Had a great time in Eve last night. Scanned out a wormhole, peeked in the door and found a nice arkonor site.
In under 2 hours, was able to fill 2 cans with my Hulk, before my nerve broke and I got the hell outta there...
White-knuckle fun, and sure beats the boredom that is hi-sec.
But the $20 million profit margin was pretty disappointing. Risking a $250 million ship for those kind of numbers don't make sense.
Which reminds me, it is high time I make the jump to null sec.... |

I ninjaed 8 units of arkanor in a tormentor once. I guess it wasn't really ninjaing as I left my probe launcher back in the magnate. Before I podded myself I jettisonned the 8 arkanor and left my hull as a 'noob was here' sign. Nothing like learning the hard way. |

I agree it's fun and not profitable. some don't want to admit it but this is the exact reason why most suggestions to change mining fail in my estimation; they make mining more interesting and less profitable.

Certainly much more profitable to ninja gas. |

Your title should have said "Did some mining last night, wasn't very profitable."
I don't know what can be done but most of the issues from mining being so low in isk/hour is from zydrine prices, at least in 0.0. |

You're doing something seriously wrong. I can fill 4 cans in 2 hours in a Covie without breaking a sweat, which would be closer to 16-20M ISK/h. And you do it in a Covie, not a Hulk, nearly the same yield with an 18M ship. See how much better those margins are? |

As one of my corp's rare mining shlubs, I would like to comment on this.
Ninja mining in a wormhole can be very profitable - but you have to have your eye on the prize, and it isn't very profitable solo. In small gangs it could be much more profitable for you - like anything in EVE you get synergies from working with others.
What I suggest is you need 4 toons minimum. 3 run Covetors (as mentioned, a 18-24M ship) or Retrievers into the grav and cluster together. Feed ore into jetcans.
Toon #4 is in a cloaked industrial with cloak and tractor. Aim for 25km3 capacity, or one full jetcan. Sit cloaked within a quick stractor range of the jetcan, and when it's full, decloak, suck in the can, and boogie to hisec.
You should be able to learn wormhole dynamics effectively enough not to get trapped by a collapse (it gives you 4 hrs warning of EONL) and with 4 of you mashing d-scan, its unlikely you'll get combat probed. Remember you'll have a good chance of spotting probes before they work their way onto you (takes a minute or two) and can either logoffski or scuttle back to hisec.
As long as you keep the mining ships mining 100% of the time, you will get 75% of the ISK/hr efficiency of the ideal scenario when you pool resources. If you somehow get ganked, you've lost 20M. So in 1.5hrs you've paid your ship off.
Alternately, get your corp to join a wh alliance, and live in wormholes.

Welcome to EVE. Pretty sure you can't do anything in EVE without quickly going upside down on your shipvestments. |

A couple of points here:
First, on decloak, you'll have to wait 30 seconds even to target anything. Tough to say if it's worth sitting cloaked VERY close-in, use your method, or warp in from maybe 200 km off (have everybody clear away from the can when it's full if you do that).
Second, you won't have a minute or two if there are inhabitants with safes you can't d-scan, you'll have maybe 10 seconds to see the probes and ships WILL be inbound. D-scan can get a reasonable location for your ships, one scan to get a location, and the probe-ship sends buddies via wing-warp, probably (and follows at range for a likely second warp). You'll be sitting in space for a minute after you log, and the same probes will still get a location ... though it would be tough to nail more than one ship.
I won't say it's not worth it, but that's how fast things can go wrong...

I did this once or twice. it's interesting to mine with nailbiting terror the whole time.
two Sleeper... drones? something. two of those warped in at about 80km from where I was, and I was aligned and ready to go, but they never got any closer and never targeted me. I was able to fill up my hold and get out of there twice before I decided I was pushing my luck. |

Either you missed that part or I need to see your Crane fitting!

If you are gonna ninja mine with a small-gang, I would recommend spreading the miners out across the belt. That should mitigate the chances of you all dying in one horrific fire. Instead, only the guy who draws the short straw will die.
