Edited by: stoicfaux on 07/07/2011 16:49:16 Dev Blog is up.
CCP is setting up a site for player submitted cool things about Eve to fit in with their "Eve is real" slogan.
Quote:
Why should I help evil marketing folks?
Apart from the general internet fame you'll be rolling in, we are also offering incentives to entice you into sharing your favorite moments. A large chunk of EVE is about cost benefit afterall. We'll have community sharing goals that, when met, will unlock some Aurum for every single active player account. If you share even more, we'll unlock more. It's fairly simple. Click a few times, show us your cool **** and we'll show you the money.
I can't tell if this is pure genius or utter madness.
----- Request for Eve Development Roadmap. Let CSM know that we want one.

I personally believe that madness is a strong catalyst for brilliance. So, probably both.
Regardless, I think it's an interesting idea, and I look forward to its effects.

Notice that there is no way to directly exchange Aurum between characters. They will probably give us some piddly amount that is useless without also converting a PLEX to Aurum. Give us 900 AUR, and we would still need to spend a PLEX to buy anything. Give us 2300 AUR and the only thing that we could buy is Men's 'Precision' Boots. Even if they give us all enough to buy monocles, we still wouldn't receive anything that is as useful as the free ships they have given away in the past.

My thought exactly. I can live with the MT store for those that need it but trying to entice players and hoping a little bit of Aurum in our wallets will compel us to convert a plex to actually make use of this is a low move.
If the aurum could be converted back to isk I could ignore it. Now it looks like all my characters are going to have this taunting me every time I look at my wallet. ~~~

Don't you think that "community sharing" should happen naturally? Like, without the interference of your marketing department?
I used to tell friends about EVE and try to persuade them to try it out. I now feel less comfortable with that due to the introduction of Aurum, because I don't want to have to apologise to them later if you **** your game with microtransactions.
You want to give us Aurum to help advocate EVE? Give us real t-shirts or something instead and I'll consider it. It'll be cheaper for you..

Good marketing strategy
Give everyone Aurum but not enough to buy anything, then some people will be tempted to spend it and to do that they need to buy more.

Yeah... you really need to pay better attention before posting. Everyone else knows that there are other tiers of pricing coming, including lower tiers that will be less ridiculously priced. (I hesitate to use the word "cheaper" without actual context...) Odds favor that there will be things that can be purchased with the Aurum we'll get... I'd even wager on it. Hell, it makes perfect sense. Get people used to buying something from the store without having to pay initially. Some get hooked and start paying.
However you look at it... it really is a brilliant idea. The community works together to promote Eve, the community gets rewarded and feels good about doing it as a team, the Aurum store gets new customers and likely retains a percentage of them. I admit I'm looking forwards to seeing what this is about.

They'd better boost Gallente ships and implement contracts API instead of marketing gimmicks and "we have no plans" slogans.

So, when the community balked at the idea of copying DICE, they switched to copying Valve? Mehà ùùù ôWe want to try this thing called micro-transactions, but we don't know what it is. Can anyone explainà aw screw it, let's just do it! What could go wrong?ö ù ÇÇP |

I am well aware that more stuff will be added at lower price points. CCP has also said that they will be adding more free stuff too. We have already had free accessories added since the new character creation system was introduced a few months ago. Giving away Aurum and adding low cost items is little different than adding more free items. There will be so much supply of anything available within the price range offered by the free Aurum, that the market price for those goods would collapse to the point where it is hardly worth the effort to sell them.

It should also be noted that the inability to transfer Aurum is only temporary. They'll enable it later, when they're ready.

Eve is real...
... buggy? ... empty? ... hard on computer equipment? ... beta testing on a large scale?
From everything that the modern media has to say about marketing departments, I find it hilarious that they are getting props for this. Maybe they just need to get Christina Hendricks to be the spokesperson.
. I'm as mad as I can take it and I'm not going to hell anymore!
I have reassigned my money for CCP to other projects for the next 18 months... |
