So I tried grouping my weapons and it was very convenient for a while since I didn't have to press f1-f7, but soon I started noticing that it seemed like I was taking longer to kill stuff. And that's when I noticed that I don't ever get any perfect or wrecking shots when my guns are grouped (talking about ACs here). I've watched the combat log over two days of doing missions and not a single perfect or wrecking shot. The most I'd get was excellent and well aimed hits.
Granted, I also rarely had my groups of guns miss the target completely, compared to non-grouped gun that used to miss quite often when fired individually.
So does anyone know definitely if it's better for over-all DPS to group up your guns or no? Does the lack of perfect and wrecking hits reduce the DPS or does the fact that you miss a lot less often with grouped weapons makes up for that fact?
How do grouped weapons even calculate damage, anyway? Do they pre-calculate it as if they were firing individually and then give you the combined average or something?
Thanks for any advice!

What is effectively happening, is the game calculates the hits for each gun, totals it, and then you get that as your grouped damage - with less commentary, I might add.
For instance, a group of 8 guns 'lightly striking' a ship may mean 2 hit and 6 misses. A group that scores "well hit" might have got a wrecking shot or two in.
Your actual dps (total damage of all guns per second) remains the same, ungrouped or grouped. You can test this by shooting a large collidable structure, averaging the figures out a bit, and a bit of addition. Also? I just tricked you into reading my signature. |

Grouped = easier to manage (esp. sinc ehtye added heat) and reduced server load which = less lag.

You can really lower your dps by grouping the guns, this is called "overkill", when you shoot with multiple guns on a target which would have exploded with half of the guns on him. This is especially inconvenient if you are using tachyons or artillery, make sure that every shot counts. For example, I use 2 groups of 800's on my Vargur because they have a cycle time of under 4 seconds, it doesnt matter a lot if 2 guns instead of one cycle. If I do this in the Paladin however, the tachyons have a way longer cycle time and I would lose DPS if I shoot on a frig with 2 tachs instead of one- I could have killed 2 frigs, each with one tachyon gun.

Thanks, that's what I wanted to confirm.
