Edited by: Dragonslayer Anstian on 18/07/2011 11:53:19 After loosing a cnr and a raven because of random afk needs due to kids, i have decided to train for some other boat for level 4 missions.
So i guess what is the next best mission ship that is cap stable and still fast and efficient ?
tengu ? nighthawk ? rattler ? dominix ?

Scorpion Navy Issue is essentially a Raven with more midslots.
If you do want to train for something, then I'd recommend a Tengu if you have the ISK.

Erm... no, I think you mean the Rattlesnake.
I recommended the Navy Scorpion, as it can have a decent tank, and doesn't require any additional training, unlike the Rattlesnake.

Tengu is a really bad idea if you need to go AFK. One or two webber frig and it's bye-byeà
Plus you can't continue killing rats whithout pushing some buttons :P
Best for AFK-missions is Dominix with dual LAR or Rattlesnake.

The Rattlesnake is a superb mission boat, for a couple reasons, especially in your case.
1. It can be fit with an excellent passive shield tank against everything but EM, and you did ask for a non-active tank.
2. It is a drone boat, which allows for some semi-afk missioning, as the drones will kill all attackers when drones are set to aggressive mode. This becomes a real issue though when they trigger new spawns and you are afk. Bye bye drones.
There is a third option, which all though a tad more extreme, is the most effective. I would suggest selling the kids off for medical experiments. What is more important, Eve or little monsters that cause you to lose ships?
Always remember, Eve is real.

Tengu is amazing tank wise. Plus you have great dps and speed. Pick an out of the way mission agent and have at it.

Permatanks 558 dps + 790 kinetic dps. If you want your tank to be even more insane you can splurge for the a-type booster, another amp instead of the ab, and crystals. That bumps you up to 1286 dps versus sansha and other insane numbers versus everything else. (2500 guristas etc..)
Point being you can go afk for hours and be fine.

A 5xHML Tengu has the same firepower as a Raven. So if you can fit a Capacitor Regeneration Matrix to your Tengu if you need to perma-tank. 800 tank versus em/therm.
You can swap in a LSB II in place of the Pith if you use 3xCCC rigs and maybe a CPU module in place of the DC. 777 tank versus em/therm.

Tengu isn't even funny as a troll guys. OP wants to go AFK in an emergency. Discerning pilots dock tengus, not AFK them.
W/O a doubt you want a RS or SNI as they both provide a passive tank that can tank the whole mission if need be while you are AFK.
Unfortunately you cant set them up with uber DPS and uber tank at the same time, but you dont have to be set up to tank 2k incoming DPS just to go AFK for one leg of a mission.

Edited by: SirusDeVirus on 18/07/2011 17:41:03 I don't know why these guys are offering expensive ships as AFK'rs. Try the Drake out. Sure it requires some planning (gotta know the triggers) but done propperly it can perma tank 600 Omni DPS with TII fit.
[Drake, AFK]
7x Heavy Missile Launcher II (Scourge Fury Heavy Missile)
2x Large Shield Extender II 2x Invulnerability Field II Photon Scattering Field II 10MN Afterburner II

only 400 DPS tank, but 500 DPS out. It can't run AB and be cap stable, but I only use the AB to either reduce incomming damage briefly and to cover long distances to gates in a reasonable time frame.
bottom line, as long as you are careful the bottom one can run any level 4 quite quickly, but not as afk as top one.

Easiest ship in EVE to do lvl4s in. Tanks everything, perma runs the rep and does enough DPS to finish any mission.

Edited by: Fist1 on 18/07/2011 19:46:52 Rattlesnake as mentioned above will be the best passive tank ship for missions. However if you want to try something different try a passive tanked Nighthawk command ship. You will unlock assault frigates, heavy assault ships, and get real close to recons getting to the command ship so its actually a nice path to follow. Some people prefer to drop the EM hardener for an AB. I leave it on and slowboat because I never read the mission details and would not know I was fighting EM rats till i warped into mission lol.

If you have the monies get the Navy scorps for the annoying Gurista missions only. It is the best to boost sensor strength on while still retaining a passable perma tank.
Otherwise go for the afk Drake and it¦s upgrade, the Nighthawk. Much easier to replace than a Navy "anything" when sh!t goes down.
Though you pay for it in training time.

Ok it's not afk but a drake solves most problems. They cost no money and the guristas perma-jam comedy is solved by packing 1000 fof's in your cargohold. You should never lose a ship. Ok I did lose one... a long time ago.

Thanks for all the tips.
i like a lot of these options. i am leaning towards a Rattler though sentry drone 5 is annoying. i guess SNI is a drop-in for current skills.
any reason a cap stable tengu wouldn't work for afks ? is that neuts or webbing frigs ?

Edited by: Dragonslayer Anstian on 19/07/2011 12:35:18 the reason i am leaning towards the rattler is because it opens the doors for gila and the occasional plex runs or incursions. of course, tengu would be awesome if it would work with l4 mission afks.

Webbing frigs and (Blood Raider?) neuts. And occasionally getting hung upon on asteroids or structures if you're orbiting something.

There are 2 reasons I would not want to AFK a tengu all the time.
1 Tengu's don't get drone bays worth a damn. Not without gimping your missile DPS. 2 AFK tengus are prime targets for people looking to buff their kill board with easy kills and loot your faction drop. Most mission tengu fits don't have much more than 30k EHP, and 3 throw away minmatar BS's can do that much damage in 1 shot. Yes they would have to scan you down in your mission and all that but the scan mechanics are stupid easy to use these days.
Now if your gonna only be afk for a few mins at a time then the drawbacks are not that bad on the tengu and could be worth training for. To the people worried about web frigs they are probably using small shield booster fits. if you fork out for a medium deadspace booster then you should be able to tank any lvl 4 mission thrown at you, but that will make you a juicy gank target.

Oddly enough, I think that does work. Anytime I've had a disconnect in a mission, my ship seems to have warped out very quickly. I lose a few of the drones by the time I log back in and get back in the mission, but the ship is intact.
Not sure I would want to test that with a Tengu though.

Unless it's warp scrammed, your ship aligns and warps away from NPCs the second you disconnect. If it is warp scrammed, your ship stays where it is and disappears in the normal timeframe, you do not get the extended 15minute existence in space. A Tengu warps fast .. do you'd be pretty safe.
Your best bet on wife / dog / kid / fire aggro is to simply log out. Unless it's PVP, in which case you need to tell them it is SERIOUS BUSINESS. Also? I just tricked you into reading my signature. |

Rattlesnake and nighthawk are more of what comes to mind first. Passive fits, as you may be on a mission that has neuts, so I be a bit worried about active tank ships. Because lets face it, when they need you it WILL be on those missions and you WILL be scrammed and webbed. If something can go wrong it will go wrong.
At least with a totally passive setup you don't have worry about that. The rattlesnake will probably just be a little bit of additional training to get into, you need galentee BS I to step in and I suggest at least bringing it up to IV. The NH will be a lot more skill intensive, and it's what I fly and I have about maxed everything concerning it and enjoy flying it. But in your situation I would suggest the rattlesnake all the way, if you have to go afk and you have full room aggro and all triggers already just take off and come back with the mission cleared. If you don't have all triggers on you, i personally keep a set of T1 drones for that and just scoop in your nice T2 drones and launch the disposable T1's and let those oens do the work and probably get destroyed, you lose a couple cheap drones but you keep killing while afk. That and the cruise FoF will help out with AFKing alongside the drones, you probably be firing afk for a few minutes with the missiles.
