Heya All, trying to ditch windows alltogether. Having a long hard think recently I realised that im only keeping winblows on the pc for eve really, everything else I can do in ubuntu 11.04.
Being a bit of a ubuntu noob, altho I can work my way round terminal and basic commands (I can follow instructions) Im wondering whether the cost of Crossover which supposedly comes with all the setting tweaks and gets updated for future versions is worth it?
i.e. is crossover going to save me a couple of hours work anytime a new patch comes out (giving the developers a couple of days chance to do the updates :) )
Whats peoples experience of crossover please, also anyone know if its a one off payment or yearly subscription?
Thanks folks

Installing via WineTricks in current (1.3.23 last i used for it) does pretty much everything that crossover will do. It downloads an old client full install and patches up to current with no issues. The problems with incarna and framerate under linux are another problem altogether though :( __________________________________________________

Cheers for your reply :) I have winetricks and playonlinux installed but not had a go with winetricks yet, so i'll be firing that up in a bit.
Interesting that it does the patches and you dont have to do that manually, sounds great.
With regard to the framerate issues, I can tell ya that its no where near as bad as windows. In windows I have no memory left, 1.3gb paging file and all settings to low with shadows off I get a whopping 6fps in stations.
Through crossover I had 2.7gb ram available 0 swapfile and around 20fps (just guessing as I hit ctrl-f and it crashed) but I can see the videos playing ok in the silly monitor in the CQ, just gotta sort out the visual tearing next. I guessing its driver plus settings im using, but i'll get there :)

Shame we cant have a poll on here or a sticky to show users experience using the different packages that use wine and their eve experience.
Has anyone tried to use all 3 to see whats the better package?
Any others want to chime in and say what they use / used and their eve experience?

Some friends of mine swear by crossover. They are lazy.
I couldn't find any performance improvements over wine. It's just easier to install, tweak and use.
e.g.
With wine you have to install the game manually, then add registry-keys, then add dlls (winetricks or manually) change settings in winecfg.
With CO you just click on your game and point it to the disk/installer file which it even downloads alone for some games. Then it sets the prefix (called bottle) adds dll files changes the settings and so on.
In the end, there was no difference in the result, just the amount of work required to get there.

Tbh I've found that the registry settings listed in the older posts arent needed at all anymore. Oh and glad you're getting decent fps, under windows I get 50-60fps in space and 15ish in cq. Same machine under wine (with/without registry edits) same in cq but loose 30fps on average in space :( __________________________________________________

My experiences so far are mixed with Wine and Eve. I've been able to install and play properly with only a minor framerate loss compared to windows (haven't tried much space with big/heavy traffic yet). The only issue I'm having now is Wine takes upwards of 5 minutes to load up. I think the problem is the Fonts folder I installed on my windows simulated disk, i think it's eating up wine's memory and then my swap too =X
Anyway, I'll probably reduce that font folder to the main MS font that EVE needs (Arial?)
