Though Star Wars will be more WoW-Like it will be still a sci-fi MMORPG with some space combat included. Are you planning to play it?

Star wars TOR will have: hardly any crafting player content; limited exploration with a really stupid trying-to-cover-up-what-is-really-just-instancing system; wow-clone combat mechanics and cartoon-ish player graphics and on top of all this has absolutely no MMO innovation what-so-ever.
I'd love to play this game but the more I read the more I fear the fail.

TOR will impact both EVE and WOW at release. and then as people rapidly consume content and EA fails as usual to keep up with publishing more content people will come back to EVE and/or WoW and go back to their normal MMO habits.
Every new MMO gets called (current mmo name here) Killer. and yet it seems the new ones have a poor track record of killing the existing ones or even impacting them.

I am exceedingly hopeful that TOR will replace Warcraft for me in the genre they both compete in.
As for EVE, why would I replace an apple with an orange?

honestly it kinda just looks like star wars galaxy. If it acts and plays like some combination of star wars galaxy and guild wars. (it looks more like guild wars than wow to me) If its just a clone of those two it should have that same bell curve of subscriptions, increasing for 4 months then a decline over then next 2 years. In that time they will go through micro transactions and possibly a free to play model. -------------

SWTOR might have an impact. I recall when a lot of SW NGE refugees arrived here in EVE a few years back now and at least some of them will be tempted back by the IP if nothing else.
EVE has been increasingly moving towards the 'middle ground' of MMOs by attempting to appeal to a broader audience rather than being radically different. If EVE has moved too much to differentiate itself from SWTOR then players will jump to which ever IP/Universe they prefer - most likely SW. If it's sandbox charms are sufficient however they may stay.

If I recall, the space combat is on rails, a la Rebel Assault II. No thanks

If you call the rubbish they have added "space combat" LOL. Have you seen it? It's space ships on rails, you man the gun while the ship flies itself and you shoot at stuff, not exactly an EVE killer IMO.

It looks and plays absolutely nothing like Starwars Galaxies thank you very much.
Starwars galaxies is a sandbox MMO set in the galctic empire era of SW (the most famous era which is well documented), with "realistic" character models (they used motion capture for character models), an advanced crafting model, freeform housing and decorating, a flight sim style space component, open world pvp and content that has been geared toward solo and groups, the quests do not lead you around by the nose either.
SW:TOR will not be sandbox and will be set in an era thousands of years before the republic even existed (a timeline no-one has ever seen or heard of until recently), have "cartoon like" character models, the barest minimum of crafting (from what i understand it's somethign like collect this and this and give it to an npc to get your item), no housing or decorating, spaceships on rails, arena style pvp and content that is geared toward solo only (you get companions that pretty much means you don't have to interact with anyone else), the quests are a long storyline that you have to follow to advance.
Absolutely no comparison. Not similar at all.

I doubt its gonna replace much honestly.
To replace EVE, it'd have to be anything remotely like EVE - and besides being a SciFi themed game that doesn't seem to be the case at all.
To replace WoW, its gonna have to be good enough to attract not just single players but entire guilds/communities, and no game managed to o that before on a significant scale.

This.
To be honest if SOE had actually put some effort into fixing SWG and releasing an expansion it very liekly wouldn't even replace swg.

I've never played WoW, so SWTOR will be a new gaming experience for me.
It will not replace EVE though.

Affect EVE significantly? Definately not. Will it have a noticable effect? I don't belive it will. Will I play it? Yes. Do I believe it will be a good/successful game? No. -

Edited by: URDEAD2ME on 27/07/2011 16:13:51 i wa sin the beta for the swtor and tbh i found it boring as hell the grind to lvl up is so boring you get most your powers by lvl 15 after that its a grind and each level you get a upgrade by say 1 or 2% for the power you already got and tbh the leveling is slow even when you do it in a good group . i found all the classes to be very boring jedi sounds awesome but was boring as hell. the bounty hunter is bad so is the smuggler the trooper only one that was fun and that got boring after the second day of the beta .
try it by all means but i know i wont be playing it when it comes out true it was abeta but the game was all but finished so they said.
oh and the 3rd person in space flight pvp and pve part of the game is ok but rather clunky and well the objectives are not all that clear.
as much as people ***** about eve after playing swtor and then coming back to eve i fell in love with eve all over again . |

Don't even begin to compare a theme park non sandbox game with the niche spreadsheet madness that is eve.
As for losing subs. Yeah the herd will flock to theme park crap, but the niche will remain.
Not planning to play it since I've heard that the pvp is a joke.

Active population probably dips a little every time a much-hyped MMO comes out, but that doesn't mean a lot of unsubs. I, like many, plan to just it a try and then decide.
It doesn't sound like it fills the same niche though.

Doubtful I will even play it. tbh, MMO's as a genre don't interest me all that much. I like Eve specifically because of the idea behind the sandbox.
If they kill off the sandbox, I'll stop playing Eve.

Somewhat less than if there had been no SWG and SOE released SWG now.
Another sandbox, with multiple skill trees and specialisations as well as player controlled cities, lots of non-combat classes and content. Politics, non-consensual open-world PVP, war decs and a bounty system that worked. Elite classes and a death system that actually had meaning.
That might have an affect on Eve.
Wow clone #1358 with a simple re-skin and a couple more storyline moments. Based on a universe already marred by the destruction of its predecessor.
I don't think we have much to worry about. That anyone thinks this game will be better than SWG:EMU is beyond me.

I doubt Old Republic will take too much of a bite out of EVE. The two games are just too dissimilar. However some who like Star Wars or sci-fi in general will migrate. Mostly those people who aren't solely committed to the sandbox.
Personally, I have already pre-ordered it. I'll try to get my money's worth out of the cost of the box. Whether or not I pay for another month beyond the free one will depend on how much I like the game.
It's going to be a busy end of the year for new titles, carrying over into the beginning of 2012. Old Republic, Rage, Skyrim, F1-2011, Mass Effect 3, Guild Wars 2, Dead Island, Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3 just to name a few. ___

I came to EVE in 2005 after the NGE fiasco in SWG. I really liked SWG, but I don't see any of that in SWTOR. Regardless, EVE is deeper and more complex than either of those games so I'll be staying right here. Dispite my distaste for the all things Incarna, I am hoping it will bring in the people who enjoy the social aspect of MMO's and thus bring more money to CCP. My corp lives in wormholes so rarely am I affected by Incarna; but it would be nice to get more dev time on FiS EVE. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [GNSTR] |
