I know there are quite a bit of threads about NEX store, its prices etc, but I did not find answer to question "why was chosen this model"?
This thread is NOT about whether current state is right or wrong or if NEX is overpriced.
There are 2 possible way to introduce these items lore wise (and price wise): 1) You buy a "license" to use item offered by NEX store. This way the "item" is virtually indestructible as it is not inside your ship or pod. As the item is not destructible the price can be rather high. This is the model currently used in NEX store for clothes. The drawback is the finite market for those item. To produce revenue new items need to be introduced (as people stops buying old ones after some time - those who wants them already have them, other does not care).
2) You buy an item directly. But since you wear your clothes in every station you dock in you need to store such item in your pod directly (or it is your ship directly). The item is then in an risk of destruction upon podding. The prices of these items have to be very low so people dont mind risking them in fight. The drawback of this model is the rate at which the items are destroyed. Pod killing in high and low security space is rare and null sec pilots will probably not fly with NEX store items.
So my questions are: - What reasons were used for choosing strategy 1)? - Will it be used for all vanity items (such as hull paints)? - Is it possible that CCP decides to change the model in the future?

I've never had an answer to "Why are you asking the forums things that only CCP can know?"

Well if you look at what Hilmar said recently in review about DUST514 you might discover that logic they are using is extremely twisted:
"In the beginning you have to pre-buy credits, so you pay something like $10-$20 to enter the game and you get the equivalent number of credits in the game once you do that. We call this the 'cover charge'," CCP's CEO Hilmar Veigar PTtursson told GamesIndustry.biz.
"You're really getting the game for free but you have to pre-buy credits in the beginning. We might go fully free-to-play down the line, but in the beginning we have a cover charge just to manage the initial launch of it."
Sheer audacity of it is astounting.

The dev team was said to be working with 2 actual economists who told them how to not explode th e Plex market.
Of course the side effect was the entire gaming industry considers CCP an absolute joke from what ive heard from gamasutra and other insiders.
The bottom line however is, we will get the game we ask for. If people support the current model and its deemed effective by management it will stay as is. If the majority of customers reject it, it will change.
A publisher, board and management make decisions based on one thing only.
COST BENEFIT ANALYSIS.
If the net result is tons of capital is spent using art and dev time working on something people dont use, it was a poor decision and they will first try to market the store better using PR, advertising and media to get favorable reviews and if that doesnt net the desired result they will cancel or change the model.
Business is business. Eve is real...to Hilmar and people getting a paycheck based on it.
Eve is not real, and simple entertainment for players who have a vast vast landscape to spend our real money on.

I dont think this is twisted in any way. Just poorly worded. To rephrase it when the game launches it will be available for $10-$20. after the game is established, it might be free to download. Each starting character who paid for the game will start with appropriate amount of credits to compensate.
That is actually quite smart. At the beginning only EvE fans and people willing to pay initial fee are going to play. but later on to hook more poeple you either need to do free trial or free to play start. Dust will probably go free to play path.

You are absolutely right. That is what I would like to know, when was the model finalized (based on internal survey? Economic counsel? Just random try?). because from previous talks from CCP I had the feeling the NEX store is going to be model 2). (Granted those were not any definitive statements, but just general feeling)

Not really. He is saying you get game for free but you have to pay for access initially. It is a statement that does not work when you work through it logically.
He is trying to confuse by switching terms because unlike free to play games like say WoT there is no free option in the beginning. WoT had pre-order packages that had some gold + premium tank. It does not matter if they give ingame isk or not, GAME COSTS MONEY TO ACCESS INITIALLY AND HENCE IS NOT FREE!

Incarna and NeX store made for Japan consumers. My theory anyway, just think about the 1000$ japanese pants. Also instead of making a new thread in forums, theres the official one here:
http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1547792
which already got 16 pages. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- --
Until CCP fixes the game and give spaceships the LOVE they need. |
