I never got why "reply to topic" and "new topic" is so confusing. What part of "new topic" is difficult to understand? -

Quite simple really. Remove the 'New Topic' button when a user is in a thread. 'New Topic' should only be visible when perusing the forum, not an individual thread.
Poor forum design - judging by the number of people who seem to be doing this.
