pilgrim had less tank than the curse. If you're experience is different, you're either a fitting genius or you're doing it wrong. My bet is on the latter.
All of this does not mean the curse is better than the pilgrim, I always keep both on hand. But the two ships are different. I find the pilgrim most effective for mission busting or attacking particularly skittish targets that I know in advance have no backup. The curse is a kitchen knife, the pilgrim is a scalpel. Use the right tool for the job.
