A solid content-patch, decently advertised, would probably kick start things. A real bounty system, perhaps. If the Dust 514/Eve interface works that will also do great things for both games. (Though I'm not a shooter affectionado and wouldn't buy a PS3.)

More like EVE online is being targeted by a CCP-Devteam Gold Scorpion, and shot with a CCP-Modified Remote Community Relationship Repairer which has a 75% of damaging it's target instead of repping it.

Whenever I'm in a noob system lately, I'm astounded...ASTOUNDED...by the number of new players in system.
CCP might as well have paid a bunch of employees to 'protest' as it did more for new player interest than any ad campaign could have. Splashy video pasted all over the internet gaming and mainstream sites. YouTube comments full of "wow this game looks great" and "can you really do that? Gonna have to try it out".
Bittervets out. New enthusiastic people in.
Sounds like win/win to me.
I look forward to what the future holds for EVE Online.

I've played numerous MMO's for many years now and one thing that is a constant in them all was/is the prophets of doom who herald the death of the game they "love". Is this game dead? I guess we'll know for sure when no one can log on to the server anymore and no, I've no ****ing clue when that will be. Another constant seems to be the "division" that forms between those who hate a feature added to the game vs those who have no problem with it and just keep playing. The scorned players will always hit the forums to openly protest such changes and announce theirs and many others exodus from game. Usually those having no issues with any feature of the game aren't as open and rarely say anything one way or another, they just continue to play the game and enjoy their time spent.
It has been suggested that there's a decline in the server population and much speculation as to why. Some in this thread have pointed out a decline due to the season. I can relate to that myself as I'm generally less active in the late spring through late fall months. I know of some others in game who've also left for similar reasons, so it makes sense to me. Some are saying the old timers have left/are leaving, for whatever reasons (e.g. CCP are money grubbing scum, players are butthurt they can't afford $10k scorpions, etc, etc) and the current player base are a much newer player base.
So what if there's no players left who have not been around since the game's launch date? So what if some of the game's cry babies aren't going to be given their bottle? From my personal experience, the reasons players will leave can vary from game to game but, bottom line, this has happened in every game I've played over the years in some similar form.
Lets face it people, this game has been around for 8 years not including any time before actual launch. That's a long, long time in terms of MMO life. Even the most dedicated and stalwart veterans are bound to seek out something new to stimulate them eventually. I also personally believe that a lot of us MMO gamer types have ADD and have to leave to seek out something new.
Personally, if you really do enjoy this game and want to see more replacement players to those who have left, I like this suggestion the most:

Seem's like it, now as Eve Online players we need to hit the net and start recruiting new players.
start some epic battles, youtube em and the whole 9!
I do believe it's been tried in other games and no I don't haz any proof :P It's hard to do though, I've tried and am continuing to try to lure the people I know in RL to come play with me and have had 0 success. My RL friends do not share the same nerdy passion for sci-fi that I do. Maybe others reading this will have better luck with their friends? It certainly can't hurt to try and is better than doing nothing or reading all the negativity and following along with it.

I am surprised that anyone can think that the number of players online in EVE at any given time can be directly attributed to the current state of subscriptions or PLEX sales.
Numbers of folks online has nothing to do with CCP's income.
I have read that they have more subscribers now than ever before.
Do ya'll not ever read the QEN reports??

No, there is no newer "hard data" regarding sub counts. But as you can see from the graphs above, you can make a fairly accurate estimate of total actual subscriber counts by looking at the daily online averages.

Precisely!
Short of banning Russia in its entirety (which I wouldn't mind at all), I say it's time these people are moved to their own server, separate from the main EVE server, where they can bot, and RMT, and buy supercaps with their illegally obtained ISK amongst themselves to their hearts content.
Nothing has ever broken EVE gameplay so much as the Russians; and yes, that includes fear of seeing 'gold ammo' introduced.

P.S. This is a graph merge and align attempt. Note that the QEN line is a 30-day moving average, while the eve-offline graph is actual online count, so there is a noticeable delay between them, and some extra averaging. http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/9757/evesubsvsonlinemerged.png

Oh please, the large non-russian alliances RMT just as much. And we, the players, voted for RMT in the recent CSM elections.

An interesting thing that becomes obvious from the above merger is that people used to spend slightly longer time online on average for most of the time before the summer of 2009 (short while after release of Apocrypha), with a brief drop between spring and autumn 2008 before then (between the release of the new Trinity graphics engine and the release of Quantum Rise, all around Empyrean Age).
Another interesting thing is that those that do contribute to the early "spikes" of online counts near expansions are not mostly new players, but rather the majority being older subscribers that just stay online longer OR maybe trial accounts that do not turn into subscribers.
Take that, "shiny new sells, old polish doesn't" !!!
Hey! I apparently stand corrected. Thanks for taking the time to do these graphs.
Interesting stuff, indeed.

Edited by: Tippia on 15/07/2011 04:44:06 àit's also important to note that there is exactly one instance of summer numbers showing a consistent dip in the old ever-increasing accounts trend: 2009, when unholy rage nuked a couple of thousand bots.
So really, that's not a summer decrease ù it's a "we adjust the curve x thousand accounts downward". If you take that into account, the summer of 2009 also showed the normal bump in players that had more free time to spend in the game. And that was without a patch to bring the players (back) in, since Apocrypha was released early. ùùù ôWe want to try this thing called micro-transactions, but we don't know what it is. Hmm, good point. Then the decrease in average online time from that point onward could probably be attributed to ongoing bot-nuking... which would actually be indicating that CCP actually IS doing something that has a noticeable effect on the bot population... Let me try to rework that graph with a guesstimated 3k nuked bots on average since the summer of 2009... just a moment
P.S. I wonder, what caused the average online time per subscriber to dip in the time between Trinity, EmpAge and QR ?

Hmmà wasn't that at the height of the "socket lost" bonanza? Or was that later? Added expansion limits for convenience.
Rev1,2 are the two phases of the Revelations expansion. "SI1,2,3" are the three phases of (Sansha) Incursion deployment. "CQ" is the first phase of "Incarna" (Captain's Quarters). Rest should be obvious. http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/8852/evesubsvsonlinemergedun.png

0.0 is dieing because CCP made supercaps solo pwnmobiles, because ships that were meant to be rare are now fighting in blobs of 100. When you see 150 supers attack your space, you won't try to beat it because it's like banging your head against the wall unless you can field 200 supers of your own. And yes, DRF RMT friends will continue to expand because 1) supercap blobs are unbeatable atm and 2) we treat game as game or hobby, for many of them it's source of living; you go to office to work, they log on to Eve. Actually, I pity them as they are quite pathetic.

BoB at the height of their power, t20, boot.ini and everything nano'd to hell and back might be a start? Also ISTR the server was extremely unstable for a while around then.
I know a load of people I knew quit around 2007/2008 - a fair few came back for QR and stuck around for Apocrypha but they're more or less all gone now. Three lacklustre expansions in a row will do that.

I've played this game for a very long time and it's attraction was Internet Space Ships.
Apart from a few individual ships, I haven't seen any new ship classes or generally any serious development for Internet Space Ships for a very long time.
Neither have I seen the polishing of new features which do work, but annoyingly don't quite work right and new content rapidly becomes old content with many annoyances.
However, now I see that most of the development time is now being spent to attract a different class of player to what Eve first had and the disappointment in the game is simply tolerated by CCP. I know it's hard to pick out the disappointed from the trolls on here, more so when you are a multi national company and lots of translation is involved, but then Eve would not be Eve if it was not cold, dark and harsh,
In a workforce, unchecked Disappointment becomes Apathy and a decline in productivity, Apathy then leads to either Anger at not being treated "right" or Staff Leaving. The Angry people then stay around and make the workplace an unpleasant environment leading to others Disappointment and the cycle continues.
Disappointment kills companies, disappointment kills games.
I got fed up of the clock ticking so now I'm now playing other games, waiting for the a return to the focus on Internet Space Ships.
I hope it comes soon......

Activity is dipping
So is consumer spending in the major economies. Do you think there might be a connection?
Not really. Even in the direst cryses 1st / 2nd world people keep reserving some money for entertrainment.
I can't speak for the others but while CCP lost 5 subs of mine, my older MMO kept its 3 and I switched to another with 2 subs.
It's a market, dude. If they sell sh!t, they lose revenue. Maybe not drastically but if the customer base is deluded then they get hit, as it should be.

Eve isn't dying. The glare from the exhaust ports of your friends ships as they try to burn away from an ambush coupled with the screams on comms is real enough for proof of life. Eve is alive and well, I can vouch for that.

Also looking at the eveger.de graphs, if the current trend persists, we might be swinging on 2007-2008 'activity' levels soon. Or is the 'slope dip tip' on the graph just a graphical anomaly?
Anyhow, a daring broker might just have gone in short by now! Still no shame in interpreting this as a part of an 'overall positive, with a dip'. Though, it would be fair to say that current perceptions and actions are having enough influence on the trend to make assumptions based on historical extrapolations rather difficult by now.
