Assume a high-sec mining op with 10-15 participants. 1 Orca giving bonus, and 1 other Orca or 2-3 industrials hauling. Everyone else in Hulks (except the noobs who are in lesser mining boats; I run noob-friendly ops).
We're in Guristas space, so the threat of being ECM jammed is great. This means the Hulks and the static bonus Orca have their light drones out for automated defence, and for helping each other (since if the Guristas rats jam one Hulk, the others can send their drones to gank the rats).
My thought is, would it be better to have one participant in a largely ECM-proof combat ship, and have him gank the rats ASAP when they appear, so that the Hulks (and the static Orca) can use their mining drones?
My most recent op had 4 participants, but was unusual in that I sent out invites very late (shame on me...). The one before that had 14 participants or so, and the next op I arrange might have 15 or even more (I've asked some of my informal and formal lieutnants to train a little leadership, so I can give the Orca bonus to a larger fleet if necessary).
Eventually these ops might move into low-sec, or into wormholes. So I'm thinking, even if there's a loss of profit short-term, I'm training the combat pilot to be on guard, and so he can probably be taught to use d-scan or whatever the correct counter-measure is for unfriedly visitors in wormholes/lowsec.
The combat pilot probably won't be one of the members of my (tiny) corp, so I'm basically training another guy (although whoever it ends up being, he might end up asking to join my corp, in the long term; my ops are subtly a recruitment effort) in terms of player skillz.
I also suspect such ops will quickly need to do 2 belts at a time, like "let's start with belt 3 and 4, then once they're done we take belt 5 and 6", to avoid too much "crossing of the photon streams", which means having 2 or even 3 such guards necessary. Eating into profit (it's one Hulk less - or at least one Osprey or Covetor less), but maybe being good for the long term.
Those are my thoughts. What are yours?

Assuming know one has wardecc'd you, I don't think you should spend any pilots on a resident defender. Assign your haulers to fleet defense duty, exchanging their haulers for gunship whenever npcs appear.
Low sec is different. Very different. Your best defense there is anonymity. Barring that you'll need a true, dedicated defensive component able to scare off small to medium gangs. Unless your fleet members are corps mates and you can trust them I advise against this course of action as well, since they coudl easily spy on you and make a small fortune giving your fleet's position away to pirates.
In wormhole space, forget it. You'll need a real corp to even consider this direction for any length of time/stretch of luck.
In many ways if you want to progress beyond high sec mining, joining null sec alliances may be profitable. Null is often safer for the observant mining fleet, containing grav sites for plunder and profit too.

That's fine, but when you go in the region of 15+ ships all hovering within 2.5km of each other, I'd worry more about griefers who drop smartbombing battleships on your mining op, so maybe have a shield transport on standby as well. |

tbh, guard ships to feck all to protect you, but feel free to bring them along
if you cant protect yourself against hisc rats in a belt with drones then something is terribly wrong |

If your drones really can't handle it, either a Vexor for the drones, or an arty Thrasher. I recently took the latter around a few high-sec belts to test the fit, and found that the optimal range covered most of the belt from the warp-in point. You can hop between belts quickly, and seven turret slots of artillery makes rats go splodey in one volley. |

The drones of a single Orca can handle the NPC in the belt. No mining ship should need to bother with them.

What he said. with the hulks plus orcas you should have a ton of combat drones when something pops up. if anything just have everyone make sure they can run some t2 hobs or hammers. 10 of those alone will handle rats faster then they can even get to a hulk. |

Training one pilot for pvp to protect a small fleet sounds like a recipe for inflating someone elses kill mails. Might be good for getting the occasional can flipper in high sec(pro tip; Keep that toon in another corp if this is what you are planning on doing. Also Bookmark where your mining team is at and keep this player parked and aligned at the nearest planet. Its faster than using a cloak imo.)
Also another note, I would avoid low sec and go strait for wormholes. Wormholes tend to be safer in a weird way even though they are considered nil sec, because 1st you donĘt show up in local, and 2nd because you actually have to scan down the grav sites in order to wreck your party. Bad guys actually have to put in some effort to find you which will turn off a lot of people. But beware of locals that dont want anyone moving into their wormhole.

All you need in highsec to take care of the belt-rats is 1 (yes one) light combat drone.

The Hulk (and the Covetor of course) does have sufficient space for two flights of drones... If you have 10 Hulks on the operation then you can drop 50 light drones on any rat that spawns - which is likely to be enough to kill it before it gets a shot off if your Hulks are fitting SeBos... It's certainly enough to kill it before it can do significant damage. Then simply recall the lights, drop the mining drones and carry on... If you load your Orca with lights rather than mediums then you have space for a flight of light shield and light armour bots too which means that even a day old player in a Rookie ship can be kept safe... Alternatively you can simply use your third highslot for a shield xfer and run as a mini-Rorq. --
