Hey I'm a new play, I started with a Gallente pilot and I've accumulated just over 1.1 million SP but as I've learnt more about the game I found out that Gallente use drones to do a lot of their DPS. So I've decided I'd like to fly Amarr ships but I'm not sure if I'll be at a disadvantage being Gallente using Amarr ships.
So my question is; Would I be better off deleting my character and remaking it as an Amarr or learning the skills to fly Amarr ships?
Thank

Ahh okay, so Amarr don't get any special racial benefits that would give them an edge in piloting Amarr ships over a Gallente using an Amarr ship?
Thanks for the quick reply =]

No, only skills matter in this game.

Seconding this.
The only thing choosing Amarr does is change your appearance and give you access to some *****in' hoods. ANY race can train to be as competent in any ship as any other race. IIRC, selecting your starting race only determines which skills you start out with. ----------

Edited by: Akisa Damaar on 25/07/2011 00:45:11 Just a warning though:
Amarr ships are second only to Gallente in drone use, so you might be a bit disappointed to find drones yet again. Their main weapons are lasers of course, but they have pretty large drone-bays for non-Gallente boats and usually larger than Caldari and Minmatar ships.

I was under the impression that Amarr had only 2 droneboats. I would put Minnies in second place for using drones right behind Gallente. But that's only me .

Amarr & Gallente both mostly armor tank.
They've also both got some good drone boats.
Everyone past a certain point (Battleships & Battle Cruisers) tends to use drones but some ships have more of them than others.

As a true Gallente pilot, i can tell you... make sure to burn your clothes after exiting any amarr ships.
If i ever smell Amarr inscense in one of my beloved gallente ships i'll hunt you down and pod you myself.

I'm a Gallente/Amarr pilot the synergy skill training wise is so very similar that your at no disadvantage if you train for both.
Its true that Gallente and Amarr use drones (Gallente more so) but I'm still more gunnery based and have no problems, infact once you get into the bigger Gallente gun boats like the Mega, that drone bay starts looking very tasty indeed for knocking out smaller targets.
As for the training
Gunnery - Goes without saying, all the skills cross over, execpt for the racial turret skills Armour - Hull Upgrades 5, Mech 5 and Repair Systems 4. Tanking is then solid for both Amarr and Gallente. Engineering - Engineering 5 helps a lot, our guns are both Power heavy, and Cap heavy. Energy Systems Operation, Energy Management are essential, as is Enegry Grid Upgrades to 3/4 for the cap mods. Drones - You can just get T2 Scout drones and leave it at that if you wish, they WILL save you some day, this is the same for every single race. I can't stress enough how useful they are the bigger your ship gets.
Everything else is common sense, Navigation makes you go faster, Electronics for targeting etc, I just wanted to highlight the important cross overs between the two.
Good luck :D

Sooner or later just about everyone in this game cross trains their character into at least one other race. There is no disadvantage other than you may have to begin training certain skills from level 1 that are necessary to that new race ships.

To be very specific - the only advantage you get from being Amarr and flying Amarr ships - is that you start off with Amarr Frigate II. The cost of that skill for someone else is trivial and only takes a few minutes to train to level II.
This is the same for every character. They all start out with Faction Frigate II but can easily train to fly another factions ships to that level in a very short amount of time.
For my Minmatar Characters - I've often trained Caldari Frigates - so that I could use the Bantam instead of the Burst (which is terrible) and the Osprey instead of the Scythe (which isn't that bad).

I think the main thing for characters that are a little older SP-wise is the training in turrets. Amarr boats tend to give you bonuses in Lazer turrets and Gallente are all Hybrid based turret bonuses. So for me to train laser turrets to the same level I have in hybid turrets would take me 30 days. So I have to ask myself. Switch to amarr ship and spect the 30 days on turrets or keep flying Gallente?
Of course if you decide the 5% or 50% turret bonus isn't that significant then the whole point is moot. |
