Yes not everyone will benefit if they dont have a iPhone or Android phone, but it is a big step in the right direction.
We're working on all that cool stuff
Not all things will directly benefit all people but any solution that can minimize the number of potential victims leaves more time for our people to deal with each case.

Thank you CCP gaurd. No sarcasm.
A lot of CCP's troubles on these forums would be neutralized with far less drama by some quicker responses from people such as yourself. Left to our own devices we stew and fester and conspiracy theories snowball. Promt response = best response.
Especially since we know you read the forums, and pretty sharply.
Once again thank you Gaurd, I shall now return to this thread....

And today my account is returned to me, I don't know if it was this post or the second petition that did it but I'm glad as I really do enjoy this game. I did originally post this thread as a wall of text and so would like to thank the responders who gave me constructive criticism. Well, I'm off to run a virus scan and then log in to check the damage. CCP my advice to you is to include the average issue resolution time in the form response that you use when initially responding to petitions.

Oh, to Nocturnalist, try filing a second petition, the GM that fixed the issue for me was the one that received my second petition, they gave me 20 days game time and the isk that my stuff was sold for. no skill time but I only lost a day so np, if I had lost more I might petition but a day isn't bad.
I really do think that this happened to me because I was lazy and used the same password with battleclinic, but I doubt I will ever know for sure.
Whew, run on sentences and WOT, my old English teachers would fail me.

This is why I have a unique passcode to all of my accounts. No two of my accounts have the same password. Even then, I regularly change my passwords (sometimes making them longer than 16 characters), especially since the last DDoS attack that Lulzsec committed.
@ Innocent Accomplice - I don't know where you heard your news, but Lulzsec never succeeded in hacking into CCP's account database. They couldn't because CCP decided to respond quickly by shutting everything down (including the database) and disconnecting them from the internet until an investigation was finished. Since you mentioned that you used the same account information on Battleclinic, and since Lulzsec did successfully hack Battleclinic, then by process of elimination we can assume that your account information was acquired from Battleclinic and thus your Eve Online account was compromised.
Oh, here is a little tip. I don't know if you do or not, but if you have a Google Gmail account and a cell phone try enabling the extra security feature that requires you to enter a randomized number generated for you via a cellphone text every time to you enter your usual passcode. It becomes more inconvenient for you, but it makes it more inconvenient for the hackers since they will then have to steal your phone to get it. I have this feature enabled all the time for me and so far it's working just fine.

So what happens if someone gets a hold of your account takes all your stuff. But then sells it for WAY less than it is to buy the items again. Are u just SOL? Just wondering cause this is what happened to me. I lost about 8 battleships a fully fitted Golem (worth about 10ish billion) all my t2 modules, and i have 2 billion sitting in my wallet with a email saying that the money has been sent to me from what was sold... I tried to petition them to refund all transactions so i get my items back and everyone gets their money but CCP said that the economy is such a "unique" design that they can not interfere with it and that they will not spawn any items. I don't want new items i want my old ones back to me and the money to be returned to whoever bought them.

I advise against doing this. Filing multiple petitions will not get a case on the table quicker. Every petition is handled in the order they are filed. Thus we will get to your first petition before we ever see your second petition. The only result that filing a second petition has is create more work for the GM picking it up, but it will not speed up the resolution of your case (in fact, all duplicate petitions will always be immediately closed as soon as a GM spots one).

I was right, they locked the account right after they saw my petition. They managed to recover 1 billion in isk for me and I figure I lost another billion through undervalued transactions, not really worried about that since I can mission that in a day or two.
I do seem to have lost about 4 days from my skill training. I don't think they take implants into account when resetting the account, have filed a new petition for that so I will see how that goes. Most of the stuff I train right now is going from lvl 4 to 5 so if they say no even that is not a real big loss.
The interesting thing is that my wallet transactions show him moving over 5 billion through my account so he seems to have gotten another player worse then me.

Originally by: Innocent Accomplice Edited by: Innocent Accomplice on 12/07/2011 06:03:07 Without a doubt CCP has the worst customer service I have ever encountered. One week ago my account was hacked. Initially their response was great, a GM contacted me within minutes relaying to me the information that they needed to return control to me. Awesome, I thought, they are on top of this, the world is rosy, somebody is there and they will help me. I now know how naive I was, a full week has now gone by and still nothing. My training queue is empty and the account is actually out of game time, and I am becoming irate. Now I know what you're thinking, that this was my fault, either my password was too weak or I downloaded something that I shouldn't have, maybe my home network is insecure. The problem may have been the password, I did use it with battleclinic since this being just a game I didn't want to try to remember too many passwords, I'm pretty sure that the problem was not my computer or network since the only problem I have had is with this one account in this one game.
However, even if was my fault it is no excuse for CCP taking over a week to respond to a customers problem. Also, I can't help but to think that maybe I should have changed my password after Lulzsec attacked CCP, they did claim that they were successful in gaining access to CCP's user name and password database, who knows, maybe the Lulzsec hackers have finally gotten around to my account. It makes me wish I had not taken CCP's word that their database was secure and had gotten around to changing the password on this account like I did with the account I am posting this with, but in the end, for me, this is just a game and at the time was eclipsed by the other stuff in my life that actually matters.
If they have some security reason for making me wait this long I could have accepted that, as long as someone had taken the time to inform me of it, or they had included that info in the initial response. This account will be running out of time in a couple of days, if it does before I have a satisfactory response from CCP I will not be renewing and CCP can say goodbye to 2 accounts. That may be just a drop in the bucket, but it does add up, too bad really since all they had to do was respond.
And no, you can not have my stuff.

I found out about the Lulzsec attack when one of my friends who works in internet security forwarded me the post made by Lulzsec (which I did not save) where they claimed to have gained access to CCP's database.
The point of a DDoS attack can be to keep a networks administrators busy while another more serious attack is under way.
The only reason Lulzsec did not gain access to CCP's database was because CCP realized something more serious may have been occuring and crashed their own network, which they have incorrectly received tons of grief over, probably from you along with other people.
I know it's hard for you but please try to refrain from making any more ignorant posts.

Although it is too late to help you, maybe more people will read this and pay attention:
1) Download the program "KeePass" 2) Learn to understand the level of complexity that CCP gives you for passwords.
Hint: 64 characters, with high-bit (most, based on my testing) characters allowed.
A password containing 64 characters with ~50% of it being unreproducible by a US keyboard.... is just awesome.
Also, as Guard previously mentioned... DO NOT REUSE PASSWORDS. Step 1 will help you solve that simple problem.
In fact, not only do I use the password generator to create my passwords, but where appropriate I use it to create my login name.
Good luck.

Originally by: CCP Guard Hey everyone,
I thought I'd use this opportunity to share some information about our anti-account hacking efforts and principles.
We believe that the most common cause of account security problems is when people use the same password/username combo on other less secure sites. We put great effort into securing data on our end but that's of little use if there are other softer targets out there where the same information can be obtained. Corporation forums are particularly juicy prey to serial hackers who then probably sell the information wholesale to RMT organizations or use it themselves to liquidate assets and re-sell the in-game profits to other EVE players.
We're working on ways to make it even easier for people to secure their log in data, such as the FOB keys distributed at Fanfest (no solid ETA on them yet), but the easiest way by far is to use a unique log in combo for EVE. If you read the latest version of EON, CCP Sreegs advises the use of password manager software because we all have a lot of passwords to remember these days.
Finally, the reply time to these petitions can be a little longer than average because unfortunately, vulnerable accounts seem to be plentiful, and each of these cases takes quite a bit of expertise and time to investigate and resolve. We've made great strides in the last two years when it comes to detecting intrusion and preventing damage from being done and that will always be our priority. Then it will probably always take a little longer to investigate the case, secure the account again and let the rightful account holder in.
We do put emphasis on contacting people and letting them know what's happening, but occasionally the hackers have gained control of people's E-mail addresses as well and that's typically when communication tends to break down.
We know it sucks to be shut out from your account for a week and sometimes even longer, but given that an account has been compromised, the feedback we've gotten is that this is much preferred to a ruined or semi-ruined estate. EVE is after all a long term experience and what you've taken time to build is more important than temporary inconvenience as I'm sure you'll agree.
-CCP Guard
blah blah blah...get the man's account back. I swear the petition process is sooooooo slow. It's ridicules. My alliance m8s and I always joke about someone's misfortune when they submit a petition because we all know it takes a friggin 2 weeks to get some pre-fabricated answer back. Why does it take so long? How many people are actually assigned to the petition system? My guess is two people who work 5 days a week, that take 2 lunches a day, 8 smoke breaks, and 10 bathroom breaks during an 8 hour shift. Because if my calculations are correct, that would equal the 2 week response we have been getting?

I must say this is one of the worst suggestions to give. The first target of any virus meant to steal your information are password managers, address books, internet browsers, instant-messaging clients, anything that will store your password or login information in any way. (An encrypted database file can easily be uploaded to the hacker's server to brute-force crack later.)
If you absolutely cannot remember your password, the best medium is old-fashioned paper, stored in a locked safe, at least that way you can file a police report if it is stolen.

Without speaking for CCP Sreegs, I understood his point in the way that it's better to use password manager software than using the same password everywhere because you don't want to have to remember a bunch of passwords, or have problems remembering them. Because that's by far the biggest opening you can leave for evildoers. There are other risks of course, but re-used log in combos seem to be the biggest cause of trouble for our players and the big money maker for the haxors.
But personally I would like notes that explode after being read like in Mission Impossible.

Yes and no. The flaw with that logic is that you still risk sensitive information using password managers, should your computer be compromised, and in that case it would be more prudent to separate forum access from access to your account (ie. playing EVE)
There are more things that really should be implemented on the account management of things like a recommendation to change password every month with a warning if you just put the same password again, helpful tips like use different email accounts for the game and forum access, different user names and passwords and the list goes on and on.
Personally I wouldn't take CCP Sreegs advice to heart because I find his qualifications questionable at best, laughable at worst.

How about use a similar (very good!) password root for each service WITH A SITE SPECIFIC APPENDIX!
Really simple to do, use "P4$$w-rDeveonline" for EVE, "P4$$w-rDbattleclinic" for battleclinic, "P4$$w-rDgoogle" for Google etc.
- Just need to remember the root, and one word for each site, so no need to store on paper or hard disk - Hard to crack since longer than normal passwords - Unique for each site so copying the hashed value is pointless - Captured clear text one from one site still requires a human brain to adapt it for another site
If you're a bit clever about how to modify for site dependency, they might not even catch on. For instance, you could scatter the site specific stuff: "gP4$o$w-orDgLE" "eP4$v$w-erDoNLIN" "bP4$a$w-trDtLECL"
To OP: Hope it'll work out well for you. An alliance mate got all his stuff reprocessed and sold (partly to my own buy orders *facepalm*) and he was only returned the ISK, which never made up for any faction stuff.
