Last few cycle updates (I run 2 day cycles) I thought something was wrong. Today proved out that cycle submission acts as if it takes, but in what it really does is null out the extraction cycle completely. This has been happening at about a rate of 1 out of 20 submissions.
Morale of the story - don't trust CCP, double check each cycle submission to ensure that it actually made it in to the DB.....

Its a difficult thing to explain, but i think i've been having the same problem for a while too... I've found that despite entering equal ammounts of materials, every now and then it "loses" a cycle or 2 of only one type of material, leading to imbalances... :/

If your link between the extrator and the storage is greater than about 80% you might be losing loads due to link overload.
The load shown on the link when you save your run is the AVERAGE, it can spike and if it spikes over 100% you lose the load from that one cycle.

Using a link at 100% won't necessarily indicate an overload. Look at the routed products for the extractors. Anything not routing will appear there. If the links were overloaded you'd have unrouted product.
I've given up trying to reach any sort of balance. Please tell me why my 2 advanced processors go idle for hours when my 4 basic processors are producing at full capacity? The only thing I can conclude is the basic processors are losing product at the completion of their cycles.

It's not just that the link can overload. When you are setting up extractors, the graph shows you how they will extract. The spikes in the graph can overload things, and the valleys can cause the basic processors to run out of resources for a cycle.
If you want to test the theory, run each process separately for a bit. Break the routes from raw to basic processors until you have a large, equal amount of what you need for the basics. Stop the extractors. Then run the basics with no route for the products to flow to the advanced processors. You should end up with equal piles of materials. Then run the advanced.
Because of the peaks and valleys of the extraction process, timing can screw things up.

There is the problem of the setup allowing you to put in a link smaller that what is actually needed to transport all of the extracted mats.
Also - double check output routing for all factories - I've seen that magically cleared from time to time as well, though fortunately not as often as the false submission bug.

It is not a problem, it is a choice, as you get to choose how much you try to force through the link on the fly when you set up the extractors. Generally, long extraction times will put less of a peak load on a link than short ones. Just hover at the highest peak on the graph to see what kind of load that will be. It will tell you how much will be extracted in that 15-minute cycle.
Also, try not to have any links from your extractors share routes with anything else. That can cause overloads as well.

This isn't a traffic issue, i run planets with no extractors and low traffic, and still get lost cycles.
