Edited by: kerradeph on 24/07/2011 06:13:04 of the free defrag tools I have used I find auslogics disk defrag the best. aside from that I have used my defrag, it's a good tool with some nice scheduling tools but it does not give much useful feedback on what it's doing so I moved over. I run it when needed, not on a schedule or anything like that, I check once a week or more frequently if I have been doing a lot of downloading or moving of files.
mind you i just moved to an SSD, so my defrag habits will likely change. it should also be noted that I try to delay my defrag as much as possible since aside from my new SSD all my HDDs are 1TB and almost full.

Originally by: Lady Spank Using o&o defrag my harddisk is apparently 17% defragmented (has been for ages) but it absolutely refuses to actually defragment the drive.
I've tried another defrag program and get the same problem.
Anyone know what is going on?
I have about 4gb of space on my harddrive so it should have enough room to move things about surely?
That could actually be the windows swap file that is fragmented or system files that are in use, some defrag programs let you defragment those at boot up, one other thing you could try is removing the windows swap file then running a defrag. Then setup the swap file to a fixed size so that it does not become fragmented.
One other thing you could do is delete old system restore points. |

IT technician here. Just wanted to add my 2 cents that file system corruption DOES occur even without system crashes. Usually they will happen first, in fact, causing the system crash (BSOD or otherwise), although not always right away.
And to the dude that defended Microsoft because it uses NTFS ... I'm using NTFS on one of my Linux partition. I just want to clear this up as I see arguments forming tying NTFS-->Windows and (Other File Systems)-->(Other OSes)

I cleared out some more space and managed to defrag a good chunk of whats on the drive. The movie files wouldn't behave but I don't care about them so much.
Thanks for the responses ♥ ~~~
