With all this 'Eve is Real' stuff going around - I regret not having more footage of my exploits over the years (you know, like the day I stepped up from civilian gatling pulse and spanked a Sanchas minion in under 3 minutes etc etc).
What put me off was the thought of running Fraps or a n other video capture application on my system during PvP. I can't be alone there. The kids are fast to the lock these days so us old folk don't want to put ourselves at a disadvantage.
So why couldn't we do this another way? Rather than have a 3rd party application trying to capture quite a high level of information - would it not be better if we could capture or record the raw data form within eve and then render it post event?
e.g -
* I'm about to get my arse handed to me in combat and I'd like to make a video of it for the family * Rather than tab out to Fraps etc - I click an in game button on the HUD / UI (call this Eve Capture for the sake of giving it a name) * Eve Capture streams the raw data to an event file whilst you play the game the way you usually do * After the event, you could use the same game engine to replay the action - but allowing you to toggle the HUD / UI on and off - select angles / close ups etc and other general editing. * Once you have the edit - throw it in to rendering and out pops your Eve Capture movie.
The output should be in a format that allows further professional editing in other movie packages.
tl;dr - Allow us to dump raw event data to a file - and then process it in to a movie using the same game engine later on.
I now await my public stoning.

YOU SAID YOU EXPLOIT!!!
But yeah, an "event recorder" would imo be a sweet thing to have.

You can bind fraps to a key and just have it open while you're playing. Then, when you think something cool is going to happen, just hit that key.
I'm actually doing this now, starting a little collection of videos of the various things I do in EVE. Fly safe, Die hard |

I put my foot in it there. I'm listening out for the EULA police as we speak.
@Meryl - the benefits of this are that with Fraps you'll get exactly what's on your screen - but Eve Capture (tm) allows you to use the same game engine but strip off the UI and pick your shots/angle after the event. So you play the game - and then turn it in to a movie rather than direct screen capture.

There are many topics on this subject in the Features and Ideas forum, and it has already been passed onto CCP from the 4th / 5th CSM. Its a good idea, even just having x,y,z axis in killmails would be cool.

It would require an ridiculous amount of work for CCP to implement such a thing based on recording of past events, essentially a separate client that would also be forced to be maintained with the main client updates or else be useless. In several cases with other games that would probably happen with EVE, older captures will probably never work with newer clients/playbacks because of changes with data and the way the client functions(i.e. they changed the spatial coordinates and T3s earlier). Backwards compatibility of data/processing is silly to implement so companies like Valve just avoid trying.

I'm not sure I entirely agree. I'm talking about using the existing game engine to replay events based on feed from a pre dumped event file. It will only need maintenance if the underlying form of the metrics getting dumped changes (core engine rewrite perhaps).
Only in game developers can really quantify how often it happens and whether it's practical or not.
Let's face it though - it's a fantasy wish list. It won't happen The Union of the Snake [SNAKE]

True, but from a tech point of view it is entirely possible.
I fondly remember the old Xwing vs. Tie Fighter games, in which they used a separate "Theatre" software piece that gave you all the tools you needed to switch views of the action.
I learned quite a few tactics from reviewing combat footage, and it was visually entertaining as well.
Had I been into making game footage videos at that time, it would have been an invaluable tool.

Theres people who been asking for this for years... obviously CCP doesn't care, and if they did :D it would only because they finally realized that more video footage = more free publicity... :eveisreal:
