Edited by: Lenore Leelu on 20/07/2011 13:13:35 is eve supported on the new macbook airs with intel HD graphics 3000 processor?
(I'll most likely install bootcamp and run eve in windows 7)

Edited by: Equipment Warehouse on 20/07/2011 21:08:32 From experience with the original MBA with the intel GMA950 I'd suggest you be careful
This review suggests it could be OK.
This also suggests it could be alright. You might also want to read what the Starcraft guys think of the intel chip in Mac's.
Also worth a mention that CCP have it listed as a minimum GFx requirement, so kind of implies you should expect much out of it.
Best advice is let someone else be the guinea pig and report back on performance, but if you must and you are serious about playing EVE on it, get the i7 and 4Gb.
Good luck

i7 ordered :) Will bootcamp it and install windows7 and compare framerates under osx lion and windows7
My primary EVE machine is a 27" iMac running windows 7. The Air will be for visiting corpmates and playing EVE at their place instead of them coming to my place all the time.

Well, good luck!
Will be very interested to know how you get on.
My 2.1 MBA with the 9400M and 1.86 core duo gives me about 25 fps on low settings in space, so very playable. CQ is down to about 10, but there you go.

in unrelated news, I've totally munted my Mac Mini Server runing Snow Leopard Server by upgrading it to Lion Server. It wont even display to the Sony Bravia anymore.. reformat and reinstall will be required I think.

It runs pretty well. I'm getting 25-30 fps on 13in MBA (1440x900) with shadow off, HDR off, medium textures. Much more fluid than my 5yr old Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro!

I'll let you know how the i7 goes in both osx lion and in windows 7

the macbook air blows tbh.
it is just a thin but absurdly weak netbook that can only surf the web.
you'd be better off just getting a normal laptop, hell even a normal macbook.

I have a MBA and love it. Contrary to one naive opinion, its a great laptop if portability and Mac OS are important to you and economizing on your dollars isn't. I have the 13" 2.13 C2D MBA from Oct/10 refresh and am happy with it to play Eve, do my general MS Office work and even some iPhoto light duty stuff. My only beef with my unit is that the fan is operating at full speed after 1 minute in Eve. As a backup Eve machine when travelling on business, its great. NOT for a primary Eve machine.

I used to lug around a 17" MacBook Pro. The weight was unfun. I now use a 27" iMac as my primary machine and will use the air for when I'm at work or friends places. Eve doesnt have to run well on it, it just has to run.

You again! I guess you really do have nothing better to do than troll the Mac forum being about as useful as bicycle clips on a fish.

And you don't have anything better to than run after him and comment right after he does.
I guess his "trolling" is working. But I wouldn't call it trolling, he never said anything incorrect.

Edited by: Lenore Leelu on 30/07/2011 15:02:17 On "performance" settings on my i7 13" MacBook Air I'm getting 50 fps in space, and between 15 and 20 fps in station. This is in OSX, using smcfan control to boost the exhaust fan to 100%. I havent found a fan control program for Windows 7 that can see the exhaust fan (macfanx64 said I had -1 fans)(not 1... but minus 1!) so I havent been able to compare FPS in OSX vs Windows 7
OSX is fine though. I'll call that a win, it does exactly what I wanted it to.
If anyone has found a fan program for windows, that can detect the exhaust fan of the macbook air please let me know. (I dont think there is a cpu fan as such, I think there is a wick to a remote heat sink and an exhaust fan on that)

Maybe you should shut your hole and learn to read.

I don't know of any netbooks that contain Core processors. Absurdly weak? Maybe your brain is. Or your learning ability. Or maybe you were talking about your mom perhaps? |

Temperature when running eve according to smcFanControl is 93 degrees. At what temperature will this MacBook Air fry itself?

I don't know what temp will cause the Air to fry, but I noticed that if I play in windowed mode and turn off captain's quarters mine runs in the 76-82 degree range. That's in space and in station. I have been hesitant to try running missions with it.

I check the forums every day for anything I can help with or any solutions to the disconnection problems, so I guess I just seem to be unluck at always following on from Levy. I wouldn't say "he never said anything incorrect" was an accurate statement though. Macs wipe the floor with PCs in several areas...
Plus it gets rather tedious listening to the "Macs suck" trumpet being blown all over the Mac forum so constantly. If we thought PC's were better then we'd own one! If someone's got nothing better to do than keep spouting the same worn out rhetoric all over this forum, then I don't see why we should just put up with it. If he hates Macs that much, then stay thew hell out of this forum instead of being childish.

Is that on the new i5-i7 macbook airs or on the core2duo model? This is mine:
Model Name:MacBook Air Model Identifier:MacBookAir4,2 Processor Name:Intel Core i7 Processor Speed:1.8 GHz Number of Processors:1 Total Number of Cores:2 L2 Cache (per Core):256 KB L3 Cache:4 MB Memory:4 GB Boot ROM Version:MBA41.0077.B00 SMC Version (system):1.73f63
my cpu monitors show 4 rather than 2 cores..(virtual I guess)

Well being pretty mainly.
I petitioned the heat thing by the way, it will be interesting to see the response. Most likely, "not supported"

GM Karidor beleives that the fans are not working at their optimal efficiency. I believe his logic is not working at its optimal efficiency. He warns against dust build up (on a brand new machine). The fan is set to run at max which on my machine is 6496. The temp sits around 93 degrees C. Has anyone else tried EVE with the Graphics Intel HD Graphics 3000?

Lol, this guy just tried to erase almost 30 years now of Mac superior performance under the rug. And the Airbook wins even for a great portable graphics machine for graphic design and photo editing. You know, that RL as a priority thing.
PC is great in the winter time though.

It runs much cooler under Windows 7. using HWMonitor its running at about 45 degrees c instead of the 90 degrees c under OS X and Cider. This result is by running SMCFancontrol under OS X at top speed and then booting into Windows to keep the fan speed up.

Edited by: Carribean Queen on 17/08/2011 08:18:58 I think I figured out the problem.
Well, several realizations actually.
When I put EVE in the background (in windowed mode) on the Intel 3000HD model, the temperature drops from around 95c to 65c... which I found to be odd. But when EVE is front and center and the main app, the temperature climbs RIGHT back up.
When EVE is in the foreground, it uses 100% and then some of the CPU's.
After some old school rooting around, I found a UNIX/LINUX script called LimitCPU (based on CPUlimit) current version is 1.4. If you know your way around the command line and using the terminal properly, this allows you to set the application PID to ONLY use x% of CPU. Well, when I tried it, I let EVE only have 50% and guess what. Performance didn't really change all that much, BUT the temperature? Never went above 65c. So I'm thinking there's an issue in Cider that is making EVE hog the whole frakkin' CPU and thus overheating laptops. But perhaps with a little magic I might be able to fork together an Applescript or a utility that could launch EVE and only let it use x% CPU if anyone is interested. I'll muck about this weekend with it some more.
XOXO
CQ
