Since the last major patch a bug was introduced where the CTRL and ALT key strokes are being processed on the down stroke, not on the up stroke.
This is a coding 101 bug. The reason is that if you fire events on the KEYDOWN event on a CTRL key that means that pressing any combination will accidentally trigger both the CRTL and the CTRL + <key> combination.
This is evident in the game: Target something in space and press ALT+Tab, you will switch windows, but you will Look at the item first. If you run more than one copy of EvE this is very annoying.
Pressing CTRL+S to enable autopilot also targets whatever you have focus on, stargate, CONCORD , etc.
This is all because the coder used the KEYDOWN and not the KEYUP event which is a standard. You can see he was aware it was sketchy because he tried to fix it by putting in a slight delay.
Wrong.
Think about the incoming key events (yes, I'm a 22 year veteran software engineer) 1. KEYDOWN: CTRL 2. KEYDOWN: S 3. KEYUP: S (or CTRL, doesn't really matter) 4. KEYUP: CTRL (or S, doesn't really matter)
If you make the mistake of using the KEYDOWN event then when #1 fires you check your table and start Targeting; then when #2 fires you see CTRL is in down state and this is the S event to you start autopilot.
If however you ignore KEYDOWN and only read KEYUPs it works like a it was designed that way, which is was:
Easy Street: #3 fires, since one key is "on the way up" and the other is still down a valid assumption is both were down, fire CTRL+S: Autopilot. Win
Fix it, it is very annoying and it makes it look like you are using interns to code the game.

This is more annoying than the sticky keys a few builds back. I end up untargeting both the focused target and the one I click sometimes, despite wanting to keep shooting the focused target.
I expected this to be fixed in the recent patch at the latest, but apparently it's a crazy complicated bug working as intended.

Simple and annoying keypress / keyrelease problem.
Either fix the keyup / keydown problem or implement more shortcuts so we can seperate target / lookat and hold target / lookat keys. Then I can have a key I hold to target / lookat which doesn't activate the command before I've even clicked anything.

Can't remap "alt+tab".
If you play multiple clients it is fun, when you switch, you look at whatever you are targeting.
I can usually tell my miner from my hauler when switching because the miner is staring at a rock and the hauler is staring at a can

I was mucking about with this and noticed that it wasn't the handling of CTRL itself that was the problem, so much as the system refusing to recognize modified mouse buttons as hot keys.
The hot key for targeting should be CTRL-BUTTON1.

+1 to what OP said and give more options for us - for example ability to disable entire "select from overview and click a key to activate"-feature.
There has been like 4-5 patches and updates to shortcut system and it is still way below acceptable standard. --- This is one of the moments where we look at what CCP does and less of what they say. Innovation takes time to set in and the predictable reaction is always to resist change |

Edited by: Jozelina on 30/07/2011 11:13:34 I can't understand jargon about up strokes, downstrokes, codings and all that but.......... What I'm finding is instead of ctrl/select to target it is now select/ctrl which has caused me to accidentally open fire on my fleet members after I had given the command to follow them. I would be very unpopular if the rest of my fleet were not my alter egos. Is that what this post is about? For multiple clients I needed to dissable some of the shortcut keys, like the "look at" key, friggin anoying it was.
