I was excited to get this game started, my friend sent me the Buddy Invite and we thought we were good to go. I got into EvE fast, and started an Alt. I did the Buddy Invite with the Alt as well. Both my main and my alt were upgraded with $20 CD-Keys from Steam and later I added subscriptions to them through Account Management.
However, because I purchased these CD-Keys on Steam: I am completely unable to receive what I thought were my rightfully earned Buddy Invite rewards!? This is really frustrating, when I was adding the CD-Keys to my accounts shouldn't there have been a warning saying:
"You will be uneligible for your Buddy Invite rewards if you choose to use this key, please visit eveonline.com/store" etc. Or at least something along those lines?
I understand why CCP does this; all of the sales Steam and other retailers do make it unfair for CCP who I guess have no control over these Keys once they sell them to the retailer. I understand; BUT I PAID FULL PRICE!
I would appreciate this issue being resolved. I am not expecting to get my rewards because I should have read the fine print, I am just hoping CCP reads this and does something to warn people before they add "invalid" CD-Keys.
Thanks for your time.

On the buddy invite page, found at: https://secure.eveonline.com/Marketing/Buddy/ under terms and conditions it clearly states: "Payments not eligible for this offer: Direct Debit, CD Keys, including CD Keys purchased or received from non-CCP sources and online stores such as, but not limited to: Steam Store, Direct2Drive, Gamers Gate, Impulse Driven." --- ISD IonCharge Lt. I understand the fine print and wish I had read it earlier, but it is not enough in my opinion. I had NO idea it would matter where I bought the CD-Key, so long as I paid full price and from a legitimate retailer. - When I first started playing EvE I did not understand the level of technicality involved in the game. Now I know that this learning curve also applies to the way CCP runs much of their services. Had I known this I am sure I would have gone into the fine print to fully understand the 'complexity' of the system. I would classify it as a "noob" mistake; but let's be honest: who actually reads the fine print? Most people don't.
All I'm asking for is a warning message when you are adding an "invalid" CD-Key to an account which has rewards depending on it.

It isn't really fine print. It's there quite visibly. You messed up and are mad you don't get free service?

Edited by: Bicc Bum on 11/07/2011 04:21:49 By this point I know I messed up, I am not arguing that. However I would appreciate a logical reason why CCP does not honor CD-Keys from Steam, even when paid for in full price.
If it is because of the sales they do, then can I not E-Mail CCP my receipt? Or why is there not a system already in place to coordinate such a thing between Steam and CCP. Steam is revolutionizing the PC-Gaming industry, why would CCP not take part?
Regardless of the answer I am still going to play EvE, I'm not nerd-raging or angry at CCP; more curious. Not to mention I will now be buying a PLEX; 350mil is a lot for someone who has only been in the game for a month, I was depending on that Buddy Program to fund my PvP training. (I expect to lose a lot of ships!)

Didn't expect to see so many a-holes in a 'New Citizen Q/A'. Especially since I've been civil and simply want a productive conversation....
Do you also frequent the World of Warcraft forums? ZING!
(Ok that was a low blow I'll admit it)

If you want a serious answer from CCP, you should submit a petition, not write a thread on the forums.
But anyhow, I assume the issue is with steam sales and such. All of my alt accounts were purchased through steam and with the buddy system, but I guess they caught on.

The reason for not accepting steam keys was (iirc):
People abused the system when steam had a sale for 2.50$. So you could send 3 invites (which was the limit back then) to yourself and get 3 months of gametime for 7.50$.

Exactly this.
What if the whole playerbase did this? CCP would lose a buttload of money, the Steam sale is there so you can buy the game for whatever below-the-normal price is and then continue to pay with PLEX or a subscription.

Apparently, I may have done the same thing as OP. It hasn't been 24 hours yet, but I'm having doubts about whether or not my plex is coming. My problem is this: CCP clearly states that payments accepted for the buddy invite include ETC's: "Eligible subscription activations can be funded by Credit/Debit cards, WebMoney Transfer, paysafecard, ETC, PLEX, iDeal and PayPal. Payments not eligible for this offer: Direct Debit, CD Keys, including CD Keys purchased or received from non-CCP sources and online stores such as, but not limited to: Steam Store, Direct2Drive, Gamers Gate, Impulse Driven."
I read this very meticulously and was cautious to not screw it up. I had purchased a walmartcard (debit) for $20 to use, however after many fails I find out that the card cannot be used with any foreign merchants. Thus, I read my options clearly from EVE's above pasted passage, and decide to try use an ETC. Again on the EVE account management page it lists CLEARLY: ETC RESELLERS under the GAME TIME menu. I click their to see a the list of merchants, above which the following text is included:
ETC RESELLERS
Many of our players subscribe to EVE but we understand that some prefer to pay for their game time using other methods. EVE Time Codes are one of those methods and they can be bought through various websites. This page lists the official EVE Time Code resellers and links to their sites. Remember you can also trade ETC with other players or buy PLEX."
So long story, short, I chose EVECODES.com which is listed on the list of resellers CCP directs their customers to. They clearly list this item as: "1. ETC30 Eve Starter Kit 30 Days - 1 pcs."
Never once anywhere (I've been back and scoured the site thoroughly) was the word CD KEY ever used. I pay and receive it in email. Again it is clearly listed as an ETC. I enter it on EVE acct management site. The first this it says is: This is a CD KEY or You have entered a CD KEY. W
My bone is that CCP clearly tells one that ETC's are eligible for receiving the reward from the Buddy program.
CCP clearly directs one to: ETC RESELLERS. Again their apparently OFFICIAL reseller also lists the item as : 1. ETC30 Eve Starter Kit 30 Days - 1 pcs.
But, screw it if it doesn't work out. It ****ed me off mainly because of the way that dirty word "CD KEY" was avoided by all parties, until I activated it. It was too late by then. I almost think they would prefer that this happens to people, but who knows.

Eh. It does state "Not a time code!" and "New Account" on the image.
Image from Eve Codes.
If you went to Battleclinic Deep Space Supply It gives you a better description about the product. Or if you went to Shattered Crystal. Dang, Shattered Crystal went even further and stated "* Please Note: This item will NOT activate your Eve trial accounts into an activated account."
So, you should be upset with Eve Codes for not describing that particular product correctly.

Kinda off-topic....but I use a wal-mart money card all the time for my eve. I do it so i don't mess up any of my online stuff with our actual bill money. Unless your talking about an actual gift card, I don't see why you had this issue. -------------- (Insert whatever you want here) |

The funny thing is that CCP then introduced the PLEX for Buddy Invite thing, where you could spawn gametime out of thin air for zero monies.
Invite yourself >> Start a Buddy Acc >> Send a PLEX to the Buddy Acc >> Apply the PLEX to the Buddy Acc >> Receive a free PLEX on your main >> Repeat.

Are you really that stupid? First you say you read & understood the fine print, then you turn around straight away & say you had no idea.
Fine print is enough in any circumstance. If you can't accept this, you should probably refrain from doing any business with any company for the rest of your life.
