Hi fellow capsuleers! Today is a sad day. As you may have noticed NASA has scheduled the last launch of a space shuttle for today. If the weather remains favorable the shuttle Atlantis will be launched at 11:26am EDT. The remaining shuttles Discovery and Endeavour had their last flights earlier this year. Unbelievably the space shuttle program comes to an end.
If you are in your mid thirties like I am, you probably can share my feelings when I tell you that I am in a state of deep sadness today. The shuttles were flying around basically my whole life. If you believe in science and progress and love science fiction like I do, you will understand why it feels like an immense loss.
Share your thoughts and feelings.

Sad to see the end of an era, like the retirement of Concorde without replacement. Is the launch available live anywhere? and what is EDT timezone? how does that relate to GMT?
But the shuttle was a bad compromise to beginwith, its not a spaceplane just a gliding return capsule. It achived some incredible feats in its lifetime but its time has come.
The sooner a proper spaceplane is developed the better, although it seems NASA is turning to private industry to build them another Apollo wannabe.
Check out the Skylon project for a proper spaceplane, this is well into development and recieving funding from ESA, they have however refused government funding to stay clear of the meddeling.
Seems we are relying on only Soyuz now to get people into orbit, (be that the Russian one or the very similar Chinese one) I think Soyuz predates the Shuttle and possibly is even an Apollo contempory, shows what a reliable workhorse it is.
Onwards and upwards to the next best thing :)

Edited by: Zan Loran on 08/07/2011 11:56:10 As usual you can get lifestreams at NASA's homepage. Sometimes the launch is available via NASA TV in Europe via satelite, in North America anyways.
EDT is Eastern Daylight Time, of course, as the launch site in Cap Canaveral, FL is on the east coast of the US.
The static timezone ET is UTC-5 but as daylight savings are current effective it is at UTC-4.
Iceland and the UK are at UTC. The rest of Europe mainly UTC+1. As Iceland does not employ daylight savings changes it stays at UTC where most of the rest of Europe is in UTC+2 during summer.
That's where the 2 hour difference between EVE Time and Central European Summer Time comes from. Makes it the typical 6 hour difference to the US east cost.
TL;DR 11:26 EDT is 17:26 CEST |

Not so much Insensitive, more knowing what I could and have the capacity to say is insensitive and thus I shall choose not to say anything [If it works for the governments ] |

I suggest you go blow up Adobe and all Flash developers. That crappy ustream site's Flash player crashed twice and nearly all Flash content has unhandled exceptions. |

Absolutely stunning launch. Sad to see the end of an era (without a viable replacement), but beautiful and flawless launch nonetheless. |

was a great launch.
News states there where around 1million at NASA to watch it. and that someone flew in from New Zealand to see the launch, must be a serious rocketry fan. |

Am I the only one who kinda, slightly, possibly wanted the Shuttle to explode again?

I didn't so much as want it to happen, but I wanted to bear witness to the reactions of others as it happened. |

You should be more worried about the DHS Fusion nerve centers than the FBI's program formerly known as carnivore. The FBI has a blue list too. ;) |

I used to live right next to the cape.
But in the end, it had to go. And government needs to get the hell out of the way and get out of the space business. Cold War is over and it's time to let the private sector do what it does best.
For those of you clovers who are experiencing the pre-conditioned response of "Private sector automatically equals women and minorities being exploited OH NOZE we need more socialism!!!1!", remember it was the private sector that brought computers from what they were in 1981 to what they are today, and the advancement in cell phones too.
So it's time for that bloated idiotic bureaucracy that can't start a war without lying about it and then can't win it to GTFO and let real smart people get started in space travel so we can start getting the hell out of here.

While I generally agree with this sentiment it's pretty difficult to find companies with a spare $XX billions lying around (per year) to dump into this sort of thing, especially when profits involving space travel would be years if not decades down the road. Government is still needed in some form, just probably not the way it's been needed in the past. |
