I like the idea of training for stuff that makes my skillset somewhat unique. I'm very interested in molding myself into a (high SP) Black Ops pilot, as the concept sounds really fun and cool. But I'm not sure of the praticality of Black Ops ships these days in Eve. Do they have an active role? Are they wanted in PvP? I just dont want to turn my pilot into a highly rained waste. Is this something that would have a niche role to fill for a corp/alliance, or not so much? |

In my opinion, black ops gangs are the most fun someone can have in eve. However, it's hard to find an alliance that decent pilots to run the gangs with.
If you're going for carrier, it's worth training as its just a few extra skills. But if you're going subcaps, just train all races cruiser 5 and recons 5. Then you'll still be able to do black ops gangs effectively but you're not wasting skill time. |

By the way, I've run multiple black ops programs and whatnot. So, if you're looking for specific advice, hit me up in-game. |

If you're going to train for a blops BS, train a Cyno V/Recon V pilot as well. You're gonna need it.
Also, if it's not the Redeemer you're training to get into, don't even bother. It's the best one, hands down.

No. tl;dr
Everyone and their mother can fly a BLops. Basically anyone that can fly a carrier or dread can almost fly one <3 |

OK... so is there any ship class at all, that's BC size or smaller, that would fit into the "kinda rare but great to have - we want one in our PvP corp" category? I like filling specialized niche roles.

Thanks man. Any other suggestions from any other CEO's/FC's out there?? I'd love to stick with Amarr ships if possible (already high'ish Amarr-geared skills)

Black Ops are very effective, Brick Squad have used them to deal a great amount of pain, the problem is that the current black ops ship still needs a lot of work by CCP, it's hard to fit really well without ending up using faction or above modules. Although to be honest if you are paying that much for a battleship it's worth making it a pimp mobile.
A Black Ops on it's own, in my honest opinion is useless, best in a gang of 3 or 4 with recon ships.

blops are fun from what i gather. i've flown recons and bombers with blops gangs and its been fun.
the guys i know who fly them consider panther/redeemer top (think the panther is the preferred one because of speed) and then sins and widows have their uses.
corps/alliances that are proficient at using them arent all that common tho and it takes a bit of dedication to the art of the "cloak***"

Having Cyno V up to pop the covert cyno is rarer than being able to fly the ship due to the above referenced capital skill crossover.
BOPS and their support ships are in demand in niche pvp corps like Dirt Nap Squad and Noir. DNS in particular would be a good choice if you're just learning them. ---

The best Black Ops corp/alliance is Dirt Nap Squad. Hands down the absolute best and B/O is what they specialize in. Very friendly and helpful people.

Noirdot, now Velocity Prime approved :D
On topic, black ops are a very niche thing. If you are going to train caps anyway, then sure you may as well plug the book in. If you aren't, then probably don't.
If your corp does BOPS stuff, then you'll know if you want/need to train it, and there are not a great deal of uses for them outside of a corp op. Having said that neither of mine has ever seen live action, but I in no way regret training them. They were wonderful to move loot in and out of our little sov pocket when we still had it, and even now to help out with logitics here and there as needed. But then again, I have an alt with cyno 5.
Edit -
And an alt with a blockade runner ofc.

The Redeemer is the bomb for front-line DPS and buffer but honestly, most people that bang on about BlOPS have no idea about the different ways they are used. Sins aren't that bad on the battlefield but they make excellent mobile-repair stations too for example. Most people fall short by comparing them to regular Battleships, which if you are going to do that, you might as well just get involved with Titan hot-drops since they are a far more common activity, easier to skill for and much cheaper to participate in.
I only ever used the Panther once in an unexceptional engagement so I can't comment directly on it and I've never even so much as looked at the Caldari one in EFT. ~~~

To be honest, the only reason to care at all about the combat stats of them is if you are in a corp that is going to run BOPS-only gangs. In that case, you're in a corp that has a lot of BOPS and you know what you are going to do and how that fits into the gang.
Outside of that, there is no particular reason to pick any over the others. The redeemer gets the most cargo and so is the best bridger, but they will all get the job done.

the redeemer has the biggest cargo hold so its the best one? lol. come back to me when you are using blops gangs instead of just one or two for bridging things around.

Yup, I have a blast in my redeemer in lowsec. Never got around to actually taking part in the joint BOs roams with you guys (damn euro BOs roams!).
I mostly end up soloing in mine though, or small BO's gangs. Also used it to ninja tackle a providence + an anshar :D

I've been flying a Widow on the test server and the experiences I've had have been mostly positive. In a solo PvP fit I would confidently go 1v1 with any BS or BC. Surprisingly, its not very good against combat recons, especially the Rook and Lachesis. Though I think with some fitting changes it can compete. ECCM makes it far less effective. So stay away from stuff that is likely to be packing one.
For gang work, I think its better used for long-range support rather than toe-to-toe combat.
Would be nice if blops didn't get a scan res penalty from the cloaking device though. (Can be solved by giving them covert cloak.)
tbh, most groups I've flown with talk all about doing blops roams, etc. But usually its just a recon/bomber roam, or titan hotdrop. "The Lord loosed upon them his fierce anger All of his fury and rage missiles." - The Scriptures, Book II, Apocalypse 10:1 amended

Update on my previous statement. Have been using a shield gank Panther and it is bloody awesome. You can use it to do things the Redeemer has trouble with, namely get in, gank, GTFO without painful slow speed. The agility is incredible.
