First off let me apologize for all these noob questions. This game is just drastically different than any I've played before. I'm the type of player who prefers PvP but likes to dabble in crafting a bit. Instead of crafting this game has mining, salvaging ect. So if I desire to do this in Eve will I be gimping myself buy training mining/salvaging ect and combat skills on the same character? Should I just create an alt for this? Can I even train two characters at the same time? Thanks again.

You can create 3 characters per account, but only one at a time can learn skills. Many players find it useful to have a second account, because it is more rewarding to focus on one part rather than being a jack of all trades.

That's a tad misleading. The big reason to split roles onto alts rather than one do-it-all character is the simple fact many things cannot be done at the same time. You cannot mine while hauling your ore to station. You cannot give yourself leadership bonuses. You cannot trade in more than one region at once. Etc.
A lot of those things you'll be able to live without, but depending on what you want long-term you will likely find at least one alt makes things infinitely easier. I'd never make it in my wormhole without alts and my pvp losses would be phenominally high if I never had a scout. Similarly, my main is -10sec, so without an alt to get into empire and buy things for me i'd have to grind sec status regularly or simply pay through my nose for things in lowsec/nullsec hubs.

There's a distinct difference between alts on same account and having multiple accounts, but forgetting about that there can certainly be a use for alts with different specialisations on your main/only account.
If your main is a pvper you could make a simple same account alt to haul stuff around, or do your your production stuff so while your main flies around the universe your alt just sits where he's needed. You could also make alts to do station trading with for some extra income, stuff like that. Location is an important factor in EVE, alts can help with that.

Edited by: Raid''En on 07/07/2011 12:57:37 when i was living on wormhole space i had on each account 1 char for w-space + 1 char for known space : it allowed me to be able to go where i wanted without having to probe each time an exit to have a look on high sec or such (or simply when stucked on w-space for a reason or another you can still play with the alt)

A lot of that is over my head as a new player :). I watched a couple of videos on "Ninja Salvaging" which looked highly profitable but shady. I can however equip a sing salvager on my mission ship and salvage my own wrecks to generate extra cash and items for myself can't I?

Absolutely, that is a great way to increase your rewards from Missions.

It depends.
Salvaging level 4 missions get you far more ISK/hour than doing L1 or L2 missions. In many cases if you do L4 missions not looting and salvaging and just blitzing missions for the kill bonus and mission rewards gets you more ISK/hour than coming back in a dedicated salvage ship and also do the salvaging and looting. Unless you fly a Marauder (T2 battleship) that can salvage while doing missions.
If you want to salvage there's no real need to "Ninja". Because of abovenentioned fact, a lot of mission runners don't loot and salvage at all and won't mind if you did it.

Generally you want to focus your character on one particular specialty, "master" it, and then move on to something else. Even then, you want to continue specializing the areas related to your "original" specialty.
This is the way it was explained to me when I started out;
If you "focus" your training, you will only be able to do one thing... but you'll be able to do it quite well. If you "split" your training, you will be able to do many things... but you'll not be able to do ANY of them well.
If you "specialize" your "focus" you will be still be able to do only one thing... but you'll be able to do it better than the majority of others. If you "spread" your "split" training you will be able to do many, many more things... but you still won't be able to do ANY of them well and instead run the risk of becoming a "weak link" in a group of people as you cannot perform properly. _______________________

But I can still salvage and run missions without hurting my progress right? Btw what's a good salvage ship for Caldari if I decide to give "Ninja Salvage" a try?

Splitting your efforts takes less time than focusing though.
So try multiple things in EvE by training the relevant skills to II or III (enough to get a taste of what that is all about), then decide what you like most, THEN focus by going up to IV and V for prerequisites. _______________________ The best thing in EvE is Barrage M. |

Oh also.... "Mission Runner" is the only suitable PvP career? I enjoy mining and exploring more than doing quests but I just don't see how that skill set could effectively PvP.

In any case if you want to be able to do both you either have to be extra patient or get an extra account. Missioning skills and PvP skills have a huge overlap while industry and mining will hardly benefit your combat skills.
If you decide to stay with 1 account I'd recommend is to get all the skills on one character. This is because you always have some basic skills that all professions use, like fitting skills (engineering, electronics), science, navigation and capacitor skills.
Btw mission running isn't the only combat oriented "profession". You can also do wormholes, scan down sites, do some ratting in low/nul sec systems to name a few alternatives. |
