Ok, the mission was "The right hand of Zazzmatazz", and I had a shiny new Abbaddon, but I was just unable to clear the spawn without warping out after less than a minute.
My question is, did I just suck, are my skills too crappy, or was it actually a hard-ish mission.
Did I suck - yes I warped in there expecting to turn on my tank (T2 LAR / 4xT2 hardeners) and blow stuff up, with T2 drones to mop up frigs. Which I did, killed Zor, then had to run or die. Was this a stupid approach, and should I have been burning to keep at range and picking everything off as quickly as I could?
Are my skills too crappy - I have T2 everything except guns, pretty good gunnery supprt skills, and ok (entry level t2) drone skills. Should I wait for T2 guns, or am I just expecting too much and should be playing better?
Or was it a hard-ish misison and i should keep trying.

IIRC that mission is rather hard to tank for newer players because of the mixed damage types. Ideally though you should get t2 guns asap, missions like that are much easier if you use scorch. |

Its a tricky ish mission, the dps is rather harsh but mercs have no tank so die very fast.
Now what hardeners did you use?

I'm reminded of an old WoW joke ventrillo recording where some guild leader goes on and on about managing aggro probably, liberally using "If you get too much aggro, and die, you're an idiot!".
Thing is, you shot Zor, which triggers bijillion BSes spawn when he gets shot. What you need to do is manage aggro, which can be done using wonderful resources like EVE-Survival. That way, you can avoid doing that again.
But, if not, remember that missions respawn every 24 hours, so you can always come back and fix your dumb mistakes. |

If you're using beams, try warping in @30km. (Warp in, quickly cancel) If you're using pulses, the only thing that i can tell u is: "that cruisers are tough".

Yeah that mission is pretty harsh in terms of DPS coming in.
OP, you are most likely going ok with it.

It's one of those "watch what you shoot" missions.

As others have said that is a ***** of a mission to try as your first L4. Also make sure to read up on the mission and know the triggers.

well, I don't feel quite so bad now.
I was running 2 t2 Therm, and 2 t2 kinetic, I think, hardeners basically the two highest from the battleclinic wiki, since even the Google cache page wouldn't load for eve-survival. I guess maybe I should have gone 2 thermal and 2 omni maybe.
I guess I just played it badly too, I should have tried to keep my distancee better and made more effort to clear the cruisers.
at least in some respects I know it was a hard one which gives me a bit more confidence for my next mission.

Just finished my second ever lvl4 in my bright shiny new Maelstrom with a fit found on Battleclinic. The first mission I drew was The Damsel in Distress. The mission link warped me in dead center of all the baddies. The fit I'm using is Arty with no speed mod, so everything is faster than me and under my guns. Tank started going down fast, so I warped out. Collected my thoughts & warped back in. Immediately made a bookmark & got out before my tank died. Warped to 100KM of my bookmark and started picking them off as they came to me. Tank was not an issue until they caught up to me. Warp out & back in @ 0 now that everything is 100 KM out. Pick them off as they come to me again. Repeat until they can't break my tank. Lesson learned, maybe need to revisit fit and trade some shield tank for speed tank. More speed would have helped for mission number two. Still up in the air over AC vs. Arty.

AFAIK, the warp>>cancel warp>>warp in at range trick still works. That mission is best sniped, once everything is dead warp back in and pop the structure. --

Use both, AC for short range missions like damsel and angels, then switch to arties for the longer range one such as some blockades.
and no i dont mean use both at the same time in case someone goes "wtf you noob" :P Keep both loadouts handy and switch depending on what works best for that mission.

In fact, for that mission you can just right click and do the "warp in to location within **km" from the first place. No bookmarks needed |

As a vet care bear i developed one golden rule that i always stick to.
"Never shoot if it is not shooting You"
Advice for You is to learn triggers, keep the drones away from them and get a brief info on enemies that You will face.
From what You wrote seems like You went for enemies that fire at Your highest resist and let the other kill you slowly but effectively. In this mission always go for cruisers first because they deal 3/4 of the damage when get closer to You.
Next time try Overlord->Bodyguards->Assassins->rest. Drones on frigs and I'm sure You will do great.

I'd say, if you can't use Scorch L, you should be flying an Apocalypse, kill ships before they get to you.

Superb advice. The apoc is a little more skill intensive (cap life, d'oh!) but it's range bonus makes the lack of T2 pulses more of a non-issue. You'll do some pretty nice DPS at a decent range.
To be honest, you're almost best off declining any mission which isn't against blood raiders / sansha in an Amarr battleship (you're using it in Amarr space, yeah?). You'll tank EM/Therm like a champ, and of course, you'll spew it in barrels full from your lasers.
Get level 4 standings with several agents (now so ****ing easy with the agent changes it's a joke) and just move between them if you need to decline more than a couple within 4 hours. The new agent finder should make finding them a trivial task, too.
Basically, things look pretty good for you if you stay the course :) -------
