Originally by: CCP Guard If you read the latest version of EON, CCP Sreegs advises the use of password manager software because we all have a lot of passwords to remember these days.
I must say this is one of the worst suggestions to give. The first target of any virus meant to steal your information are password managers, address books, internet browsers, instant-messaging clients, anything that will store your password or login information in any way. (An encrypted database file can easily be uploaded to the hacker's server to brute-force crack later.)
If you absolutely cannot remember your password, the best medium is old-fashioned paper, stored in a locked safe, at least that way you can file a police report if it is stolen.
Without speaking for CCP Sreegs, I understood his point in the way that it's better to use password manager software than using the same password everywhere because you don't want to have to remember a bunch of passwords, or have problems remembering them. Because that's by far the biggest opening you can leave for evildoers. There are other risks of course, but re-used log in combos seem to be the biggest cause of trouble for our players and the big money maker for the haxors.
But personally I would like notes that explode after being read like in Mission Impossible.
Yes and no. The flaw with that logic is that you still risk sensitive information using password managers, should your computer be compromised, and in that case it would be more prudent to separate forum access from access to your account (ie. playing EVE)
There are more things that really should be implemented on the account management of things like a recommendation to change password every month with a warning if you just put the same password again, helpful tips like use different email accounts for the game and forum access, different user names and passwords and the list goes on and on.
Personally I wouldn't take CCP Sreegs advice to heart because I find his qualifications questionable at best, laughable at worst.
